Dancing Cranesby Caroline Arnold

It is early morning. Two tall birds stand in a field. They are a pair of Sandhill Cranes. They have long legs, large bodies, thin necks, and long, pointed bills. Their feathers are gray except for white on the cheeks and a red spot on the head. Sandhill Cranes stand about three and one-half feet high. They are about as tall as someone your age.    Dancing Time    The cranes turn and face one another. One bird bows its head. The other bird bows its head, too. Then both of them lift their heads and spread their wide wings. The cranes bend their legs and jump high into the air. They look as if they are dancing. After landing, the birds bow and flap and jump again. They do this over and over.       Sandhill Cranes live in the United States and Canada. They are famous for their springtime dances. This is how they tell one another that it is time for nesting. Nesting Time    Sandhill Cranes build a nest with sticks and leaves. The mother bird lays two spotted eggs in it. The cranes take turns sitting upon them and keeping them warm. The eggs hatch a month later. The baby birds are called chicks. The parents keep their chicks safe and show them how to find food. Sandhill Cranes mostly eat plants. Sometimes they eat insects or other small animals. Flying Time     The young cranes grow quickly. They are strong enough to fly when they are about three months old. Then all the Sandhill Cranes fly south for the winter. They will fly back to their nesting areas the next spring. Then they will bow and flap and jump again. It will be dancing time for Sandhill Cranes.

How Books Are Made

by Claudia Cangilla McAdam Do you like books? Do you wonder how they are made? It can take a long time for a story to become a book. The IdeaFirst, a writer gets an idea. She puts her story down on paper. That might be hard to do. She needs to choose just the right words. She looks things up. She wants to make sure that what she says is right. At last, she is happy with her story. She puts it in the mail. The story is on its way to people who make books. The writer hopes they buy her story.

The Story Is Bought, and the Art Is MadeThe people who make books like the story! They tell the writer that they will buy her story. Next, they find someone to draw pictures for the book. Sometimes it is the writer who draws the pictures. Many times it is someone else who is the artist. The artist has his own ideas about what the book should look like. He draws his pictures. Then he makes a handmade book. In it, he puts the words and pictures together. This way, he has an idea about how the book will look.

Becoming a BookThe people who make the book sometimes make changes. They make sure the words are right. They make sure the pictures look good. At last, they are ready to send the book to be printed. The book goes to the printer. The printer can make many copies of the book. Big machines print the pages. Then the pages are put together. Another machine makes the hard covers. Next, the covers and the pages are put together. The books are done!

The books go to stores. They go to libraries. They may even end up in your book bag.

Try Some Fry Breadby Marilyn Sklar    William and Jake ran through the back door into the house. William’s mother was cooking something on the stove. The smell made Jake stop and look.    “What are you cooking?” Jake asked.    “I’m making fry bread,” said William’s mother. “Would you like some?”    “Um, no, thank you. I like only white bread from the store,” answered Jake.    “Come on, Jake,” said William. “Let’s go play.”       Off they ran.    Later, William said, “I’m hungry. Let’s go find something to eat.”    “Okay,” Jake said. “Just don’t make me eat fry bread.”    William’s mother was still in the kitchen. “Hi, boys. What are you up to?” she asked.    “We’re hungry,” answered William.    “There is fresh fry bread in that bag. You may have a piece of that,” William’s mother offered.    William opened the bag, took out two pieces, and put them on a plate. He offered one piece to Jake and said, “Try some fry bread. It’s good.”

Jake looked at it and sighed. He broke off a tiny piece and put it in his mouth. It didn’t taste bad. He chewed and swallowed. He waited a few seconds and took another small bite.    “Hey, this is okay.” Jake stuffed a big bite into his mouth.    William said, “My mom makes this bread every week. Fry bread is an old Native American food. Many Native Americans eat fry bread. I like it with butter and honey. My dad likes to dunk it in
