U. S. Congressman James E. Clyburn (SC-6) House Assistant Democratic Leader will keynote this year’s bi-annual Christmas Gala on Saturday December 22, 2012. Festivities will be held the entire weekend of December 21-23 as we mark the 50th Anniversary of our school’s opening. Along with the many activities we’re planning, we will also offer discounts and have monetary drawings. Mark your calendar. Further information will follow as we finalize the planning.

February 15, 1946- October 21, 2011

Mrs. Hedy B. Foster is a 1963 graduate of C. A. Brown High School who wrote the school’s Alma Mater. A memorial service to celebrate her life was held on Thursday, October 27, 2011 in Charlotte, North Carolina. We will always remember you.

On Friday December 2, 2011 Charles A. Brown High Alumni Association held a historical moment as they crowned their first Alumni Queen. This memorable evening of elegance took place at the beautiful North Charleston Inn Ballroom. Ms. Claudette Coakley-Watkins is a 1974 graduate and has worked in the field of education for twenty-six years. Mrs. Ruth G. Coleman is a 1972 graduate and serves as Youth Director for New Tabernacle Fourth Baptist Church.

CABHAA bi-annual year of giving provided needed items to The Ronald McDonald House as well as ten Thanksgiving Food Baskets to ten needy families.

General Information Continues:General Information Continues:CABHAA Scholarship applications and The Effie M. Bryan Class of 1970 Memorial Scholarship packets are now available. Contact Joey Washington (843) 437-0183 or Sharon Coakley (843) 442-6591 for further information.Deadline for packet pick-up is April 1, 2012. An applicant can apply for both scholarships. Scholarship essays will be judged by two different panels of judges composed of teachers from C. A. Brown. Numbers will replace each applicant name on the essays before it is sent to the panel of judges.

CABHAA teamed up with The Preservation Society of Charleston by participating in their 3rd Annual “Eastside Day Celebration” 10/26/11 at Hampstead Square Park. The topic for the evening was “Remembering C. A. Brown High School”. A question and answer panel was made up of Faculty, Staff and Alumni of C. A. Brown. Our president Joey Washington did an outstanding job in highlighting our schools history. More about our plans for a Historical marker is forthcoming. Don’t forget to join us on our website: www.cabhaa.org. As the Association grows, we will do our absolute best to keep you posted through e-mails, letters and by updating our web page. The annual dues for the Association are $25.00.

We continue to worship together in church services quarterly. During the 3rd, we worshipped with Joleitha Solomon at Shiloh AME and during the 4th quarter we worshipped at St. Matthew Baptist Church with Virgie Green and Robert Crawford.

Upcoming & Past EventsUpcoming & Past EventsThe Association Old School Dance and Food Drive held on Friday September 23, 2011 at The North Charleston Inn, showed a tremendous amount of support from our Alumni and friends. We collected an enormous amount of can goods and non-perishable items for our Thanksgiving food basket and Ronald McDonald goodie basket. Many thanks go out to our Alumni for their outstanding support and to the generous donations of several stores, Kevin Gadsden (Coca Cola Bottling Company), and employees at Kapstone Paper Mill. We were able to provide Holiday Cheer to those in need.

Election of officers was held at our December meeting. The term for officers is two years. Listing of our 2012-2014 officers can be found on the last page of this Newsletter.

The Association will sell raffle tickets for one person to attend the weekend Christmas Gala 2012. Tickets will be sold individually for $1.00 or six for $10.00. Come out and support Carolina’s UNCF “Taste of Charleston: Men Who Cook” on Sunday January 29th from 3 until 6pm at Trident Technical College. All proceeds benefit UNCF.

The Association will begin taking orders for t-shirts/sweat shirts. If you’re interested in purchasing a shirt, place your order in advance to avoid not having your size. We will have shirts for sale at the Christmas Gala.

Our Spring Dance is scheduled for Friday April 27, 2012 at the beautiful North Charleston Inn 2934 West Montague Avenue Charleston, SC 29418. Tickets are $8.00 single and $15.00 couple with light hors d’oeuvre and cash bar. For more information contact any Alumni member.
