Genre Analysis

Horror – Annabelle

At the beginning of the video clip, we can see that a tracking shot is used to follow the girl as she goes downstairs. This is effective as it captures her expression as well as successfully builds tension. The director would’ve used this type of shot because as the camera is slightly above her, pointing down, it gives us the impression that she is small and makes her look inferior to whatever she is going to encounter, therefore creating drama and fear.

Comedy – We’re the Millers

In this clip, we can see that there have been a variety of different clips used. Firstly, we can see an extreme close up (ECU) to show expression as it emphasises the feeling of being shocked or startled which leaves the audience wondering what he has to hide. Also, the director uses an over the shoulder shot which is also wide. This is effective as the audience can see the conversation between them, but can also see other people’s reactions to the conversation.

Also, the director uses a low angled shot to show superiority between the dad and the children. This is effective as it captures their facial expressions and creates tension.

Iconography in a Fantasy/Drama

Edward Scissorhands

In this photo, taken from a clip from Edward Scissorhands, there is a lot of iconography used to show the setting/meaning of the story.

First of all, the cuts all over his face show that he is in pain and can build sympathy within an audience. Also, the use of a two shot highlights the lady’s expression which adds to the drama and fantasy of the genre. Moreover, this two shot shows how both people are complete opposites in terms of appearance and can therefore create tension as well as confusion.

His pale skin shows malnourishment and highlights the fact that he hasn’t been taking good care of himself, leaving the audience gripped and wondering what he has been through to make him look this way. This scene is shot in a typical American home with slightly low-key lighting to exaggerate his paleness, compared to the other lady.
