TEXT A

HOW MUSIC SAVED MY LIFEBy Tom Smith

1 On March 26, 2015, my 19-year-old brother decided to take his own life. His death seemed to come out of nowhere, and it left my family in an understandable state of shock. In trying to process Preston’s death, my emotions were wide-ranging and profound: anger, denial, sadness along with confusion, guilt, helplessness and so many other emotions I hadn’t experienced in this intense way before. 5

2 Despite these feelings, I “held it together well” according to my closest companions—a statement meant to be complimentary. I continued being productive, active in my work and creative communities, attempting to maintain social relationships. The more I did this, the more I felt a sense of pride for pushing through. And maybe, most importantly, it allowed me to ignore the chaos of my piercing, traumatic emotions.

10

3 A few months after Preston’s death, I flew home to be with family and share a sacred space of grief that only we could understand. Sitting on the plane heading homeward, I felt an overwhelming relief come over me. On the flight, I was anonymous, unknown. I could cry as much as I needed without talking about Preston, my family or myself, not ever having to answer the fateful question: “Are you okay?”

15

4 And as much as this experience offered relief, it was also the first time I realized something within me was very, very wrong. The dam wouldn’t hold much longer. Unbeknownst to my conscious self, I was breaking.

20

5 I’d been working as a music therapist for several years when Preston passed away. My clients used music to help them process traumatic events. Music helped them to control how memories and triggers affected them. I saw how music created healthy communication techniques where there weren’t any. Considering my music therapy experiences, I decided to write music as an expressive outlet for my grief and feelings of post-traumatic stress disorder and suicidal depression.

25

6 Writing my song, “Big Steel Wings,” was the first time I admitted on paper to the universe that I was drowning; that whatever sense of safety and control I had over my body, my emotions and my mind were failing quickly. I wasn’t sure how I was going to get better. I turned to song writing to navigate the murky, deep waters of my depression and grief. There was no such thing as a “wrong” lyric or chord combination. When I felt numb, rhythms and chords helped me feel something again. When words weren’t working, I could sing.

7 Just listening to music or experiencing it live has helped me through some of my greatest struggles in life—but this time, I am certain music saved my life. When I finally admitted to myself that I wasn’t okay, writing music gave me the confidence that someone, somewhere, felt exactly as I did. It was okay to not be okay, but it was also important to search for ways to bring light to my darkness.

40

8 Shortly after writing “Big Steel Wings,” I began to seek help from sources outside of myself. It was writing that song that made me realize I couldn’t “fix” myself alone. I sought out therapy, grief support, spiritual counselling and healthy peer systems. I threw myself into the abundant music community in New Orleans and forced myself to start playing live again, after a too-long hiatus.

45

9 As cathartic as music was for me to write, I wanted to ensure I was sharing my songs with others for their healing. If music could help me feel a little hope and a little less pain, maybe it could do the same for others. That is the power of music, isn’t it?

TEXT C

QUALITIES OF PEOPLE WHO ARE HIGHLY RESPECTEDby Jacqueline Whitmore

Here are some tips for earning more respect.

Always be polite to everyone you meet during the day. Give others the same respect you’d like to receive yourself. Seek out actions you can take to offer politeness. Open the door for the person behind you or let the person with one item go ahead of you in the grocery store.

Eliminate disrespectful behaviours such as rolling your eyes, interrupting or talking negatively about someone. Listening is an active process. Think before you speak. Most often in today’s conversations, one person’s comments “trigger” thoughts in the listener, who then brings forth their own story along the same lines. Instead of telling your tale, ask questions that encourage the speaker to tell you more.

People earn respect by always being ready to lend a hand or an ear whenever they’re needed or notice an opportunity to help. Look for opportunities to help that you might have previously overlooked.

Page 6: online.htseden.co.za  · Web viewINSTRUCTIONS AND INFORMATION. 1.This question paper consists of THREE sections: SECTION A: Comprehension(30 marks) SECTION B: Summary(10 marks) SECTION

Your actions are based on your choices, and except for an unforeseen circumstance, there is no reason for excuses. Own your actions. For example, if you’re constantly late, don’t make lame excuses. Own up to your mistakes and instead of dwelling on them, look for opportunities to move past them and do better next time.

Holding on to anger or a grudge doesn’t hurt anyone but yourself. If you get upset, allow yourself to be angry momentarily, then move on and either rectify the situation or put it behind you.

Being stubborn won’t get you anywhere. Make an effort to grow as a person; learn new skills, try new activities, and especially, re-examine your automatic behaviours. And don’t forget to congratulate yourself on progress you make along the way to becoming a better person.

Different ways people greet each other around the world.

1 Tibetan monks stick their tongues out to greet people. They also press their hands together and place them in front of their chests to show that they “come in peace”.

2 In the Philippines, one greets one’s elders by gently taking one of their hands and pressing it against one’s forehead. They call this gesture “Mano” (which means “hand” in Spanish) and it is used to show respect.

3 People greet each other with a bow in Japan. The problem is that their bows differ in angle and duration, depending on the person they’re greeting. Some bows last a lifetime while others are quick and subtle This confuses everyone.

4 In Oman, men often greet each other by pressing their noses together.

5 The traditional greeting in Tuvalu is to press cheeks together and simultaneously inhail.

6 If you’re lucky enough to witness the unique welcome greeting of the Maasai people, you’re in for a treat! The tribe warriors perform an elaborate jumping dance.
