A good community is a settlement that promotes human health and well-being that offers rich social, economic and environmental benefits. A healthy and liveable community provides a range of affordable transportation, employment and housing through the concept of Live, Work and Play developments. To attain this the community incorporates several components of daily life: (1) preserving and enhancing valuable natural resources, (2) providing access to affordable, nutritious, and locally produced foods distributed for less cost, and (3) creating a unique sense of community and place (ACLA, 2017). For example, Taiping is an old town in the state of Perak provides plenty of greeneries and hills to its residents. Lake Gardens of the town is the largest recreational space that characterizes the townscape creating a serene and comfortable environment for the people to live in the town. Many houses are equipped with gardens and treed streets that become the green infrastructure of the town. These attributes influenced the residents to attach to the town with strong sense of satisfaction and belonging.

A. Preamble on Community and Its Landscape

Landscape architecture is a discipline that designs a comfortable and safe environment for human community.

"The ability of communities to influence the nature growth, the quality of their environments, and their relationship to their environments" (Glover et al., 2008) is the concern in community planning. Community design embraces community planning, social architecture, community development, and community participation (Sanoff, 2000). Landscape architects work "toward a community-based model of landscape change sensitive to the lives of

citizens for whom the plans being made. The process of landscape chnage naturally elicits divergent reactions from a wide variety of citizens." (Glover et al., 2008).

In Landscape Architecture, community design involves planning and designing shared space for a community for a variety of communal events and activities. In the cities of Solo and Yogjakarta, a communal space is surrounded by residences affording the residents to gather and participate in events such as wedding ceremony, playing gamelan and dancing, and welcoming a crowd of guests to the community. Its focal point is a pendopo, a large shelter for gathering and other social activities.

The concept is based on the notion that the environment works better when the people are actively involved in its creation and management. "Understanding stakeholder values and developing strategies that allow their representation is central to the development of community-based model of landscape change" (Glover et al., 2008).

Alleys and streets are recognised by rural and urban communities as communal place. They afford children to play within their own terms. They can become a temporal market which

B. Aim of Community Planning Studio

After completing the studio program, the department expected you to understand how to plan and design a community space that links its people to the place.

I want you to be critical in your thinking about what landscape architecture can do for human community. I want you to be hungry in knowledge of human community and people's interaction with the environment. This studio program would enable you to think that creating a sustainable human community requires you to value people needs and fit them to the physical environment.

This course aims to impart the knowledge of community planning and design to landscape architecture students that could establish confidence in them to plan and design a public space for a community.
