Chuck Close Inspired Painting

Using your previous experience with grid systems, your final task is to create a Chuck Close inspired painting of your favourite Christmas character. You must complete your character in a chosen colour scheme of your choice.

Step 1: Choose your Christmas character and email it to Miss. Stewart to print out. Your character’s image must have evidence of value and form. Email: [email protected]

Step 2: Use the grid system to enlarge the image on watercolour paper (get from Miss. Stewart). LIGHTLY DRAW THE GRID ON.

Step 3: Once you have drawn your image, erase the grid leaving the contour line drawing of your image behind.

Step 4: Draw a new grid on top of your contour drawing. This time, your grid has to be diagonal.

Step 5: Begin drawing circular patterns inside each of the grid boxes.

Step 6: Choose a colour scheme to paint your Christmas character in

Step 7: Begin painting. Remember to focus on value – if there is varying shades in your box, then use the colour and create tints, shades and tones of it. See the examples below.
