If you answered yes, please explain how.Throughout my entire childhood, being gay was always a joke to my bullies. I went to a catholic school where our priest gave lectures on how being gay was a sin and all the while, I was looking across class at all the boys I started to have feelings for. I was severely bullied throughout my whole childhood and my school didn't care that the word gay was being used as an insult. Although I didn't come out until much later, I know this is much of the reason why I stayed in the closet so long. Then in high school, we had one boy who was out and he was pretty badly bullied and had to sit alone everyday at lunch so I sort of knew the effect it would take on me if I came out.

If you answered yes, please explain how.One of my jobs is being the owner of my own company so I don't really get harrassed there from my employer - myself. But years ago I used to work for a local lighting and sound company as their general manager and everyday, I would go into work and my boss (there were only three of us in the whole company) would make fun of another business owner who is gay and threatened both myself and the one employee under my leadership that if we ever came out as gay that we could find a new job somewhere "more queer". Shortly after, I left that company and concentrated on my own business and then took a job at a local news station as a specialized camera operator. There was one of my coworkers at the news station who was my good friend for a number of years at the station and then suddenly one day he decided to hop into a production truck with me and call out to everyone that he was "riding with the faggot again". When I asked him to retract his comment and asked him if he was joking, he continued to state that I'm just a fagoot to him and that's all I will ever be. Luckily, this news station not only has multiple gay and bisexual employees, who along with every other person at the station who are strong allies of the LGBTQ community, supported me and helped me greatly get over losing this friendship, but the news station also has policies against this discrimination and after a formal investigation, he was left go from the company the next morning. I must say that I even have a best friend at work who I thought was deeply religious and will be dead-set against my life once I came out but even he is still my best friend and wants to be in the front row of my wedding. So, while most of my employers have stood up for diversity, some have not but even those who do have anti-discrimination policies, that doesn't mean I'm safe anywhere. I even sometimes think about my company where there is no one at work to make fun of me or fire me but I rely solely on hundreds of customers who can make decisions on which company they choose based on their beliefs. Most times when I find a new client, I'll wait until they sign the contract and the check clears before accidentally


mentioning how I might have a boyfriend at the time or wear rainbows or a million things I have to be self-conscious of in everyday environments. It gets tiring having to hide it after a while. Honestly, it's a giant relief if a new client of mine mentions to me that they are gay or they have team members who are or maybe even mentions that they support the charities we support which tells me they did their research and support my community. It's just this weight lifted off my shoulders that I no longer have to watch my words until the check clears. I know it sounds stupid to some but there's still this fear that my customers won't look at the quality of my work or my industry-standard pricing and instead just see me for my rainbows. And I have this fear with good reason. One of my former customers messaged me one day and told me how I was living in sin and told me all about how being gay was a choice and a disease - just like alcoholism, and can be treated and cured. Now, luckily he still sends customers my way but it's just the thought of never knowing what email I'm going to wake up to everyday.

I was bullied for a multitude of reasons, including but not limited to, my height, weight, shape, personality, likes and dislikes, clothing, accessories, sexual activities (I was a virgin but got labeled as a whore after I was sexually assaulted, and molested by a fellow classmate at the age of 7 or 8. He went into school and told the entire class that we had fooled around, I had no idea. This has really scarred me.)


If you answered yes, please explain how.I was terminated from my job at Ruths Chris Steakhouse in downtown Pittsburgh for kissing a coworker outside of work. I was too young, and did not know that this was illegal. I was so embarrassed I did not tell anyone the reason behind my termination. My manager asked me directly if we had kissed at the bar, and when I responded honestly, I was told that I was, 'not the direction they wanted to go in'. Looking back on it, I am so very angry that not only this occured, but, that I allowed it to occur, and I didn't speak up, and question what had happened.

Days before that I was given a Saturday detention because I mumbled a rude comment about someone to my friend. Yes, these are all grounds for disrespect, and that is a valid reason for punishment. But earlier in the year, my ex-boyfriend and I got into a physical altercation. He pushed me 3 times, there was no way I could walk away so I had to punch him in his testicular area. He then proceeded to punch my thigh as hard as he could. I had a giant bruise for 2 weeks. The staff member did not punish either of us. That relationship was extremely abusive, and this type of behavior was normal for him. But sending him off with a slap on the wrist shows him that it is okay to hit a girl.

Representative told me to go to air machine at a convenience store to fill it (no manual in car so no idea how much to put in or if there was another issue with tire). I mentioned this to her and she said a real man would know how to put air in tire. Manager was of no assistance. Filed complaint with corporate and made complaint with Human Relations. Manager was also the owner of that franchise location agreed to make donation equal to rental contract price to a lgbt organization which I chose.

If you answered yes, please explain how.When I lived in Mann's Choice, Pa I was assaulted, I had bottles thrown at me, called foul names. I moved to Hyndman, Pa in the late 90s. We have a post office that we must pick up our mail from. My sister went to pick up the mail a week after we moved in. The state of Pa had sent my drivers license renewal in both my old name and my legal name. The post office people asked who this other person was my sister answered it's my sister Kathys old name. Several people with trucks gathered in front of my apt later that day and one stepped


forward threatening to kill me. I called the mayor who said things were fine until I arrived. Called the state police who came to my apt and told me to move. The town thugs destroyed my 1991 Chevy Lumina. They shot out the tail lights, slashed two sets of tires, then hit the hood so hard with something it broke a part on the engine.I ended up selling it for junk. I have been disabled since the late 80s and on a fixed income. I have been shot at several times, had firearms pointed at me as I walked down the street near my home at Harcelode Apts in Hyndman. I have had people threaten me to my face. Fireworks thrown on my porch late in the evenings. Rifles pointed at me as I sat on my porch in the early morning and late evening. When I heard a man shouting back in 2008 Adam and Eve not Adam and Steve at my late evangelical neighbor I shuddered. I cannot afford to move or I would have decades ago. After the mayor got involved because these thugs were destroying others property, one even bragged at the HS about his deeds, no arrest were ever made. MD state police helicopter flew over the town for several nights while there was a PSP presence. The vandalism stopped briefly. 14 years they terrorized me and then stopped. I believe this has something to do with them leaving HS and going to college. Still I am left looking over my shoulder every time I step outside. I avoid the people of Hyndman. My neighbor gets my mail and scripts. I pass and have passed for over 25 years. I finished my therapy in Pittsburgh in the late 90s and received my first referral letter. Sadly I became ill and did not proceed further. Today I have CKD3, A-Fib, a controlled seizure disorder no seizures in decade's. COPD, Emphysema and lost part of my right lung in 2009. Was treated horribly in a Maryland Hospital. I do not announce being Transsexual to people and the term is only used in a clinical setting. With the current presidents fear mongering and hate I fear the bigots in Hyndman may be emboldened to harm me, if they remember who I am.

If you answered yes, please explain how.I'd never come out on my own doing. I was outed in the summer between my eighth and ninth grade year, by a girl I was friends with. I found out when I stopped associating with her and befriended someone else she happened to have told. School came around again, and the word got out to the rest of my class, with one of the first people being told asking me if it was true, because the rumor started to spread rapidly by the end of that week. After that moment, through to graduation, less and less people wanted to associate with me, or simply engage with me socially in the classroom. My friend circle almost entirely changed each year. Most of my friends were supportive of me after I'd personally come out (only to those whom I felt needed to know), but "casual" homophobia was still a common denominator among all my classmates and friends. Telling me to act less feminine, less "gay", jokes at the expense of the fact that I am gay, which I never took kindly to and was expressive of the fact. Lots of mentioning that I'm gay, while also telling me to not make it the only aspect of my personality. It seemed as though no one cared about my orientation – which was all I wanted, for it to be no big deal – and yet, it seemed to hinder my ability to make friends with some of those same people. I may not have been treated violently or targeted explicitly for being gay, but many people who painted themselves in an open-minded light acted and said otherwise when they were unaware there was an LGBTQ person in the same room as them.

My boss and a number of my coworkers were LGBTQ, and no one seemed to mind until these people became the pit of a few distasteful jokes. This was never much of a problem, seeing as the people involved in the jokes took no offense, and in fact would be in on the joke themselves, thus making it purely for fun.





If you answered yes, please explain how.I went to my doctor in high school for an emergency appointment regarding symptoms of depression. I'd never come out to my doctor before this and so he asked if I was gay, and whether it was a contributing factor to my depression. My doctor was a rather outspoken conservative republican. He, too, hid behind the guise that my orientation did not disturb him, reasoning with some story of native tribes having men sleep together with men, and women with women so as to prevent overpopulation. Whether or not this was true at all, I shrugged it off, until the end of the appointment when he suggested I simply "pray" at night as part of my general health care and preservation. I could tell this was less about my depression and more a tongue-in-cheek shunning of my gayness. Thankfully, I was still referred to a counselor and eventually given antidepressants I felt I needed.

Those who couldn't pass were tormented constantly- males much worse than females. It wasn't just social ostracism and verbal abuse, I witnessed physical assaults. It felt miserable to lie all the time to everyone, and so isolating to hide all my emotions and not be allowed to experience everything my peers did as a normal part of their development. Under the guise of friendship and as part of my work duties, she pressured me to accompany her to her church functions. I was unaware of how devious she was at first, but once I knew, I tried to ignore it, set boundaries, and do my job well. When none of her many plans "cured" me of my sinful ways, she fired me, privately telling me it was because I refused her help and was damned to hell, but publicly making it about job performance. I had to hide my sexuality completely so I wouldn't be homeless. I couldn't have friends who were openly gay visit me. I couldn't bring any guys I was dating home to my place. It was like living behind enemy lines. It was very stressful, but I knew there was no legal protection and I could be evicted. When I finally met my partner I had to introduce him to the super as a family member until we could find our own place.

Forced into lying for our personal safety, the security of our home, and the safety of our children is grueling. My partner was also fired from his job for being gay. He worked for a major national company that actually had a non-discrimination policy. He is a military veteran and a normally private person, but at a diversity training, the local trainer spoke about women, and various people of color, but said he was skipping the LGBT part, because "we don't have anyone like that here" in a very disdainful tone. My partner spoke up and outed himself and the daily harassment began. He was discriminated against in promotion, job assignments, ostracized socially, his locker and personal property vandalized with derogatory words, and his work life was made miserable. He was the same person he was before in his conduct, but it changed how people viewed him and made him a target. The main corporate offices sent more trainers and tried to address it, but it just made people more cautious about getting caught. Finally one homophobic boss was able to fire him and claim it was for some other re ason. We have never recovered economically- he has been unable to find work that is at the pay scale of his former job. We are tied to the area through family, so moving would be a hardship. We have kept our home, but we will both have to work well beyond retirement age. It is difficult not to become bitter when still, after all the gains gay people have made, the discomfort of others directly effects your lIfe with negative outcomes. I was hopeful that we were headed for equality, but in recent years, there is a backlash and it seems like even the small victories will be taken away.

He made zero indication that he knew or cared about my gender. I was never charged for that visit. And I will never go back to saint lukes, or any medical facility in this county. I travel two hours to go to Philadelphia for ALL of my medical needs now.

However, when I contacted the local district justice office where we resided, I was told that the judge (Ann Young) did not perform any marriage ceremonies at all. Personally, I felt that was a cop out to not have to perform same sex marriages. I was under the impression that officiating marriage ceremonies was one of the required duties carried out by the district court judges. We found a judge (Andrea Book - Jefferson Township) in a neighboring municipality that was more than happy to officiate our marriage.
