Shot type When would it be used?

4 Establishing shot

This sets the scene and where the character is standing so that the viewer can take in both at the same time.

5a Pull focus start

Pulls the subject into focus and blurs the background.

5b Pull focus end

6 Dutch angle This is used to show a disorientated state of the character or scene. It is where the roll axis is not on the horizon line.

7 MS This shows the character from mid-thigh upwards. It was used a lot in cowboy films so that the gun holsters were in shot. Shows the subject in more detail whilst still showing the environment too.

8 Birds eye Shows where the character or direction of the camera is moving. Gives the audience a wider view of the environment with more detail.

9a Panstart

To give the audience a better view of the environment and establishing the scene.

9b Pan End

To give the audience a better view of the environment and establishing the scene.

10 CU This shows the character in more detail, especially their emotions and how they are feeling. It can also be used to show where a character is looking.
