B. What is a resume?A resume is a one page or two page summary of your work experience, education and skills. The resume acts much like an advertisement for a company trying to sell something. The resume is your advertisement. You must spend a lot of time creating, proofreading, editing, and perfecting your resume.

A resume is one of the most important pieces of writing you will ever create. A solid resume is the key that will open the door to good jobs.

There are many different formats to resumes. Different jobs may have different resume formats which match them. Check online to see if your future job has a resume format.

Before writing your resume, google “sample (job) resumes” to see what resumes in your field look like.

C. Sections – What should you include on your resume?Heading - name, (no nicknames), contact information (address, phone, email address). Don’t use an unprofessional email address ([email protected]; [email protected])

Objective - career objective/career goal – a one/two sentence explanation about what type of job you are seeking; what is your employment purpose. Take time to create an effective sentence that describes who you are and what you want to do with your career.

Experience (work experience/employment history/employment experience) – include previous jobs that are relevant for the job you are applying for. Include job titles, use action verbs and avoid “I”.

Education – dates you attended school, how long did you attend, what was your major, relevant courses towards the job you’re applying.

References – three people (sometimes more) who have supervised you who could tell others what type of person you are. Avoid using family members and friends.

ADDITONAL HEADINGS INCLUDEActivities / Interests (optional) – relevant organizations, events, or clubs you have joined.

Summary of skills (optional) – special skills that could help you obtain a job. Other optional headers – computer experience, community activities, honors/awards, volunteer experience.

D. Format – How to create a better resume

1. Chronological order - One of the most common ways to list your experience from newest to oldest

2. Consistency – font, size, format, spacing – choose one format and keep it the same throughout your resume! Don’t change half way through your resume!

3. Names – Gwang-ju or Gwangju or Kwangju/ Jeonnam or Chonnam ??? / Ji-hoon or Jihoon or Ji hoon or Ji Hoon

4. Font size – headers are the same font size, description is the same font size. Avoid tiny font size. Times New Roman font is boring! Try to use a different font.

5. Spacing – single spacing

6. ALL CAPITAL LETTERS – be careful of using too many CAPITAL letters

7. Tense – use past tense if you no longer have the job!

8. Dates – Oct 2010 / October 2010 / 10.2010 (consistent throughout your resume & location preference)

9. Bullet points – these can help you list what is important to you

10. Color – Depending on where you apply you could use color to make your resume stand out. However, some companies may think it’s unprofessional (consider where you are applying)

11. Spell check and grammar check – if you make a spelling/grammar mistake, the employer may think you are lazy or stupid

12. Save your resume as a PDF file

13. Objective Statement - Have a good objective statement but remember that your cover letter is also used to highlight your career goals

14. Length - Usually newly graduated students only need a 1-page resume. After you get more experience working then you can create a 2-page (or longer) resume. You may need to adjust margins so everything fits on 1 page.

15. Your industry – Try to match your resume to other resumes in your field. Before creating a resume for a computer graphic designer, google what style of resume other graphic designers are making.

E. Example Resumes1. Examine the sample resume (page 3) – what are your thoughts on it? 2. Examine the other sample resume (page 4) – what is wrong with that resume?3. How are the resumes different (headings, format, font, etc.)?4. Judging by the resumes, what jobs are each person applying for?
