Shands Elementary Respect Lesson Plan Objective : We will show Respect and Kindness in our daily interactions at school. Framing the Lesson : We will understand the meaning of the word Respect. I will write on my journal (draw for the little ones) about how I can be respectful and kind in the common areas at school (students will pick from cafeteria, restrooms, hallways, arrival/dismissal holding areas, and outside at dismissal). Focus : Direct Teach : In a bubble map, brainstorm with the students what it means to be Respectful. Come up with a student friendly definition that will be posted on an anchor chart. (i.e.: To be Respectful means to treat everyone, including yourself, and everything like they have value). Add some pictures (see resources) to the concepts. Check for Understanding : -Pair or group students and have them turn and talk about a given scenario and about how they would handle the situation in a respectful manner. OR -Pair or roup students and have them act out a situation where they would be expected to show respect. *They need to be able to explain or demonstrate the meaning of respect and how they would show respect at school. Teacher should provide positive reinforcement for students who conduct themselves in a respectful manner. Guided Practice : Draw a T-Chart on the board, chart paper, or document camera. Ask students what respectful behaviors should Look Like and Sound

Shands Elementary Respect Lesson Plan

Objective:We will show Respect and Kindness in our daily interactions at school.

Framing the Lesson:We will understand the meaning of the word Respect.I will write on my journal (draw for the little ones) about how I can be respectful and kind in the common areas at school (students will pick from cafeteria, restrooms, hallways, arrival/dismissal holding areas, and outside at dismissal).

Focus:

Direct Teach:In a bubble map, brainstorm with the students what it means to be Respectful. Come up with a student friendly definition that will be posted on an anchor chart. (i.e.: To be Respectful means to treat everyone, including yourself, and everything like they have value). Add some pictures (see resources) to the concepts.

Check for Understanding:-Pair or group students and have them turn and talk about a given scenario and about how they would handle the situation in a respectful manner.

OR-Pair or roup students and have them act out a situation where they would be expected to show respect.

*They need to be able to explain or demonstrate the meaning of respect and how they would show respect at school. Teacher should provide positive reinforcement for students who conduct themselves in a respectful manner.

Guided Practice:Draw a T-Chart on the board, chart paper, or document camera. Ask students what respectful behaviors should Look Like and Sound Like. If negative or inappropriate comments are made, redirect them to positive ones.

Independent Practice:The students will write on their journals (draw for the little ones) about how they can be respectful and kind in the common areas at school.

Closure:The students will write on an index card with their names on them (or draw for the little ones), one thing they learned about being respectful and one thing they learned about being kind. They will have to meet with three people in the room they do not sit close to and share with them the two things learned. They will exchange cards, so the second and third time time they meet with somebody, they will have to say “So and so learned that…”
