They can write 2/3 sentences about a member of the gardaí. For example:

She is a garda. She is brave and smart She is strong and helpful. The garda helps people who are in danger. They use a radio and handcuffs. They drive a garda car.

Remind children to write on the line and have a space between their words.

Page 6: stconlethsns.weebly.com€¦  · Web viewThis theme links with last week as we continue to look at the Emergency Services. I am suggesting the online book “The Emergency Services”

Tall letters are tall are touch the top line like t, l, h ,k f. Small letters are sitting on the line like a, c, e, u, i. Letters with tails go under the line like g, j, y.

Capitals at the start of a sentence Full stop at the end of the sentence.

This is all about encouragement to write and don’t worry if there’s spelling errors. This activity is to enjoy writing and boost confidence. Get the child to read the word or sentence back to you. Praise tall letters touching the top line, capitals at the start or spaces between the words.

Dictation – encourage the children to sound all the words out themselves, remind them to stretch the words out to help them. Please do not spell the words for the children, let them try by themselves. Correct together. oa ow

Repetition of money content from last week. Extension work 5cMoney- In Senior Infants, we focus on 1c, 2c, 5c, 10c. Adding up to the value of 10c. Use real money if you have it. If you don’t have 1c/ 2c/ 5c/10c coins, draw some on cardboard and cut them out.

First, we will let them see all the coins 1c, 2c, 5c, 10c, 20c, 1 euro, 2 euro. Name all the coins together with your child. This week we will focus on identifying 1c. Let them feel the money. Infants learn best when they have a sensory experience. Ask the following questions

Find the number on each coin? What is the picture on the front of the coin? Earth. Are both sides of the coin the same? Is there a picture on the back of the coin? What is the symbol on Irish coins? What shape is it? What material is it made from?

These coins are brown in colour and are smaller than the others. Put them in order of size. 1c, 2c, 5c. Which coin is the smallest? 1c Which coin is the biggest? 5c

Note: There is not a coin for each number. We have to use the coins we have to make up that amount/value. Eg there’s no 4 cent coin but we can use a 2c+2c=4c

Page 16: stconlethsns.weebly.com€¦  · Web viewThis theme links with last week as we continue to look at the Emergency Services. I am suggesting the online book “The Emergency Services”

Sorting activity: Ask your child to sort the coins into 4 groups. 1c coins together, 2c coins together, 5c coins together, 10c coins together.

Introducing 2c and 5c. Adding 2c coins is counting in 2’s. Adding 5c coins is counting in 5’s Use real coins and ask them to count up the coins.

When adding 5c+2c+1c=Always start with the coin with the largest value.

Call out a value and get the child to draw the correct amount of coins. Focus on 5c, 2c, 1c questions. For example: Call out 6 cent- Draw 3 2c coins. Do the same for 3 cent, 4 cent, 5 cent, 6 cent, 7 cent, 8 cent, 9 cent, 10 cent. This may sound easy but they must have a very good foundation level understanding before they start 10 cent coins next week. See powerpoint for extra activities.

Toy ShopSet up a small pretend toy shop with a few toys for sale. Price the items between 1c-10c.

Page 17: stconlethsns.weebly.com€¦  · Web viewThis theme links with last week as we continue to look at the Emergency Services. I am suggesting the online book “The Emergency Services”

Today, we will only give the child, 1c, 2c, 5c coins to “buy” something in the shop. For example, the teddy bear costs 7c. The child must use the coins in their hands to pay for the item. 5c+1=2c=7c. Enough to buy the teddy bear. Help them with the role play until they are comfortable to pay by themselves. If they are comfortable with this, increase the prices. Tons of practise needed adding and handling money.

ONLINE MONEY GAMES: https://www.teachingmoney.co.uk/eurosite/euroindex.html Money Machine, Coin Drag, Count up,

Next week we will focus on 10c. Adding 1c, 2c, 5c, 10c coins. Buying items in a slightly more expensive shop.

In school, we break money down into teaching steps and there’s a lot of content. If you go too fast, the students can get confused as they didn’t fully understand the basic information.

4. Science- Sound- Listening- Listen to sounds outside. Name all the sounds that they can hear. Identify quiet sounds and loud sounds. Problem: The siren on the garda car is broken. What could we use instead/ recreate? Experiment: Pupils will use various materials to try to create their own sirens.

5. Geography• Recognize the importance of the role of the garda• Identify the duties of the garda• Create a role play/ small world of a day in the life of a garda

Page 18: stconlethsns.weebly.com€¦  · Web viewThis theme links with last week as we continue to look at the Emergency Services. I am suggesting the online book “The Emergency Services”

Discuss gardaí and their role in protecting citizens and enforcing the law. What do you know about gardaí. Name some jobs that a garda does? Traffic, road accidents, helping people who need help, community support- looking after elderly, making sure everybody follows the law. What does a garda use? What does a garda uniform look like? My Aunt and first cousin are members of the Gardaí. They are part of the traffic core and community divisions. They are working hard to help everyone stay safe during lockdown. Do you know any Gardaí? Record ideas around the garda crest.
