Nervous System Notes

Write the following notes in your journal.

Function: The sensory system that helps you respond to internal and external stimuli in your environment.

Two Divisions of the Nervous System:

A. Central Nervous System – Brain and Spinal Cord

B. Peripheral Nervous System – All nerves leading out of the spinal cord to all parts of the body.

Define these terms:

Neuron – A nerve cell.

Cell Body – The central part of a neuron.

Dendrite – A part of a neuron that receives messages from other neurons and sends them to the cell body.

Axon – part of a neuron that carries messages away from the cell body.

Synapse – the space or small gap between an axon and a dendrite that the impulse is carried across.

Acetylcholine – The chemical (released by the axon) that flows across the synapse to stimulate the impulse in the dendrite.

Foldable – drawing of the brain.

Label the drawing according to the diagram below.

Color the drawing to help you identify the parts.

Vocabulary Definitions

Vocabulary Foldable – Glue this into your journal for this station. Use pages 474-479 of your textbook to find these definitions. Some are provided for you below.

Action Potential – part of the process that occurs with the firing of a neuron

Node – region of the axon that lies between each cell.

Reflex – involuntary and nearly instantaneous movement in response to a stimulus.

Synapse – the point at which a nervous impulse passes from one neuron to another.

Threshold – the minimum stimulus needed to achieve an action potential

Functions of the Nervous System

Foldable – Under each flap, describe the structure and function of the diagram. Use the Visualize It box from page 479 in your textbook.

Below the diagram answer the following question:

How do signals move through the Nervous System? (Hint: page 478)
