Welcome to the Siberian Husky Club of Great Britain Aviemore Sled Dog Rally 2020 Sponsored by CSJ, Photizo and Leucillin

From Us: Thank you firstly to our sponsors and all the companies that have donated in one format or another to allow this rally to go ahead. We know that without these sponsors we would not be able to put on the event for everyone to enjoy. We ask that you all meet our sponsors over the weekend to show our appreciation and to investigate the products that they all have to offer. We would also like to thank all of those who came and supported the rally over previous years.

About our Sponsors: We have the pleasure to announce again that CSJ, Photizo and Leucillin have agreed to sponsor the 37th Aviemore Rally. CSJ is our food sponsors have become one of the fastest growing dog food brands in the UK. CSJ now not only focus on foods but also herbal supplements and suitable dog treats. Photizo light therapy is a company dedicated to using light as a non-intrusive method to heal wounds and injuries. Leucillin antiseptic skincare, it is non-toxic, non-irritant and powerful which is growing as a product and company. We are so grateful for their support so that the rally can go ahead again this year.

We are very grateful to TrailBaby Sled Dog and K9 Gear for once again sponsoring the Junior race. Sharon McNicol says she is honoured to be sponsoring the J1 and J2 classes at Aviemore 2019. ‘The junior classes arewonderful – the excitement of both musher and dogs is electric. It is such a joy to see our sport supported by the next generation with such enthusiasm.’ She wishes all the junior competitors taking part good luck and happy trails.

The current team Aviemore have been working hard to develop and change certain areas that we felt needed improving. We appreciate the feedback that we had from the previous Aviemore and have taken this into account. We are committed to developing the event along with our sponsors to make Aviemore even better for this year. There are again a few changes that we have made for the weekend. These will be highlighted throughout the brochure. If there are any questions or queries you have, please contact one of the organisers. We would also like to thank all of those who attended last years’ rally, we hope you all enjoyed yourselves and thank you for making our lives generally easier than the weather made it. Let’s hope the snow and trails are cooperating for this season.

We shall once again be texting information and notices, so please include a mobile number on the entry form so that we can keep you up to date with any Race Information and Notices. Don’t forget to also keep an eye on our Facebook group SHCGB 37th Aviemore Sled Dog Rally and follow us on twitter too #aviemoresleddogrally.

Main Race - most details remain the same as previous years. The A class will remain at the 7.03-mile

Page 3: siberianhuskyclub.org.uksiberianhuskyclub.org.uk/.../2020/01/Brochure-2020-v1.docx · Web viewSponsored by CSJ, Photizo and Leucillin From Us: Thank you firstly to our sponsors and

distance and all A class mushers must use a 4-wheel rig or passenger rig. We hope that the popular fortnight’s training at Feshiebridge will be available. Please keep an eye on the Facebook page for more information. On the Thursday before the event we are going to be holding Press day down at Feshiebridge. This will hopefully allow us time to work on any elements left on the trail (as the last couple of years have made us work hard on it). We are also asking that people do not use the trail until after the event so that the trail can remain in a good condition over the weekend. ALI SPOWART will again be providing the timing facilities. Our usual caterers will be providing the designated Mushers’ cuisine and of course, all the usual toilets, first aid, veterinary, tannoy and waste bin facilities etc. will be on site for the race days.

Rally Rules and temperature- Please make sure you read the rally rules. These are available in the 2019-20 Rally Brochure, on the web site and displayed on the information board at the race. All rules need to be adhered to very carefully. Given the very strange weather we have been experiencing in recent years we would like to remind you that the rally organisers will be monitoring temperatures during the event. When the temperature rises to 15 degrees °C at any time (when taken in the shade at or near the Start Line) the Event shall be reviewed by the organisers and may be stopped. The rally organisers may, however, if they feel that the temperature/humidity combination is too high, review the event before this level is reached. It is always up to each musher to decide if they want to run their team as you know your dogs best. In addition, please make sure you listen to information carefully as if adverse weather or conditions affect the trail then the organisers will be giving out information about the trail and any changes to running times. We will do everything we can to let people run their dogs but be aware this is not always possible.

Marshalling duties will hopefully be published in advance on the Club Website but will be given to you on the Friday night at booking in for Musher’s Meeting and will be on display at Mushers’ Market at the Macdonald Hotel Resort. Please make a note of your duty and take your turn, arriving in good time at the designated assembly point; at least 15 minutes before running starts. In addition to this we will also be holding a Marshals’ meeting that will outline the expectations of the duties. This way we can ensure the race runs safely and efficiently for all. Again, this year, we have given the option to marshal on the trail for a half day on the entry form – great way to see lots of teams and take photos or just enjoy the amazing peaceful scenery. PLEASE NOTE ANYONE WHO DOES NOT ATTEND MARSHALS OR MUSHERS’ MEETING WILL NOT BE ABLE TO RUN. Additionally, if anyone is not competing and is prepared to commit to duties please let one of the organisers know. We cannot allow people to compete if we do not have the correct number of marshals on trail so we are grateful to anyone who can volunteer.

Trek – AMWA – with a little help from their friends - are once again in charge. Remember there will not be catering at the finish and don’t forget there is no training at Feshiebridge on the Tuesday morning until all the trek entrants have cleared Inshriach Forest.

Please note that Mushers’ Market, Mushers’ meeting and presentation are going to be held at the Aviemore Macdonald resort. We would like to thank the Coylumbridge Hotel for their support over the years and for all that they have done to support the event. We would also like to thank Macdonalds resort for welcoming us to their venue and allowing us to hold the event here. We are hoping that this will create a strong relationship that will grow over the future years.

The Mushers Market will be at 3pm.

The Mushers Meeting will be starting at 5pm. Remember all competitors should attend Friday’s Mushers’ meeting for the class(es) that they are competing in.

The Marshals Meeting will be held after Musher’s Meeting. All competitors and marshals must attend this meeting. Competitors will not be able to run if they do not attend.

The Marquee- Continuing with our working with the local community the marquee will be housing local sellers and businesses. They will displaying local produce and products for you to have the ability to purchase on site.

Discover Dogs- We are not asking for you to give up time to go into the marquee as it has been in

Page 4: siberianhuskyclub.org.uksiberianhuskyclub.org.uk/.../2020/01/Brochure-2020-v1.docx · Web viewSponsored by CSJ, Photizo and Leucillin From Us: Thank you firstly to our sponsors and

previous years but asking if you could display information about your breed or breeds of sled dog. We would also appreciate if people where possible can have conversations with spectators about the different breeds.

Entries – Please, please get your forms in early, we will be processing the draw based on when you get your entries in so to avoid issues, get your forms in as early as you can. We will again have to start a waiting list if we reach capacity entries for the event. If for some reason you need to change CLASS or MUSHER, it will have to be received by 12pm Sunday 12 January 2020 – forms are available on the Club Website or from the Rally Organiser. These will also be available on the clubs’ Facebook page and the events’ Facebook page. Dog changes can be made on the Friday night of the Mushers’ Meeting – there will be a form available at the Reception Desk and a box to post them in. PLEASE NOTE: Photos of entry forms will not be accepted; entry forms will only be accepted in hard copy or word/pdf file formats. Any photos of forms will be asked to complete in the correct format and will change your placing in the queue if required.

Club’s Trail/Rally Etiquette – Check the Club Rules and extend the philosophy to all you meet throughout the time you are in Aviemore and the surrounding area. Please remember your forest manners and clear up after your dogs wherever you are throughout your stay. At the Rally, please also keep filled poo bags with you or place in the bins provided; do not leave them on the walk up to the start line or finish line and please clear up around your van when you leave. Bins will not be provided at Feshiebridge so please ensure that you clean up and take away any mess. To help reduce cross contamination we respectfully ask that you park in the same place on the Sunday as you did on the Saturday. Also note that shouting and swearing or any action that is in a disrespectful manner will not be tolerated at dogs, competitors, spectators or organisers and may result in a yellow or red card under the club’s disciplinary system.

As ever we hope you enjoy your stay in Aviemore. Don’t forget to bring both your rig and sled if you want to make sure you can compete. We hope we have covered most areas, but if you have a question, please contact any of Team Aviemore including, Pete Jones, Steve Smith or Heather Smith

Best regards…. The Committee and Team Aviemore

Working with the Media

Why do we need Press and TV coverage?

We really need your help to thank our sponsors. Without the support of our sponsors there would be no Aviemore rally! How can we thank them? By getting as much media coverage of their name as we can, both before and after the race. Our sponsors have been amazing as all previous sponsors have been, but THEY ARE NOT A CHARITY! They are sponsoring the Aviemore race to increase awareness of their name and their products as well as allowing us to enjoy our sport. So please any coverage we can get is gratefully received.

What do we do?

The Club contact the dog papers, the national papers in addition to radio and TV companies. We always need mushers and dogs for interviews and photos running up to the race, especially in Aviemore on Thursday and Friday of race week. Unless you have said you are not happy to be contacted on your entry form............ we may call you to ask for help. Please note on your forms that there is a change to the way we ask people if they are happy to be contacted by the media and sponsors. This is now an opt out system not an opt in. We have changed this as we feel that it will give us a better understanding of who would and wouldn’t be happy to talk to the press and sponsors.

How can you help?

Please contact your local paper, radio station and TV company and tell them about you and your team. You can get the number from the paper, the phone book or the internet. Tell them you are a local musher taking part in the biggest sled dog race in the UK. Offer to meet the reporter and allow them to take pictures of your dogs. If you are worried about giving your address, ask them only to mention the town or county you come from.

Always call the race the Siberian Husky Club of Great Britain and CSJ Aviemore Sled Dog Rally and please make mention to Photizo and Leucillin as often as possible.

Wear your Aviemore sweatshirt if you have one in any photos. Please, please NEVER wear anything with Other brands, clubs or organisations, including other dog food companies - they are NOT sponsoring Aviemore!!!

There will be press releases available on the Club website you can give to the reporter and any information and advice can be gained through any of the members of Team Aviemore

Finally, it’s always good to help our Welfare Team by explaining the good, the bad, the ugly and the

Page 6: siberianhuskyclub.org.uksiberianhuskyclub.org.uk/.../2020/01/Brochure-2020-v1.docx · Web viewSponsored by CSJ, Photizo and Leucillin From Us: Thank you firstly to our sponsors and

wonderful points about owning sled dogs.

Please tell Heather Smith or Pete Jones about any coverage you get and if possible, send a copy of any newspaper articles to either of these. Contact Heather Smith on 01384 822406 /[email protected] or Pete Jones 07841791973/ [email protected] for any advice or help.

Thank you for helping us and our sponsors to ensure our favourite race continues for many years to come!

Please note the following changes/expectations:There is going to be a continuation of the new method of drawing positions of running. This

will still commence in a random format; however, it will take on a similar format to that used in the Yukon draw. Entrants will be put into the order of their entries. They will be called up to pull out a

number. That number will be their position within the order for the start of the race.

The Race Trail at Glenmore Forest

Forest Enterprise acquired Glenmore in 1923 from the Duke of Richmond and Gordon. The area totals 3,850 acres. As this was once a sporting estate, it still contains a wide variety of birds and animals. Red Deer roam the hills overlooking Loch Morlich and there is an abundance of Roe Deer on the lower hills, joined more recently by a herd of Reindeer. Badgers, Otters, Wild Cats and Foxes are often seen as well as a refuge for Red Squirrels and the Blue Hare.

The Serpent's Loch Trail

The trail runs along the left bank of Loch Morlich giving an attractive view across the Loch to the Shepherd's Hill Peak at 2,700 ft. It is entirely on Forestry plantation and if you look up, you may be lucky enough to see golden eagles around the edges of the Forest.

The Course

This is described as 'an easy walk' in the Forestry Enterprise's brochure. The Start lies just over the wooden bridge and runs parallel to the ski road for a short distance before entering the forest. The trail is a designated cross-country ski course and is clearly defined. The first part of the course is quite demanding, but then runs to the Finish without great problem. The trail can be tough on dogs' feet - the local stone is granite - and care should be taken at all times; even when training.

Course Distance

A Class: 7 miles approx.B, C, E and D Classes: 4 miles approx.

Marshal Points

No. 1 by Forest Entrance Gate No. 2 by Water Butt Turn No. 3 at the Eastern end of the Loch Morlich No. 4 by the Old Quarry

How to get there

The course can be found on Ordnance Survey Sheet no. 36 (Grantown and Cairngorm) ... reference 9709.

Take the ski road from Aviemore. At Coylumbridge continue along the ski road, DO NOT TURN towardsNethybridge. After three miles approx., Loch Morlich will be on your right. Continue past the Loch andright into the HERONSFIELD CAR PARK. Large teams (not wanting to stake out dogs) use the left car park until full, then with all other teams to the right. If you want to stake out your dogs, then please use the larger, lower car park. We do not recommend that you park on the road, however if you do so, please do not move any cones or cause any obstructions. Anyone found doing so will be asked to leave the event.

The Practice Trails Training at Inshriach Forest

This area is also Forestry Enterprise land being situated south of the Loch an Eilein, forming part of the vast forests at the foot of the Cairngorms. A wealth of birds and animals can be found here as well as numerous plants and fungi in season.

The Moor of Feshie Trail

The trail runs parallel to the B.970 Inverdruie to Kingussie road in a figure of eight through woodland, affording wonderful views across to the Cairngorm mountain range in the distance. The trail can be varied in distance but is usually traversed clockwise by the dog teams.

The Course

This is the training course to be used any time in the Event Period except on the morning of The Trekuntil all participants have cleared the trail. The Glenmore trails can only be run on the Practice Day, Race Days and as a part of the Trek. There is quite a steep hill (up and down) on the upper part of the course and care should also be taken when meeting other teams on the trail. The same surface conditions apply as for Glenmore and care must be taken of your dogs' feet to avoid injury.

How to Get There

From Aviemore, take the B.970, turning right in Inverdruie (signed Feshiebridge). Continue for approx five miles and turn left at Feshiebridge just before a sharp bend (signed Glenfeshie).

Parking

We cannot park on the roadside at Inshriach. Please turn into the forest at Feshiebridge and park alongthe forest trails. Care will obviously need to be taken to allow access and turning facilities both for ourselves and Forest Enterprise vehicles and, of course, please start your teams from the cross-roads. See the map for details.

Course Distance - Lower loop only 2.5 miles approx., combined with upper loop 5.5 miles approx.

Trails must be run clockwise All dogs must be kept on leads always and all dog mess is cleaned up before you leave. We are in danger

of losing this venue if it is not left in immaculate condition.

The Siberian Husky Club of Great BritainAviemore Sled Dog Rally 2020

Inshriach to Glenmore Long Distance Trek

The AMWA Team will be co-ordinating the trek event this year but please don’t forget helpers are always needed - not only out on the course but also to ferry vehicles etc. As always, the aim is for participants to enjoy working their teams over a longer distance and more challenging terrain, without the competitive element of a sprint race. The trek route runs for 10.5 miles with a total ascent of 750ft and descent of 535ft. This route may be extended under certain circumstances. Teams of 2-6 can run, but passengers will only be allowed with four dogs upwards. The Club's Working Rally Rules will apply in all other aspects, together with additional items of equipment andrecommendations - see list below. Please note only dogs eligible to compete in SHCGB rallies may take part in the trek.

Teams will be passing through four separate Estates; the first part is well known to those of you who have been to Aviemore in years past, being sections of the Moor of Feshie course. The trail then passes into the Scottish National Heritage Reserve and it is here that some of Scotland's most beautiful countryside can be seen. We are extremelyappreciate their kindness in allowing the Club entry to these trails and it must be said that on this section of the course teams must give even more than their usual careful consideration of the environment. For this reason, no practising or training will be permitted on this section of the trail whatsoever. Anyone found doing so will be immediately disqualified from this event and may incur further disciplinary action. The next stretch of the Trek runs through into the Rothiemurchus Estate via Loch Gamnha and on to The Loch an Eilein - 'Old Timers' will remember this part of the trail from the first Aviemore Rallies. Turning away from the Loch (follow the sign to the Lairig Ghru) the Trek continues to circumnavigate the base of The Cairngorms, across the river or the Cairngorm Footbridgeand up to Piccadilly. Heading down towards the ski road, the trail then turns right for the last stretch into the finish at the Heronsfield car park.

It is appreciated that the start and finish points are well apart and teams participating may require ‘back-up’ supportto transfer vehicles. Every effort will be made to assist – please let us know at the Trek Mushers meeting if this presents a problem. Please note that it takes up to an hour to drop a vehicle off at the finish and return to the start – all teams in your group must have completed a rig inspection and be ready to depart at your given start time.

Page 16: siberianhuskyclub.org.uksiberianhuskyclub.org.uk/.../2020/01/Brochure-2020-v1.docx · Web viewSponsored by CSJ, Photizo and Leucillin From Us: Thank you firstly to our sponsors and

Please remember this is an event for the enjoyment of working sled dogs and is no way to be considered a race. The trail is not arduous, but very rough in places. Consideration for your team is most important. Teams must adhere to the designated trail. Drivers must endeavour to familiarise themselves with the trail prior to the event - failure to do so is irresponsible and could result in teams being put at risk. The first section can be checked during your training sessions; the section through the SNH Reserve is easily walked from the Loch an Eilein car park andis well worth the effort!

The Trek passes through forest and moorland on the Northern side of the Cairngorm Mountains. This time of year the weather could be harsh and changeable - a nice morning could end up a very wintry afternoon - so the following are some recommendations to help you enjoy your day and a list of the equipment you will need. There are one or two extras precautions to bear in mind in such an event so please read the following notes carefully:

Group start times will be allotted at the Trek Mushers meeting on Sunday evening and confirmed by textmessage.

All participants in the trek must attend the mushers meeting, which will take place directly after the prize giving, to collect their trek bib. The onus will again be on the mushers to organise themselves into groups before the meeting and a team leader will present a completed ‘team sheet’ to the organisers.

There is now a separate AMWA entry form for the trek, which must be completed. Payment should still be done on the main rally entry form. The AMWA entry forms, which include dogs’ details, can be submitted beforehand (preferred) or at the Mushers meeting.

First timers will be required to run in groups along with experienced teams

ALL COMPETITORS/TEAMS WILL BE REQUIRED TO TAKE A MAP AND HAND IT IN AGAIN AT THE FINISH TO INDICATE THAT EVERYONE FROM THAT TEAM IS SAFELY HOME. ***NO EXCEPTIONS***ALL MUSHERS MUST WEAR A SAFETY HELMET AS PER AMWA EVENT RULES

Essential Items to have with you:

Completed contact form Weatherproof clothing Bowls and water adequate for the size of your team Functional dog bag must be available within your Group. This is because you must have a means of transporting an injured dog and you may have to walk with your rig and the other Members of your Team to the next Marshal Point Two snub lines. This is so that you can tether both ends of the outfit if you need to stop for any length of time Spare dog lead Whistle. Note: The recognised distress signal is six long blasts on the whistle repeated at intervals

Additional Items that may be Useful

Food and drink for the day Spare clothing (and a dry set at the Finish) Map, small personal first aid kit Spare dog boots (if used) Spare wheel and tyre, pump, puncture repair kit and suitable tools

General Notes about the Trek

Mushers are requested to be respectful of the environment, the flora and fauna and other countryside users.

Remember that the route takes place on private land and a Nature Reserve. Leave the trail as you would wishto find it

Anyone leaving the Trek early must inform Control that they are safe. We do check that everyone who starts does cross the Finish Line and do not want to spend hours searching for a ‘missing’ musher who has simply gone home for an early tea.

The trail will be marked out with coloured tape, which will be shown at the Trek Mushers Meeting Marshals will officiate at the river crossing. Their decision will be final as to whether it is safe to take teams through the river or not. A stake-out chain will be provided either side of the river so that you can take dogs over the bridge one or two at a time

Anybody booked in for the Trek and not intending to turn up MUST notify the Trek Organisers so we don’t waste any more time than necessary

If you do intend to stop for a break early on the trail, please let us know at the Mushers’ Meeting and we will try to get these teams off early

Previously we have been given permission to use the full Glenmore Trails when the Trek could not go ahead due to poor weather conditions. Please note only Mushers participating in the Trek are allowed access to the Race Trails on the Tuesday run and then only the designated parts, unless otherwise stated bythe Organisers.

Emergency Arrangements

In the event of an emergency arising appropriate First Aid should be given at the scene and the Emergency Services should only be called if needed. (Police, Ambulance, Mountain Rescue – 999).

The closest Marshal or Trek Control should be contacted as soon as is practicable with information of who is involved; what the problem is; where it has happened; what has been done; what has happened to the dogs;their location etc. Trek Control will then take any appropriate action.

Any liaison with the Press should be through a Club Official or a Club Press Officer. Individual Members should not comment upon a situation.

Please contact AMWA if you have any queries or questions.

Weight Pull Competition

We are looking positive to be able to hold a weight pull at Aviemore this year. We are working hard with other organisations to be able to put this on. Please keep an eye on the Aviemore Facebook page for more information.

Junior Mushers' Event

Kindly sponsored by TRAILBABY, hosted by Ewan and Kayleigh Robertsonthe Junior Event at this rally will be split into two age groups:

J1 8 -11 years with one dog

J2 12 - 16 years with two dogs

For the welfare of the dogs and safety of the mushers, please take note of the following:

The Musher's Parent or Responsible Adult must be a Member of the SHCGB.

The Musher must produce head protection at scrutineering time and this must be worn, properly adjusted, for the duration of their event. Cycle style skull protector is the minimum acceptable.

At least one Handler and Marshal must be available to assist the Mushers for the duration of the event. This is an essential requirement - without Marshals the Event will NOT run and it is the responsible adult for each competitor's duty to ensure their attendance on the day.

The Musher must demonstrate their ability to effectively lock the braked wheels of their rig or set the claw brake of their sled to the Scrutineer. If there is any doubt as to the ability of the Musher to carry out the above, then the Rally Organisers’ decision will be final as to whether the Musher can participate.

It is expected that common sense will prevail when matching dogs to a Junior Musher.

Dogs should be known to the Musher and easily controlled by them.

For safety reasons, in the event of snow conditions the Organisers strongly recommend that a drag mat is fitted to all juniors’ sleds in addition to a claw brake.

The Pugh Cup- Is like the Quest or Iditarod trophy given to someone at the event who has gone over and above to help others or losing their place in a race by helping others in trouble. Nominations are asked for and the most rewarding candidate is selected for the award.this is not how these trophies have been awarded for a few years now. I think we should go back to their original purpose.

The Mike Neito Memorial Trophy- for an unsung hero or heroes in the club, does not have to be connected to Aviemore. each year the recipient should nominate the next winner.

These trophies are connected to Aviemore and over the years have either been confused with each other or have been misinterpreted. As Team Aviemore we feel it is important to re-establish their original meanings, hence the reason we have added in the meanings this year to the brochure.
