Chapter 1. Before You Begin

What is ViRobot Management Server?

Part A: VMS Overview

ViRobot Management Server (VMS) is a centralized anti-virus management solution

for corporate network environments. VMS allows administrators’ to configure,

monitor and maintain a comprehensive enterprise anti-virus protection system from a

single management console. Additionally, it includes useful administrative tools such

as remote virus scan, virus report, sending files and messages, Hardware/Software

Inventory, remote client control, and client shared-folder management to monitor

possible virus attack paths.

A VMS system consists of three main components, namely a VMS SiteServer,

Management Console, and VMS SiteClient. These components can be installed on a

main server, located at the top of the company network. The main server

automatically checks and retrieves the latest virus signatures and engine updates from

Hauri’s update server. Once VMS SiteClient is installed on the client system, it will

connect to the main server over a specified time interval and download the update

files from the main server. A large corporation network can have a single or multiples

sub-servers that will connect and download updates from the main server. VMS

SiteClient can be connected directly to the sub-server to obtain updates. This

configuration reduces network loads on the main server. Figure 1.1 shows a basic

VMS’s structure in a corporation.

Chapter 1. VMS OVERVIEW

10

Page 11: nodownloads.pcsecurityshield.com/manuals/vms_manual… · Web viewIf VMS software is installed on the server, it is necessary to uninstall the older versions of VMS. In addition,

Figure 1.1 An Example of VMS’s Structure

Part B: VMS SiteServer

The VMS SiteServer daemon runs 24 hours a day to provide virus protection

services, gathers virus reports, and additional updated information from sub-servers

and VMS clients. Once VMS SiteServer daemon has been installed, the

administrator will see a SiteServer icon on the bottom tray, as shown in Figure 1-2.

Figure 1-2. SiteServer Icon

Part C: VMS Manager Console

The Manager Console provides various administrative tools such as remote virus

check, hardware and software inventory, along with client remote control. Based on

information collected by the SiteServer, the administrator can use the Manager

Console to display results in a more practical way. Figure 1-3 shows virus reports

from a group of VMS Clients through a pie chart.

Page 12: nodownloads.pcsecurityshield.com/manuals/vms_manual… · Web viewIf VMS software is installed on the server, it is necessary to uninstall the older versions of VMS. In addition,

Figure 1-3. Manager Console

Part D: VMS SiteClient

The SiteClient automatically checks for new updates from the VMS Main server and

installs them on the client PC. It also reports client information such as new infected files

and dynamic IP Address information to the SiteServer for centralized management. The

Main SiteClient Manager window is shown in Figure 1-4.

VMS Feature Highlights

Centralized Management

The administrator can manage and configure client PCs in the entire network

from a single console for virus protection. The group configuration feature

enables the administrator to perform mass configuration. The administrator can

also perform remote scanning.

Enhanced Automatic Update Function

The main server automatically checks and retrieves the latest virus signatures

from Hauri update servers. Sub-servers can obtain the updates from the main

server; and subsequently, clients can get the update files from the sub-server or

main server. Robust virus protection throughout the entire network ensures all

clients and servers are updated with the latest virus signatures and scanning

engines.

Network Traffic Minimization

The administrator can stagger connection time intervals to reduce network

traffics between VMS SiteClients and the main server for virus definition and

engine updates (to reduce network traffics). Hauri provides a module-based

update function with a size of less than 200KB to minimize heavy loads on the

network traffics.

Real-time Reports

ViRobot Management Server will provide detailed reports to assist in

understanding virus trends, and infection paths. The administrator can trace

virus infection source and infection time for the entire network.

Flexible and Scalable Configuration

Administrators can easily re-organize VMS clients into groups/departments at

anytime. The main server can support up to 1,500 clients; and sub-server can

13

Page 14: nodownloads.pcsecurityshield.com/manuals/vms_manual… · Web viewIf VMS software is installed on the server, it is necessary to uninstall the older versions of VMS. In addition,

support up to 1,000 VMS clients depending on the network bandwidth.

Powerful Desktop Management with Remote Control Feature

With the user’s permission, the administrator can gain full remote control over

client PC to perform remote technical support, add/remove programs, drag &

drop files between server and clients, and much more. VMS also includes a

powerful network based messaging solution to facilitate communication between

the administrator and VMS clients.

Figure 1-5. Remote Client Control

Asset Management Control

To ease IT Administrator burden, VMS has incorporated the Asset Management

Control feature into this enterprise anti-virus solution. The administrator can

retrieve hardware/software inventory and export results in various formats

including Excel spreadsheet.

Security Patch and Shared Folder Management

The administrator can easily view VMS clients’ latest security patch from the

VMS Manager Console. Moreover, the Shared Folder Management feature helps

administrators control unnecessary shared folders to prevent possible virus attack

paths.

This chapter contains step-by-step installation procedures of the Anti-Virus ViRobot

Management Server (VMS) software. The installation process includes three parts:

Removal of earlier version of VMS (if applicable), SiteServer installation, and SiteClient

installation.

Note: Remove any anti-virus software before installing VMS system

Part I: Uninstall earlier version of VMS

If VMS software is installed on the server, it is necessary to uninstall the older versions of

VMS. In addition, the user will have to uninstall any other antivirus software such as

Norton, McAfee, PC-cillin, etc, if it was previously installed. The SiteClient will be

uninstalled before the SiteServer. The following steps will lead users to successfully

uninstall an older version of VMS software. Go to Part II if VMS will be installed for the

first time to this computer.

1. Go to Control Panel and select “Add or Remove Programs” icon, and remove the

SiteClient. Enter “agentdown” for the password, and then click OK in the

Uninstall Confirm window as shown in Figure 2-1.
