document)

L.O. To apply your knowledge of suffixes and prefixes to understand the meaning of new words that I meet.

S.C I can identify the root

word I can link the root word to

words I already know I can use this knowledge

to help me work out the meaning of new words

Task – Read ‘How to care for a Mouskin’ below. Use your reading skills: What do you think these words mean? Check them with a dictionary afterwards, were you correct?

Top TipsWriting A root word is a basic word with no prefix or suffix added to it (a prefix is a string of letters that go at the start of a word; a suffix is a string of letters that go at the end of a word). By adding prefixes and suffixes to a root word we can change its meaning.

The root word astro could have the suffix -nomy added to it to make the word astronomy.‘Astro' means 'stars' and 'nomy' means the study of something. Astronomy is the study and knowledge of stars.

The root word lingual could have the prefix bi- added to it to make the word bilingual.'Bi' means two and 'lingual' means pertaining to language. Someone who is bilingual is fluent in two languages.

Mental Maths Choose a times-table that you find tricky and write it out. What patterns do you notice? Ask a grown up to test you.

L.O. To use a protractor to accurately measure angles

S.C I can identify acute,

obtuse and right angles I can estimate the size

of angles I can use my knowledge

of angles to solve problems

Year 6 - Week 2 - Day 3

Qu 3. Estimate the size of the angles if you do not have access to a protractor at home

Top TipsEnglishYour headings are: What you need:Bringing your ______ homeFeeding your __________Exercise and play

MathsAngles are measured in degrees. The symbol for degrees is a little circle °

There are 360° in a full turn.

An angle less than 90° is acute. An angle between 90° and 180° is obtuse. An angle greater than 180° is reflex. An angle of exactly 90° is a right-angle.

half turn I know there are 360˚ in a

full turn

Year 6 - Week 2 - Day 4

Top TipsMathsHow to measure an angle with a protractor:

Place the midpoint of the protractor on the VERTEX of the angle. Line up one side of the angle with the zero line of the protractor (where you see the number 0). Read the degrees where the other side crosses the number scale. Take care to read from the right set of numbers. A protractor has two sets of numbers: one set goes from 0

to 180, the other set from 180 to 0. Which one you read depends on how you place the protractor: place it so that one side of the angle lines up with one of the zeros, and read that set of numbers.
