Independent Novel Study Learning Intentions: To learn to effectively display and communicate your understanding of the novel’s theme, plot, and connotations. Theme is the author’s message about people and/or society. It is a lesson that the reader should take away from the book; it goes beyond the text and relates to our world. The theme of the novel is often developed through the protagonist. Looking at the character’s traits, how the character changes or develops or evolves throughout the novel, and how the protagonist overcomes conflict will help you determine the theme of your novel. Task: There are many all-encompassing parts to this assignment: 1. Write a descriptive and critical character description in 3+ paragraphs. Although this is your opinion of the character, you must use specific events from your novel to support your thoughts. Things you may want to talk about: a. The character traits you admire / hate b. How has the character changed and grown throughout the book c. Has your opinion of the character changed while reading the book? d. What lesson did the character learn? e. Is the character relatable to you or to someone you know? f. Is your protagonist a hero or a tragic character?

Independent Novel Study

Learning Intentions: To learn to effectively display and communicate your understanding of the novel’s theme, plot, and connotations.

Theme is the author’s message about people and/or society. It is a lesson that the reader should take away from the book; it goes beyond the text and relates to our world. The theme of the novel is often developed through the protagonist. Looking at the character’s traits, how the character changes or develops or evolves throughout the novel, and how the protagonist overcomes conflict will help you determine the theme of your novel.

2. You must create a colourful and detailed plot diagram that clearly defines all major points of plot.

3. You must create a strong theme statement for your novel. Support your theme statement with evidence from the story. The evidence may be direct quotes, paraphrases, or brief summaries of events. You need at least three strong supporting phrases for your theme.

4. You must present all of this information to your class. How you present this information is up to you: powerpoint, prezi, video, etc.

5. You must create a kahoot quiz based on the information that you presented.
