EnglishWe are going to have a weekly SPAG (spelling, punctuation and grammar) lesson to focus on these skills with the remainder of the week being used for a unit of work.

Our units of work will include persuasive writing, play scripts and poetry. We will study play scripts to see how they differ to stories, as well as write and perform a section for a play. In persuasive writing we will look at how to make our point of view more persuasive to the reader. In poetry we will focus on building vocabulary for impact.

Mathematics

We will begin the year by consolidating our number knowledge using the four mathematical operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication and division) and place value, working with numbers in the thousands. This will include applying these skills to arithmetic questions and word problems. The times tables will be regularly reviewed and our superhero tests carried out.

We will explore different units of measure (including length, weight and time) and do this in a practical way using appropriate equipment.

Science – classification of animals and their habitats

In our unit on animals we will be using keys to classify animals into their different categories.

We will also look at habitats and explore some of the outside area at school to see what lives there.

MFL

We will be learning classroom commands and classroom equipment, asking every day questions like asking for help, asking the time, etc. We will also learn the numbers 1-100. This term’s focus will be mostly on speaking and listening.

Computing

This year’s ICT focuses mostly on using code. Logo is the first programme we will use, where we must create the correct code to complete different tasks (such as drawing a square). We will also use Word to help improve typing skills and PowerPoint to demonstrate their learning in topic work. IPads may also be used during lessons to help us conduct research and use apps appropriate to our learning (e.g. story creator).

PE

We will be continuing with swimming lessons this term.

Dance will also be covered along with gymnastics.

Arts & Music

In art, we will look at some different mediums that we can use to add colour to drawings such as paint, water colours, pencil and pastels.

For music, pupils have the opportunity to join miniband if they wish to continue learning the trumpet.

RE & PSHE

We are continuing our study of Christianity this term by looking at the stories about God and how a belief in God can impact upon people’s lives. We will also look at the stories of Jesus and consider the impact he had upon the people he met.

In PSHE we will be looking at emotions and how we express them with others.

Geography & History

Our first topic is the Stone Age. We will look to see when they lived, the types of houses they lived in and the food they ate. We will contrast their way of life with how we live today.

Our second topic is Ancient Egypt. We will use an atlas to locate Egypt in the world and identify its main physical features. From a historical point of view we will look to see how the Ancient Egyptians lived and the structure of their society. We will also look at the importance of the River Nile in ancient times compared to today. There will be some code cracking to see if we can decipher the Egyptian number system and alphabet!
