Learning doesn’t stop when you leave the classroom. The world around us is full of fantastic stories of awe and wonder – you only have to know where to look! This booklet is designed to point you in the direction of some of these things, and to help you really think about them. The following pages are full of examples of music, books, artworks, documentaries, and iconic sporting moments that you can listen to, read, watch or look at. You should complete the following tasks for each piece, in any order you choose:

1. There are a set of questions that you can answer for any of the pieces you choose. You don’t need to know anything about them beforehand, and by answering the questions you will develop an appreciation for culture, creativity and the arts, as well as developing your literacy skills.

2. To challenge yourself even further, why don’t you develop your oracy skills by discussing what you have discovered with someone at home? Could you go a step further and write a short speech about your chosen pieces? Why not record this and share it with your classmates or your teachers?

3. And why stop at the things in this booklet? You can use this as the basis to explore the world around you, and use the same questions to help you think about some of the things you find out about for yourself.

Iconic Sporting Moments

Miss Lancashire: My sporting highlight was the 1988 Seoul Olympics when Flo-Jo won the 100m sprint. I was mesmerised by her, she was the first female athlete that I had seen that broke all of the stereotypes of women in sport whilst being insanely talented!https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HqOCiq2vD8M

Mrs Walshaw: Ben Stokes in the 2019 ashes at Headingley.  Stokes was joined by the last man Jack Leach with 72 runs still needed. I watched the day prior to this live at Headingley and Ben Stokes was also had such grit and determination during the whole day prior and I remember saying to my friend if there is one player in this team who will win it for us it will be Ben Stokes. The following day his resilience and determination was amazing. He has such a spirit and brought the whole of the Headingley crowd behind him.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dtCS0WGZH4k

Miss Holmes: My favourite sporting moment was quite recently. At the ICU Worlds Cheerleading in April 2019. Where my sister represented England and came 8th in the world. Apart from the the performance and the results, the most memorable part for me was the opening ceremony where all countries came together, sang national anthems and all exchanged souvenirs to other competitors from other countries.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zthxOlpCTcghttps://m.youtube.com/watch?v=8smlG88uCDY

Mr Lawal: The most influential sporting highlight that I have watched live was when Lebron James won his first championship in Miami June 2012 - he is a couple of years older than me, and I had watched him play in high school, followed him for the next 9 years as he grew in the NBA, but failed to win the title until then. To see it finally happen after all those years showed how important hard work and determination is. He won a 2nd in Miami, before going back to his home town and bringing a championship to Cleveland a couple of years later. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vf5sDIS6L5Y

My most influential sporting highlight from the history books is the 1936 Berlin Olympics, where Jesse Owens won 4 gold medals against the Nazi ideal of white supremacy. He had a great friendship with the white German Karl Ludwig, defying what those hosting the games stood for. It highlighted the power of sport, and how irrelevant race was in comparison to what the Nazi's believed.

Mrs Lawal:

The greatest sporting moment for me would be the 1992 Olympics. It’s the first big sporting event I can remember and I think it’s what made me love sport so much.

I didn’t really understand it all and don’t remember lots of details as I was only 5 but I remember the way it made me feel. I remember loving the theme tune that came on every time the coverage started on the BBC (Barcelona" – Freddie Mercury and Montserrat Caballé) and remember this great feeling of positivity, hope and pride everyone had watching people like Linford Christie and Sally Gunnell win gold and Derek Redmond completing his race with the help of his Dad carrying him across the line after his injury. It showed me that sport can make you feel great and has real power to bring people together.

Mr Sykes:

The GB Men winning the 4x100m at the 2017 World Championships: The whole build-up before the race had been focussed on Usain Bolt as it was his final race as a professional before he retired & it was predicted to be a Jamacia win but the under-dogs did it with all pieces of the puzzle coming together perfectly! (Still gives me goosebumps watching it now)

David Beckham free kick v Greece: This is the first memory I have of watching something on TV and saying "I want to do that" and consequently going out onto the park behind my house and (trying to) re-create the free-kick over and over again.
