Grade 9 Math April 15-21

We sure hope that your first week back with formal learning was engaging and not too frustrating. If you haven’t reached out to your teacher to say hello or stopped into a zoom office hour, we encourage you to do so.

Please ensure you read all of the information below before starting.

This week you will continue learning algebra, building on the concepts you learnt last week. Similar to last week there is a basic assignment, mandatory for all Math 9 students, and the ‘extending your learning’ opportunities are offered to those who want to go beyond the minimal requirements, and to practice and refine their skills to further prepare themselves for Math 10.

Learning Intentions:

● Students will be able to successfully combine groups of like variables● Students will use the distributive property to simplify and solve and equation● Students will be able to solve an equation which requires more than two steps

Assignment Instructions:

For students of Ms. Switzer and Mr. Livingstone

General Instructions: ● Students will follow the instruction and examples from Algebra - Grouping Like Terms Notes

and Algebra - Distributive Property Notes● Students may supplement their learning from the instruction and examples below● Students will complete a minimum of the odd exercises from each of Algebra - Grouping Like

Terms Practice Questions and Algebra - Distributive Property Practice Questions● Students will communicate their progress back to their teacher

Specific Instructions:Start by reviewing the Algebra - Grouping Like Terms Notes (pg. 4-5) and then complete a minimum of the odd practice questions from Algebra - Grouping Like Terms Practice Questions (pg. 6-7). Next review the Algebra - Distributive Property Notes (pg. 8-12), use the supplement instruction if you need it, and then complete a minimum of the odd practice questions from Algebra - Distributive Property Practice Questions (pg. 13-15). Do the even questions as well if you are willing and able.

Remember to always show your work so that the reader understands how you reached the answer you did. For this algebra unit here are some tips for solving questions:

1. Work vertically, recopying everything from the previous line, only changing one thing per line 2. If you do an operation to one side of the equation, you must do the same operation to the

other side of the equation as well 3. Do the operations to the entire side of the equation, not just one number on the side of the

equation 4. Do the inverse operations in the question in the order SADMEB5. Most importantly, always be working towards the goal of isolating the unknown by itself on

one side of the equation

Try the extending your learning questions if you can, it shows not just your math abilities but your work ethic.

For students of Ms. Barton:1) Scroll down to “Ms. Barton's Grade 9 Math April 15-21”

2) Follow through the notes and complete all the questions

Supplementary Instruction and Examples:Below are some great resources to show other examples of the concepts covered this week. Show your teacher evidence that you completed any of the suggested questions to get credit for completion.

Operations with integers: We can think about adding and subtracting positive and negative numbers in different ways: moving along a number line, positive and negative temperatures, amounts of money and debt.

1. What does it mean to have “like terms” anyways? Read this Khan Academy article on like terms and combining variables, and if you want to know more, see the menu of videos and activities along the left side of the page.

2. Read through this page on mathplanet, paying special attention to the video example at the bottom (https://www.mathplanet.com/education/algebra-1/exploring-real-numbers/ the-distributive-property).

3. Practice with the 3 problem sets on this page by Saddleback College (https://www.saddleback.edu/faculty/lperez/algebra2go/prealgebra/variables/distProp.html).

4. Try these questions from Khan Academy (see the video on that page as well for help on factoring out using the distributive property).(https://www.khanacademy.org/math/algebra-basics/alg-basics-algebraic-expressions/alg-basics-distributive-property/e/distributive-property-with-variables)

5. Read through the Lumin Learning page on clearing fractions out of algebraic equations and do the questions provided on that page (with pen and paper) and check answers. Click "try another question" until you are confident in your abilities.(https://courses.lumenlearning.com/prealgebra/chapter/solving-equations-with-fraction-coefficients/)

6. Watch this Khan Academy video on nested fractions. (https://www.khanacademy.org/math/algebra-basics/alg-basics-algebraic-expressions/alg-basics-nested-fractions/v/algebraic-expressions-with-fraction-division)

7. If you can do the associated practice here without any errors, you are doing great! (do these questions on pen and paper).(https://www.khanacademy.org/math/algebra-basics/alg-basics-algebraic-expressions/alg-basics-nested-fractions/e/nested-fractions?modal=1)

If you need or want assistance on the assignment provided below, we are offering ‘office hours’ using the platform ‘Zoom’ twice per week with one of the four Math teachers: Mr. Kyle Conne, Mr. Aaron Livingstone, Mrs. Soleil Switzer, and Mrs. Susan Barton. If you wish to speak directly with your Math 9 teacher, please do not hesitate to email them at any time and they will respond in a timely manner.

Office Hours: April 15 - 21 (via ZOOM):

Office hours are an optional, drop-in session that give students a chance to ask questions to a teacher, to interact and work with their peers, or just to stop in and say hi to a friend or teacher. There will be no set lessons for these times, but rather, we will be trying to help students with whatever they need help with.

Sometimes there are two different ways we can think about waterbombing:

-2( 2a – 4) = 20 -2( 2a – 4) = 20-2 x 2a – (-2) x 4 = 20 -2 x 2a and (-2) x (-4) = 20

-4a – (-8) = 20 -4a (+8) = 20-4a – (-8) + (-8) = 20 + (-8) -4a + 8 = 20 -4a = 12 -4a + 8 – 8 = 20 – 8 -4a / -4 = 12 / -4 -4a = 12 a = -3 -4a / -4 = 12 / -4

a = -3
