What Employers Are Looking For When They HireThe top eight things employers are hoping to see in job applicants.

By Alison GreenOct. 10, 2012 SHARE

Alison Green

In a tight job market, with employers able to be pickier and pickier about who they hire, it's easy for job seekers to start wondering what it takes to get a job. In a sea of qualified candidates, what are employers looking for in the people they choose to interview? Here are eight key things that employers are looking for when they review job applicants:

1. First and foremost, can you do the job? This isn't about whether you think you can do the job; employers are looking for concrete evidence in your past that shows that you can. This doesn't mean that you need to have done this particular job with this particular title before, but it does mean that you need to have a track record of success in the skills that the position requires.

2. Are you going to be reasonably easy to work with? No matter how skilled you are, most employers don't want to hire someone who's high maintenance, rude, negative, volatile, or overly sensitive.

3. Will you be satisfied with the job or will you be looking to leave within six months? Most employers want to hire people who will stick around for a solid block of time (usually at least two years, and more for senior-level positions). They also want to hire people who will be happy with the job, because unhappy people tend to be less productive and a drain on other employees' morale.

4. Are you reasonably likeable? You don't need to be a charmer on the level of George Clooney, but you do need to be someone your interviewer can envision working with every day without feeling stomach pains.

5. Do you seem like you can put up with whatever the negatives of the job are? Every job has downsides, whether it's a difficult boss or a long commute or an office culture that makes it hard for new ideas to blossom. Employers want to make sure that you're going to have at least a reasonable "immunity" level to whatever the more difficult elements of the job will be.

Page 5: drholbrook.weebly.com€¦  · Web viewResearch Reassessment:. The reason you are receiving this is that you have not turned in your research paper, and will fail for the semester

6. Will you fit in with the company culture? Do you seem like you'd easily embrace the culture, or do you seem like you'd struggle to assimilate? Company culture matters because it's the invisible force that controls "how we do things here."

7. Do you have a strong work ethic? It's not enough to just show up at work every day and do the minimum required. Employers are looking for candidates who care about getting things done and who don't start distracting the receptionist or open up Facebook or Gmail the moment the boss leaves for lunch.

8. How enthusiastic are you about the job? Is this just one job of hundreds you're applying to, or do you have a special interest in this one? Employers would rather hire someone who will be excited to come to work than someone who sees it as "just a job."

What Employers Look ForContact UsCenter for Career & Professional Development

“WHAT DO EMPLOYERS WANT?” A national survey of employer recruiters of recent college graduates found that most employers are looking for the same skill set, no matter the industry or organization.  Read the skills below and think about your level of competency or experience.  We have also provided some resources that might assist John Jay students in further honing these need areas.

Communication (Oral and Written):  If this list of skills were a pie chart, communication would take up over half of the graph.  Good written and spoken communication skills are the most important factor that many employers will use to screen potential candidates for a job.  Can you speak in front of a group, share an idea with your boss, draft important memoranda?  John Jay has several resource centers like the Writing Center, Center for English Language Support, Communication Arts Lab, and more.    You can practice these skills in the classroom, by participating in student organizations, or  participating in activities like the Debate Team.

Leadership / Teamwork:  The ability to work with a group of people to complete a task is crucial to any workplace in the new economy.  Employers will look for evidence of this skill on your resume using clues like student organization leadership, volunteerism, previous work experience in managing staff or clients.  The Office of Student Life is a great place to start if you are looking for leadership opportunities!

Critical Thinking:  This is the process of actively and skillfully conceptualizing, analyzing, synthesizing, and/or evaluating information gathered from observation, experience, reflection, reasoning, or communication as a guide to belief and action.  Can you look at a problem and think of a way to solve it?  Critical thinking is a skill you will learn in many areas of your time at John Jay including in class, in clubs, or in interactions with your peers.  Employers will look for evidence of this through stories of your accomplishments in the workplace, internship, volunteer site, or at school.  Tell them a story about a time you made suggestions to solve an issue or better a process and you’ll shine!

Initiative: Taking initiative means being forward thinking and understanding where your skills and experiences might help the organization succeed.  Being slightly ahead of the curve will assist you in finding success in the workplace.  This is another skill where the employer will look for examples of your initiative on your resume and in the interview.  Be ready to tell a story and highlight your accomplishments!

Work Ethic: Having a good work ethic means many things.  It encompasses your daily work habits like punctuality and communication, a positive attitude, and meeting or exceeding expectations of others.  How will an employer recruiter assess this?  On your resume, they will look for examples of how your work has furthered the goals of the organization you worked for.  In an interview, they will notice things like your dress and punctuality and ask you about examples of your accomplishments.  Your references will also be strong indicators of the work ethic you bring to a new employer.  The best way to build this experience and get those references is through practice, field-based work while in college through part-time jobs, volunteer opportunities, or internships (either academic or not).

How to Get Fired

As About.com's Career Planning Guide I have the opportunity to visit many of my fellow career advice sites on the Web. Through my extensive virtual travels I have found that articles about succeeding on the job abound. But, what if you wanted to know how to get fired? Could you find an article that would tell you how to perform so poorly on the job that your employer, with a swish of his or her hand, would summarily dismiss you? I looked around and found nothing that fit the bill. So I decided to write such an article myself. P.S. If you came here looking for advice on how to stay employed, just do the opposite of everything I tell you here.

Arrive late for work Being on time is for wimps. Drag yourself out of bed whenever you feel like it. Stop to run an errand on your way to the office.

Don't forget the coffee No not for your boss -- for yourself! You're already late so why not stop for a cup of coffee on the way to work? Don't forget to get a muffin or a roll too (crumbs on your tie look really good).

Eat at your desk I mean your coffee and roll, not your lunch silly. Why would you want to work through lunch anyway? And take your time — you're in no hurry to start working.

Take a long lunch An hour for lunch? Are they nuts? That can't possibly be enough time to get together with an old friend and run a few more errands.

Make personal phone calls If you can't make your phone calls from the office, when else will you find the time? Don't make those calls short and sweet -- chat away.

Speaking of chatting... Let's not forget about the good old Net. You can go into a chat room any time of day, so why waste your precious personal time.

Send lots of email Use those eight hours at work to take care of all that personal email. Oh and don't forget to use your work email address.

Download, download, download... Your connection is much faster at work than on your home pc. And besides, there are some things you wouldn't want your significant other to see.

Make the customers/clients really mad There are several ways to do this. If you deal with customers in person, ignore them while you talk to your co-workers. Don't have answers to their questions. If most of your contact is by phone, keep yours busy so clients can't get through. If they bother to leave a message, don't return their phone calls.

Don't ever go beyond your job description Even when a project is down to the wire and your help is desperately needed, just remember: "It's not your job."

Leave work early Who made that five o'clock rule anyway? If you leave 15 minutes early think of how much you can get done before dinner.

Party hardy Nights are made for partying. Don't worry — you can sleep late tomorrow. After all, you do plan to get to work late, don't you?
