Take a look at the example below in relation to presents. On the left, the number of presents were not shared equally so all the children got different amounts Molly got 4, Oisín 7 etc.
On the right, the same number of presents were shared equally between all the children so they each child got the exact same number of presents – 5.
Some people find the concept of average a funny one to understand. If you think of doing your grocery shopping – some weeks you might spend €105, some weeks €90 and some weeks €120. If you add up the 3 amounts you will get €315, divide this by 3 and you are looking at on average €105 per shopping trip. Sometimes, we buy extra items like washing powder or dishwasher tablets – you wouldn’t buy these items every week & they increase the amount of your bill when you do buy them.
Averaging can be very useful for us as households to manage our money. They are useful for businesses to help them plan for costs like wages, electricity, staffing arrangements etc. Remember for averaging: you add all the amounts and divide by the number of items/days/weeks/animals/people etc. Try these two questions.
