English Lesson 1 18th May2020Learning Intention: To orally rehearse sentences To write statements about the moon Success Criteria: I can write statements about the moon

Page 5: stjamesthegreat.southwark.sch.ukstjamesthegreat.southwark.sch.uk/.../2020/05/...1.docx  · Web viewMonday. Tuesday. Wednesday. Thursday. Friday. Feelings . Calendar . English. Phonics

Last week you finished your work on Beegu by writing your own story. Well done if you did this! So, now we are ready to move on.....

This morning I was watching the news and saw an amazing announcement:

BREAKING NEWSThe moon has disappeared. The authorities are on the case but have no leads. The moon has vanished into thin air. Goodness knows where it could be.... I couldn’t believe it when I saw this on the news this morning! Have you noticed that the moon had disappeared? You could ask members of your family at home about this. When was the last time they saw the moon? I think we need to find out some information about the moon to help us with this situation. What do you know about the moon?

Draw a picture of the moon and write down all of the information you know about the moon around your picture. Practise saying your sentences out loud before writing them. You could ask someone at home to help you with this.

Do you know if all of the information that you wrote about the moon is correct? Check this and find out some more facts about the moon by clicking on the link below:https://www.natgeokids.com/uk/discover/science/space/facts-about-the-moon/

Now, you can sort out which statements that you wrote about the moon are true and which are false. You could use the table below or copy it. In red below are some that I wrote. I wonder if you can sort out which are true and false as well as the ones that you wrote.

Page 6: stjamesthegreat.southwark.sch.ukstjamesthegreat.southwark.sch.uk/.../2020/05/...1.docx  · Web viewMonday. Tuesday. Wednesday. Thursday. Friday. Feelings . Calendar . English. Phonics

The moon goes through phases each month. Nobody lives on the moon. There is a man on the moon. The moon has craters. The moon is made of cheese.

True False

Challenge: See if you can do some research on the internet to find out about the moon’s cycle and the terms ‘waxing’ and ‘waning’.

English Lesson 2 19th May2020Learning Intention: To use adjectives to describe a noun Success Criteria: I can describe the moon using adjectives I can create a poster

After finding out that the moon had disappeared yesterday, I am really worried about the moon!Did you see the moon last night? Is it still missing? How can we find out what happened?

Page 7: stjamesthegreat.southwark.sch.ukstjamesthegreat.southwark.sch.uk/.../2020/05/...1.docx  · Web viewMonday. Tuesday. Wednesday. Thursday. Friday. Feelings . Calendar . English. Phonics

I went for a walk today and I saw this sign:

It said

The problem is there is something missing from this sign. Do you know what is missing? That’s right! The moon needs to be described! So, today you are going to create your own poster which includes a description of the moon. There is an example of a poster below. First, have a look at the building blocks below. When describing an object (the moon) you need to pick one from each row. Here is my example:

Description The cruellest thing has happened. The moon has disappeared! It is large and white. If you return it I will give you a hug!If found, please return to: Ms Reyes (you write your name)

Building Blocks for Description

LOST MOON HAVE YOU SEEN IT?

It looks a bit like this___________

English Lesson 3 20th May2020Learning Intention: To predict what might happen on the basis of what has been read so far To use the conjunction because Success Criteria: I can predict what might happen next I can use because to explain or reason

I have been thinking about the missing moon and I think I know what has happened! I found this book called 'Sidney, Stella and the Moon'

Description

Page 10: stjamesthegreat.southwark.sch.ukstjamesthegreat.southwark.sch.uk/.../2020/05/...1.docx  · Web viewMonday. Tuesday. Wednesday. Thursday. Friday. Feelings . Calendar . English. Phonics

Click on the link below to listen to the story:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BDiTjg0YpEg

Have a look at the picture above. What shapes can you see in the sky? Do you know what are these called? We call these constellations. See example below:

Page 11: stjamesthegreat.southwark.sch.ukstjamesthegreat.southwark.sch.uk/.../2020/05/...1.docx  · Web viewMonday. Tuesday. Wednesday. Thursday. Friday. Feelings . Calendar . English. Phonics

Now have a look at the picture on the left. It contains speech bubbles. Who do you think is saying these things?

In the story the children, Sidney and Stella, find it hard to share. Do you ever find it hard to share? Who have you found it hard to share with? You can talk to someone at home about this. In the story 'They had to find a new moon'. How could we find a new moon? What is the moon made of?

Activity Write about how you would find a new moon. Use the sentence starters below. Say your sentences out loud to someone at home before writing. Make sure you use the word because!

Here is my example (do not copy it!):

I would make a new moon out of cheese because it has holes. If someone was to land on a moon made of cheese they would sink because it is so soft.

Page 12: stjamesthegreat.southwark.sch.ukstjamesthegreat.southwark.sch.uk/.../2020/05/...1.docx  · Web viewMonday. Tuesday. Wednesday. Thursday. Friday. Feelings . Calendar . English. Phonics

I would make a new moon out of___________ because____________. If someone were to land on a moon made of _____, they would__________ because__________.

Finally, practise spelling the word because. You can use this to help you to help remember the spelling: big elephants can always understand small elephants English Lesson 4 21st May2020Learning Intention: To use a question mark at the end of a question

Success Criteria: I can use a question mark in the right place

Did you know that years ago, people believed the moon was made of cheese?

Click on the link below to listen to the story:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BDiTjg0YpEg

This morning I found these questions:

How can you travel to the moon? What does it feel like to be on the moon? Why do you need a spacesuit on the moon? What does the moon look like when you are up there? Who do you think wrote them? I think it might have been Sidney and Stella! Now it’s your turn to write your own questions! Use the Talk to the Hand

(below) to create questions for who, what, where, when for what you would like to find out about the moon if you were reading an information

Page 13: stjamesthegreat.southwark.sch.ukstjamesthegreat.southwark.sch.uk/.../2020/05/...1.docx  · Web viewMonday. Tuesday. Wednesday. Thursday. Friday. Feelings . Calendar . English. Phonics

book. Make sure that you place the question mark in the correct place!

English Lesson 5 22nd May2020Learning Intention: To identify the correct homophones (or near homophone) in context (A homophone is a word that is pronounced the same as another word but differs in meaning. A homophone may also differ in spelling. The two words may be spelled the same, such as rose and rose, or differently, such as carat, and carrot, or to, two, and too)

Success Criteria: I can choose the right spelling for the sentence

HomophonesWhat is a homophone?A homophone is a word which sounds like another word but has a different meaning. For example; there and their. Have a look at the words below. If you can print them, cut them up or copy them and cut up. Then match the words to their partners (the words that sound the same). Highlighting Homophones

too to quiet quite

hear here there their

Page 14: stjamesthegreat.southwark.sch.ukstjamesthegreat.southwark.sch.uk/.../2020/05/...1.docx  · Web viewMonday. Tuesday. Wednesday. Thursday. Friday. Feelings . Calendar . English. Phonics

one won see sea

night knight sun son

there they’re be bee

blue blew

Now you have paired up the words that sound the same, what is the difference in spelling? Remember, homophones are words that sound the same but that are spelled differently. Homophone Hunt. Ask someone at home to read the sentences below to you. Have with you the cut up words that you used earlier. While they are reading select and hold up the correct word.

It is too quiet on the moon; you can’t hear a thing. There is only one moon that we can see. We can see the night when the sun goes down. Although, it looks dark there, the sky will still be blue at night time.

Writing

Page 15: stjamesthegreat.southwark.sch.ukstjamesthegreat.southwark.sch.uk/.../2020/05/...1.docx  · Web viewMonday. Tuesday. Wednesday. Thursday. Friday. Feelings . Calendar . English. Phonics

Now use the cut up words to create your own sentences about the moon. You need to write ‘expertly’ and in a ‘grown up’ or ‘formal’ voice and try to use the word ‘because’. Here is my example below:

We see the moon at night because it reflects the sun.

Finally, write down any other homophones or near homophones that you can think of.

RE Reconciliation Tuesday 19th May 2020

Recognise that we need forgiveness.

Can you remember the last RE lesson about God’s promise? When we need help God answers, ‘Here I am’.

Page 16: stjamesthegreat.southwark.sch.ukstjamesthegreat.southwark.sch.uk/.../2020/05/...1.docx  · Web viewMonday. Tuesday. Wednesday. Thursday. Friday. Feelings . Calendar . English. Phonics

Have a think about the words ‘sorry’ and ‘forgive’. Talk to someone at home about what they mean. These are more than just words- we need to mean what we say. It might take a little time before we understand that what we have done has made others and ourselves unhappy.

Page 17: stjamesthegreat.southwark.sch.ukstjamesthegreat.southwark.sch.uk/.../2020/05/...1.docx  · Web viewMonday. Tuesday. Wednesday. Thursday. Friday. Feelings . Calendar . English. Phonics

It is good at the end of the day to stop and think about what has happened during the day.

Have a look at the picture above and answer the questions below.

Questions to discuss with a parent:

1) What are the children thinking about?2) Who is thinking about a happy time and who is thinking of a wrong

choice? 3) Who should the children say sorry to? (Look at the picture for clues.) 4) Why is bedtime a good time to think about what has happened during

the day? 5) What do you think we should say to God about the happy times we have

had?6) What should we say about the unhappy times? 7) Can you think of a prayer the children might say?

RE Reconciliation Friday 22nd May 2020

Make a card in the shape of a thought bubble:

Write the word ‘Sorry!’ on one side and ‘Thank you!’ on the other. Keep it under your pillow. When you go to bed, think about the good things that have happened and say, ‘Thank you!’ to God for them. Then think about the wrong choices you have made and say ‘Sorry!’

Bert is back to help you build some difficult words, but first he needs to check that you have remembered the word building skills that he taught you last week. Have a look at Bert’s bricks below. Each brick has a different letter on it but when you put them together they make a word! Sound out each letter and read the word.

Is this word a real or a nonsense word?

How about the words below? Read them and see.

Page 36: stjamesthegreat.southwark.sch.ukstjamesthegreat.southwark.sch.uk/.../2020/05/...1.docx  · Web viewMonday. Tuesday. Wednesday. Thursday. Friday. Feelings . Calendar . English. Phonics

Can you remember how to use a number line to add? We have done this in class. Click on the link below to remind yourself: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tp9n4kMTuQo

Remember, when we are using a number line to add we jump forwards

It is helpful to start at the biggest number. For example, look at this calculation: 2 + 7 =

Page 37: stjamesthegreat.southwark.sch.ukstjamesthegreat.southwark.sch.uk/.../2020/05/...1.docx  · Web viewMonday. Tuesday. Wednesday. Thursday. Friday. Feelings . Calendar . English. Phonics

If we start at 2 we will have to do 7 jumps. However, if we start at 7 we only have to do 2.

Now complete the activities below:
