P: In the Name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit.C: Amen.

Confession & Absolution LSB pg. 151P: If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us.C: But if we confess our sins, God- who is faithful and just-

will forgive our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

P: Let us then confess our sins to God our Father.

All: Most merciful God, we confess that we are- by nature- sinful and unclean. We have sinned against You in thought, word and deed; by what we have done and by what we have left undone. We have not loved You with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. We justly deserve Your present and eternal punishment. For the sake of Your Son, Jesus Christ, have mercy on us. Forgive us, renew us and lead us; so that we may delight in Your will and walk in Your ways, to the glory of Your Holy Name. Amen.

P: Almighty God, in His mercy, has given His Son to die for You; and, for His sake, forgives you all your sins. As a Called and ordained servant of Christ- and by His authority- I therefore forgive you all your sins: in the Name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.

C: Amen.

Old Testament Reading Genesis 1:1-5 In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth.  The earth was without form and void, and darkness was over the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters. And God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light.  And God saw that the light was good. And God separated the light from the darkness.  God called the light “Day”, and the darkness He called “Night”. And there was evening and there was morning, the first day. P: This is the Word of the Lord.C: Thanks be to God.

Epistle Reading Romans 6:1-11

What shall we say then? Are we to continue in sin that grace may abound?  By no means! How can we who died to sin still live in it?  Do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into His death?  We were buried therefore with Him by baptism into death, in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, we too might walk in newness of life. For if we have been united with Him in a death like His, we shall certainly be united with Him in a resurrection like His.  We know that our old self was crucified with Him in order that the body of sin might be brought to nothing, so that we would no longer be enslaved to sin. For one who has died has been set free from sin.  Now if we have died with Christ, we believe that we will also live with Him.  We know that Christ, being raised from the dead, will never die again; death no longer has dominion over Him.  For the death He died He died to sin, once for all, but the life He lives He lives to God.  So you also must consider yourselves dead to sin and alive to God in Christ Jesus. P: This is the Word of the Lord.C: Thanks be to God.(please rise)

Alleluia and Verse LSB pg. 156All: Alleluia! Lord, to whom shall we go?

You have the words of eternal life. Alleluia, alleluia.

Gospel Reading Mark 1:4-11P: The Holy Gospel according to St. Mark, the 1st chapterC: (sung) Glory to You, O LordJohn appeared, baptizing in the wilderness and proclaiming a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins.  And all the country of Judea and all Jerusalem were going out to him and were being baptized by him in the river Jordan, confessing their sins.  Now John was clothed with camel’s hair and wore a leather belt around his waist and ate locusts and wild honey.  And he preached, saying, “After me comes He who is mightier than I, the strap of whose sandals I am not worthy to stoop down and untie.  I have baptized you with water, but He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit.” In those days Jesus came from Nazareth of Galilee and was

baptized by John in the Jordan.  And when He came up out of the water, immediately He saw the heavens being torn open and the Spirit descending on Him like a dove.  And a voice came from heaven, “You are My beloved Son; with You I am well pleased.” P: This is the Gospel of the Lord.C: (sung) Praise to You, O Christ

Hymn: “The Star Proclaims the King Is Here” LSB #399The star proclaims the King is here; But, Herod, why this senseless fear? For He who offers heav’nly birth Seeks not the kingdoms of this earth.

The eastern sages saw from far And followed on His guiding star; And, led by light, to light they trod And by their gifts confessed their God.

Within the Jordan’s sacred flood The heav’nly Lamb in meekness stood That He, of whom no sin was known, Might cleanse His people from their own.

And oh, what miracle divine, When water reddened into wine!He spoke the word, and forth it flowed In streams that nature ne’er bestowed.

(please rise)

For this His glad epiphany All glory, Jesus, be to Thee,Whom with the Father we adore, And Holy Spirit evermore.

I believe in God, the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth, and in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord: Who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; He descended into Hell. The third day He rose again from the dead; He ascended into Heaven, and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence He will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit; the holy Christian Church; the communion of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body; and the life everlasting. Amen.Prayers of the Church

And at Cana wedding guest In Thy God-head manifest;Manifest in pow’r divine, Changing water into wine;Anthems be to Thee addressed, God in man made manifest.

Manifest in making whole Palsied limbs and fainting soul;Manifest in valiant fight, Quelling all the devil’s might;Manifest in gracious will, Ever bringing good from ill;Anthems be to Thee addressed, God in man made manifest.

Grant us grace to see Thee, Lord, Present in Thy holy WordGrace to imitate Thee now And be pure, as pure art Thou; That we might become like Thee At Thy great epiphanyAnd may praise Thee, ever blest, God in man made manifest.

“Jesus, Once with Sinners Numbered” LSB #404

Jesus, once with sinners numbered, Had no blemish of His own;In the waters of the Jordan His true worth and work were shown:Heaven opened and the Spirit There descended like a dove,As the Father’s voice resounded. “Hear My Son, the One I love.”

John confessed Him as the Savior “Look, the sinless Lamb of God!”Yet he dared not loose the sandals Of the One God’s love had shod.Oh, how fair the feet of Jesus, Bringing news of peace to us,Christ, the herald of salvation, Preaching mercy from the cross:

This the baptism that our Savior Greatly longed to undergo; This the crimson cleansing needed So the world God’s love might know; This the mission of Messiah As He stepped from Jordan’s stream,He, the chosen and anointed Son of God, sent to redeem.

Jesus, once with sinners numbered, Full obedience was Your path; You, by death, have consecrated Water in this saving bath: Dying to the sin of Adam, Rising to a life of grace; We are counted with the righteous, Over us the cross You trace.

Post-Communion Canticle (sung) LSB pg. 164

Thank the Lord and sing His praise; tell everyone what He has done. Let all who seek the Lord rejoice and proudly bear His Name. He recalls His promises and leads His people forth in joy, with shouts of thanksgiving. Alleluia, Alleluia!

Post-Communion Collect LSB pg. 166P: Let us pray. O God the Father, the fountain and source of all goodness,

who in loving-kindness sent Your only-begotten Son into the flesh: we thank You that, for His sake, You have given us pardon and peace in this Sacrament; and we ask You not to forsake Your children, but always to rule our hearts and minds by Your Holy Spirit; that we may be enabled constantly to serve You, through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.

C: (sung) Amen.

Benediction LSB pg. 166P: The Lord bless you and keep you.

Closing Hymn “As with Gladness Men of Old” LSB #397As with gladness men of old Did the guiding star behold; As with joy they hailed its light, Leading onward, beaming bright; So, most gracious Lord, may we Evermore be led by Thee.

As with joyful steps they sped, Savior, to Thy lowly bed,There to bend the knee before Thee, whom heav’n and earth adore; So may we with willing feet Ever seek Thy mercy seat.

As they offered gifts most rare At Thy cradle, rude and bare,So may we with holy joy, Pure and free from sin’s alloy,All our costliest treasures bring, Christ, to Thee, our heav’nly King.

Holy Jesus, ev’ry day Keep us in the narrow way;And when earthly things are past, Bring our ransomed souls at lastWhere they need no star to guide, Where no clouds Thy glory hide.

In the heav’nly country bright Need they no created light;Thou its light, its joy, its crown, Thou its sun which goes not down; There forever may we sing Alleluias to our King.

WE PREPARE FOR HOLY COMMUNION TODAYSt. Paul, in his letter to the Corinthians, bids us to examine ourselves before receiving our Lord’s Body and Blood. Therefore, to faithfully prepare to receive this Sacrament worthily, we: ► CONFESS that we are sinful people- unwilling and unable to be

righteous according to God’s just Law.► BELIEVE that Jesus shed His Blood for us on the cross for the forgiveness of our sin;► BELIEVE that, in this holy Supper, Jesus gives us His true body

14

Page 15:  · Web viewThe Father’s Word, the Spirit’s flight Anointed Christ in glorious sight As God’s own choice, from Adam’s fall To save the world’ and free us all. (please rise)

and blood in, with, and under the bread and wine – that is, the bread and wine are NOT merely symbols of the body and blood

of Jesus, but truly are united to the Body and Blood of Jesus

Christ, as He said, “Take eat; this is My Body… Take, drink; this is My

Blood.”► INTEND, by the power of the Holy Spirit, repent of our sinful lives and strive to walk according to God’s will. In joyful obedience to the teachings of Holy Scripture, we ask that only those who share unity with us in our confession of doctrine and faith join us at the altar. Guests who are members in good standing of congregations of the Lutheran Church - Missouri Synod are invited to join us in the Holy Supper. If you have questions or would like to have information about joining our fellowship, please visit with the pastor. Thank you.
