Executive Summary

Microsoft Corporation will be donating advanced-technology software to the USC Darla Moore School of Business and incorporating an Executive in Residence program. To announce this partnership, Bill Gates will be speaking at a press conference in McCutchen House, on the University’s campus, on Thursday, September 8, 2011 at 10:30 a.m.

Microsoft decided to donate the technology to the Moore School of Business after carefully considering many of the top-rated business schools in the country. The partnership between Microsoft and the School of Business will increase Microsoft’s presence in the education world, as well as strengthen the University’s business program, which is already internationally recognized.

The following pages contain the plans for travel, accommodations and details of the press conference.

Columbia, South Carolina

Columbia is the state capital and largest city in the U.S. state of South Carolina. The population was 129,272 according to the 2010 census. Columbia is the county seat of Richland County, but a portion of the city extends into neighboring Lexington County. The city is the center of a metropolitan statistical area of 767,598, the largest within the state. The city's name comes from a poetic synonym for America, derived from the name of Christopher Columbus.

Located 13 miles (21 km) northwest of South Carolina's geographic center, Columbia is the primary city of the Midlands region of South Carolina, which comprises several counties in the central portion of the state. The city lies at the confluence of two rivers, the Saluda and the Broad, which merge at Columbia to form the Congaree River. CNNMoney.com named Columbia as one of America's 25 best places to retire, and US News & World Report ranked the city sixth on its 2009 America's Best Affordable Places to Retire list.

USC Darla Moore School of Business

The Moore School is perhaps best known for its outstanding leadership in international business education and research. For the past thirteen years, the school's undergraduate major in international business has been ranked No. 1 in that specialty, and its International Master of Business Administration program has been ranked No. 1 or No. 2 for 20 consecutive years by U.S. News & World Report. In 2009, the Financial Times of London ranked the school's MBA programs at No. 38 among U.S. universities—ahead of institutions such as Ohio State University, Wake Forest University, and the University of Notre Dame.
