Global Citizen Project – Mix It Up DayKristen (Johnson) Herich

1) We used the Teaching Tolerance posters to spread awareness that Mix It Up day was coming soon! We encouraged students to learn about similarities and differences as is depicted in this poster.

2) We designed posters for our 2016 Mix It Up theme at Central Elementary. We wanted students to appreciate all the differences between people, just like they appreciate the different colors in a pack of Life Savers.

3) We designed questions that we placed at each lunch table to help students start conversations with people that they don't normally talk to.

4) Give what you can. Students wrote notes that consisted of one word, representing something that they could give to someone else to make their day a little better.

5) Take what you need. Students had the option to place their note on either one of the posters. The hope was that students would acknowledge that other students have the same needs that they do and that they can give to one another to help one another.

6) Students identified things that they could give to others, including loyalty, a hug, a smile, a joke, and friendship.

7) I collaborated with Ashlee Karsteter and Jeff Sizemoore, my fellow pre-service teachers to organize and implement Mix It Up day at Central Elementary. Angela Schmarr, the guidance counselor, posted a tweet about our work.
