Creating a wiki in wikispaces Go to www.wikispaces.com. Click on Wikis for Individuals and Groups.

Click on Join Now.

Fill in the registration details then click Join.

Once you have completed all registration details, your new wiki will appear with a pop-up window of “Getting Started” information. This has lots of useful information on how to set up your wiki. If you don’t want to see this window every time to log on to your wiki, click Turn off “Getting Started”.

Select Yes under Make a Wiki?

Select Private

Request upgrade to free private wiki for educators

Your current wiki is set to Private for free for 30 days only. You will need to request a free upgrade for the wiki to stay private forever.

Click on Manage Wiki on the left hand side menu. Click on Subscription.

At the bottom of the screen click Request your free K-12 plan wiki.

Check the certification box and click Request a Complimentary Plus Upgrade.

Request NSWDET to unblock your wiki

By default, any wikis you create are blocked by NSW DET due to privacy issues. NSW DET will unblock your wiki if you send in an unblock request. You need to make sure that your wiki is set to private.

Go to http://portal.det.nsw.edu.au and log on.

Under the My Applications tab click on Internet Filtering – Web Filter Check.

Click on Web Filter Check , type in your wiki’s URL into the box then click Submit.

The screen will indicate who the wiki can be accessed by. Note that the wiki in the screen shot below has been unblocked by NSW DET after a request. Your wiki should say “Blocked” for everyone except Staff. Click on Request to Block/Unblock/Categorise a site.

Click Here and follow the steps.

Changing the look and feel of your wiki

Click Manage Wiki on the right hand side menu. Click Look and Feel.

You can change the colours and add the school logo to your wiki by following the prompts on this page.

Creating a New Page

Click New Page on the right hand side menu. Give your page a name, add tags if you wish and click Create.

You will be taken to a page that lets you add content to that page.

Inviting people

Click Manage Wiki on the right hand side menu and click on Members.

Enter the email addresses of your students or other wiki members.
