Illuminating a letter Writing in Calligraphy

Instructional Groupings:(How will you have students work together? Whole group, small group, partners, quads, homogeneous, heterogeneous?)

Students will view a powerpoint of Illuminated letters and of former students work. Students will discuss these at their table groups.

Pre-Assessment: (How will you find out about where your students are at for this lesson? What will your pre-assessment look like?

Students will discuss the vocabulary for the lesson as a whole group. If they do not know the vocabulary I will talk with them about the word and teach them what it means. They will write the words down in their sketchbooks.

Steps in the Lesson:Include ideas for whole-class instructions, differentiated activities, guided notes/practice, independent work, engagement strategies, etc…

The class will begin by viewing and discussing a Powerpoint presentation on the history of Illuminated letters. They will learn about the monks who created the letters, what letters were used for and about the status of books and the ability to read. Once the class has discussed the overview of Illuniminated letters and has viewed examples of Medieval and contemporary Illuminated calligraphy, the teacher will demonstrate the process.

Step 1: Decide what letter will be illuminated (Is it the first letter of a selected phrase or is it an Initial?)

Step 2: Print the letter (capital, lower case, italic, plain, etc. will all do)

Stpe 3: Draw around the letter leaving the ends of the outline “open” to define a wide space in the shape of the letter Erase the “bones” (the original printed letter)

Step 4: Add flourishes by extending the lines with quick, spontaneous, loose lines that completes the shape at each opening. This will make the letter more decorative.

**At this point, boxes, circles, diamonds and other shapes can be added behind the letter to fill in the negative spaces.

Step 5: Draw a second outline to add a frame to the letter

Step 6: Fill the letter with patterns or drawings

Designing the letter should take approximately 2-3 class periods. Students will use the light box (graphic designers tool) to transfer their letter and phrase to the final design. This will take one class period. Once transferred, students will use rulers to make any adjustments to the letter for high quality.

Once the letter is drawn and transferred to the final composition, it will be colored with colored pencil.

The teacher will demonstrate four acceptable ways to color effectively with colored pencil. Students will be allowed to use any of the techniques to complete their project.

Formative Assessment Strategies:How will you inform yourself throughout the class period the status of the students’ understanding?

Walk around the room, check for understanding by noting their progress with the lesson and answer any questions students have while they are working.

Closure Activity:This may be a chance to share, or explicit restatement of the goals of the lesson, a summarization opportunity, etc…

Students will complete a Self-Evaluation. (See below)

Post-Assessment:How will you collect and use data to inform your next lesson?

A class critique will be held to allow students to talk about their own work and the work of their classmates.
