Start by talking about what you think ‘ridiculous’ might mean.
This may be new vocabulary or they may be able to relate it to something that they have heard
in the past.Next share the story ‘Ridiculous’
by Michael Colemanhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?
v=QdL0O6ulAm8Once you have read the story together - Discuss what happened?Who did the Tortoise meet? What was the weather like in the story? Why do you think the story is called Ridiculous? How do you think the Tortoise feels now she is snuggled up ready to sleep?
In the story Shelley feels lots of different emotions.
Can you remember our emotions? Think about the story we share in
school when Panda loses his favourite peanut butter jar.
Can you listen for the different emotions in the story. Shelley feels happy when she sneaks out of the
shed.Shelley feels cross when the duck
laughs at her.Get a mirror to look in and show the different emotions using your
face. Use the mirror to draw Mrs Arnold
a picture of you with different emotions.
Draw a happy face, draw a sad face. Can you copy the letters in
the word sad or overwrite the letters for happy, sad – ask an
adult to help you.
sad
How many animals does Shelley meet in the story? Can you count them all?
How many animals are there? Can you write each
number, think about what each number looks like.
Ask an adult to help you to write each number
1,2,3,4,5
Can you think of any number songs? Think of the
songs that we sing in Nursery.
Here are some ideas to help you.
1,2,3,4,5 once I caught a fish alive.
Five Little ducks went swimming one day
Five Little Speckled FrogsFive Little Monkeys

When Shelley went out she needed a warm coat to wear.
Can you design a warm coat for Shelley to wear.
What will your coat look like? What colour will it be?
Will it be lots of different colours?
What else should Shelley wear if she was going out in the
cold? Can you think of all the thigs
she should wear.
Hibernation What does hibernation
mean?Hibernation is when
some animals have long periods of deep sleep
during cold weather. To help them
prepare, hibernating animals eat lots of food during the fall so they can survive
the cold and dangerous winter. Their metabolism, or the rate the body burns calories, also slows down
to save energy.
Can you find out what other animals like to
hibernate? Can you draw me a picture
of the animals that you have found out like to
hibernate?
Little Gems

Can you make a tortoiseYou could draw a tortoise from the picture from the book. Or have a look at the template
attached to decorate the tortoise by using coloured paper to stick
to her shell or use your colours to colour her in.
Feeling Emotions through Music
Music is really powerful and can be full of emotions. Listening together will help children think about their
feelings and share them.Listen to some pieces of music together to explore emotions
together. Share with Mrs Arnold some songs
that you have liked, favourite songs or sad songs.
If you have some musical instruments – can you use the
instruments to explore the music in the songs.
Expressive ArtChoose your favourite character from the story. Can you draw Mrs Arnold a picture of them. You could choose the duck, the dog or the cat or maybe there is someone else that you would like to draw.Choose your medium – ie will you draw your picture, paint your picture or use sticky bits to glue and stick pieces to your favourite character from the story.Send a picture of your picture to Mrs Arnold.
Science Fill a bowl with cold water.Place outside before you go to bed. In the morning go out and have a look at the water. What has happened
to it?Is it still cold?
Is it warm?Has Jack frost been and
frozen the water?Discuss.
Share what happened to the water with Mrs Arnold.
Expressive ArtHealth and Wellbeing
Can you do some mindfulness?
Ask a grown up to put some relaxing music on
Below is an examplehttps://

v=WUXEeAXywCYWhilst the music is on,
sit on your bottom, cross your legs and fold your arms, then close
your eyes.Listen to the music and breathe in and out and relax. Do this for a few
minutes.Then visit cosmic kids

Using your building blocks, lego or anything you have at home
such as toys in your room or junk modelling cardboard boxes. Can
you make a bed for Shelley?Think about what she might need
in her bed and how you will make it for her to be safe while
she hibernates. What might Shelley need before she goes into hibernation – think
about food, water and somewhere warm to sleep.
Think about the box we saw at the start of the story
Can you draw Mrs Arnold a picture of the things she may
need and write down, using your pencil what they are.
Can you make a musical instrument?
Here are some ideas.
Use a wooden spoon- paint it using your favourite colors. Get some beads, some dried peas, pasta,
anything hard that you can attach to a piece of string. Attach the
bead etc to a piece of string each side and stick with cellotape.
Shake or roll the spoon in your hands to make a noise.
Make a straw harmonica. Using
straws, tape them together at the top. Ask an adult to cut the straws
on a diagonal. Blow down the starws to make a sound
Cereal box guitar – Get a cereal box and ask an adult to cut a hole in it on the front.Use a kitchen roll tube or piece of cardbaord to make the fret of the
guitar.Attach wool or string from the top of the fret to the bottom side of
Mums and DadsTalk about what has happened to the water. Extension to the
water experiment. Take a small toy – Put the toy in a food freezer bag, and fill the
bag with water.Place the bag in the freezer
overnight. In the morning, if frozen, take the toy in ice out of the bag
and place in a bowl.I usually do this in school
without the children seeing so that it appears in the morning. They love to explore and find
out what happened – you could tell a story about how you
found it on the doorstep. You can then discuss how to get the toy out of the ice – talk about
melting, defrosting, where you could put the toy in ice. Whilst
supervising you could add warm water to the toy in ice,
the children really enjoy exploring and talking about it.Take lots of pictures and share your observations and pictures with Mrs Arnold. Make it as fun
as possible
You could even use a tortoise and explain how Shelley got frozen.
Can you do 5 star jumps? Can you count each star
jump?Can you touch your toes
five times? Can you count each time
you touch your toes? Can you hop on one foot? Now hop on the other foot. How many jumps can you do? Try jumping on two feet, can you count your
jumps? What else can you do?Send a picture to Mrs
Arnold.
the circle.Enjoy playing your guitar
Make a toilet roll rain stick. Get a toilet roll, fill it with beads, dried peas, anyhting small, round. Cut
cardboard or paper circles to stick on one end, Pour the beads etc
inside then seal the other end with a piece of paper or card.
Shake from side to side, up and down.
