6:50: Story: How Fly Saved the River LorikeetAn Ojibway (Chippawah) legend from Eastern Canada. Pictures to use. Many, many years ago when the world was new, there was a beautiful river. Fish in great numbers lived in this river, and its water was so pure and sweet that all the animals came there to drink. A giant moose heard about the river and he too came there to drink. But he was so big, and he drank so much, that soon the water began to sink lower and lower. The beavers were worried. The water around their lodges was disappearing. Soon their homes would be destroyed. The muskrats were worried, too. What would they do if the water vanished? How could they live? The fish were very worried. The other animals could live on land if the water dried up, but they couldn't. All the animals tried to think of a way to drive the moose from the river, but he was so big that they were too afraid to try. Even the bear was afraid of him. At last the fly said he would try to drive the moose away. All the animals laughed and jeered. How could a tiny fly frighten a giant moose? The fly said nothing, but that day, as soon as the moose appeared, he went into action. He landed on the moose's foreleg and bit sharply. The moose stamped his foot harder, and each time he stamped, the ground sank and the water rushed in to fill it up. Then the fly jumped about all over the moose, biting and biting and biting until the moose was in a frenzy. He dashed madly about the banks of the river, shaking his head, stamping his feet, snorting and blowing, but he couldn't get rid of that pesky fly. At last the moose fled from the river, and didn't come back. The fly was very proud of his achievement, and boasted to the other animals, "Even the small can fight the strong if they use their brains to think."6:55 CLOSING CEREMONY:

Story : Indian Hunter Interactive Story Preparation: Divide your group into eight. It will help if you pre-make signs with the character on them. Assign each group a character. Have them rehearse their parts once. As each character is mentioned, the group stands up and shouts out the proper response and sits down quickly.

Chief 'Me empty' Brave 'ki-yi' Pony 'clip-clop, clip-clop' Bow and arrow 'swiiissshh ' Fire 'crackle, crackle' Tom-tom 'boom, boom' North wind 'whoooo, whoooo' Deer 'scitter, scatter'

Now tell the story….Many moons ago in the land of the Plains Indians -the tribes of the Pawnee, Arapaho, Cheyenne and Kiowa -there was a village in trouble. For many days no rain had fallen, and crops were drying up. The buffalo and the DEER had gone north to seek better waterholes. Their very existence depended on securing fresh meat. The CHIEF called a conference of all the male members of the village. They all gathered around the FIRE as the TOM TOM sounded the call. When all were present the CHIEF looked around the circle. It was complete, even to his own son, a BRAVE of just 19 harvests. They discussed their problem until the FIRE dwindled to smoky red ashes. Finally, the BRAVE stood up and said that the only way was for a true-blooded member to go far off where the DEER were grazing and return with food. He himself would go. Early the next morning, the BRAVE took his BOW & ARROW and mounted his PONY. As the TOM TOM sounded, the BRAVE rode off on his PONY into the NORTH WIND. Onward the trail led the BRAVE and the PONY was getting weak. The NORTH WIND howled with glee. Finally he came upon a small water hole. There, drinking, were two fine DEER. The BRAVE tethered his PONY, aimed his BOW & ARROW and let fly two direct hits. The BRAVE started back to the village with the two DEER strapped to his PONY. Southward they trod and the NORTH WIND helped them along. Despite his great hunger, the BRAVE ate sparingly, for he knew his people were depending on him. Finally he met a scout from the village. The Indian sounded his TOM TOM signalling to the CHIEF and the people that the BRAVE and his PONY had returned. That night there was great rejoicing as the tribe gathered around the FIRE, each eating a welcome slice of DEER. The BRAVE told his story to the CHIEF and the people. The story of his PONY and his BOW & ARROW is re-lived today in Indian dance legend to the sound of the TOM TOM.

Game: Hunters and Horses Equipment: Nil Method: Divide JSs into two groups. Have the first group form a large circle facing toward the centre and then kneel down on all fours. These are the horses. The 2nd group then choose a mount and stand straddling their horse (must stand over and not sit on their horse, for safety reasons). Leader will call one of two commands "HORSES" or "HUNTERS". If "HORSES" is called the horse backs out from under its rider to run in a clockwise direction around the whole circle and back under the hunters legs. If "HUNTERS" is called , the hunter dismounts and runs in an anticlockwise direction around the outside of the circle. Give the Joey Scouts opportunity to be both horse and hunter.

Game: Cowboys and Indians Equipment: 1 blindfold per player; short ropes; scarves Preparation: The Indians team have a piece of rope tied around their right

forearm. The Cowboys have a scarf tied around their right forearm.

Method: Divide the Joeys into 2 teams and mark as above. Everyone wears a blindfold. Joeys start at opposite ends of the room. With blindfolds on, Joeys creep on hands and knees as silently as possible to the opposite end. If two meet, they silently feel the arm to identify them. Let your own side go, but “scalp” an opponent by snatching the blindfold off their head.

Game: Joey Three Legged Race. Equipment: long lengths of material strips Method: Divide Joeys into groups of 2. Tie ankles with material strips. JSs try to walk a set distance co-operating and working together as a team then have a mob race.Game: Plate of Feathers Equipment: Paper plate and feathers Method: A relay game in their teams, JS s must get to the other end of the hall without losing their feathers off the plate if they do they must stop and pick them up and go back 2 steps and do an Indian war dance before continuing. Pass to the next JS.

6:45: Game: Rain Dance Equipment: Nil Method: JSs form a very large circle with one appointed Chief in the middle. Secretly one JS has been chosen to set the dance step, which they can change at any time, the other JSs follow the dance without drawing attention to the JS who is making the changes. The Chief must try to guess who is responsible. You can limit the amount of guesses to ensure the game flows better.
