Nazarene Acres and Kids Are Us Say the first two words and many people in your church will listen well. Say the last three words and people think of the “Toys ‘R’ Us” store. They got it right in their name, even down to the backwards “R”. You know what they are about before you walk in the door. The core of who the Nazarenes are as a faith community is crafted carefully in our creedal language and mission statements. Nazarene Acres and Kids Are Us

Say the first two words and many people in your church will listen well. Say the last three words and people think of the “Toys ‘R’ Us” store. They got it right in their name, even down to the backwards “R”. You know what they are about before you walk in the door.

The core of who the Nazarenes are as a faith community is crafted carefully in our creedal language and mission statements. But the practice of our mission is not said more persuasively than in three short words: kids are us. It really is about the children. We set policy. We distribute funds. We practice wise rule. But all that we do and all that we are about must inevitably have its genesis and outcome in our most precious resource – our children and youth.

Nazarene Acres is the location where we have served children and youth for many generations. But the property itself is not the mission. The mission is the kids. The Acres has been an important vehicle that has served us well and carried us far in the fulfillment of our mission. But for years the cost of maintaining the vehicle has greatly exceeded the income from those who use it. We have regularly turned to our savings to bail ourselves out. Frankly, this situation has been out of control for nearly a decade, and the district assembly considered selling the Acres in 2001. We’ve tried valiantly, communicated carefully and prayed much.

As with all issues that understandably touch the passions of the heart, would you come to the next district assembly thoughtful, prayerful, civil? We don’t need displays of blame, overly emotional tempers, anger. Why? The kids are watching. They are the mission and the mission field. The Acres is our property. But the kids are us, and their ministries deserve our mutual support. — js

PRESIDENT's NOTES:What a great time to serve the Lord! I really feel blessed to be alive at this time in the life of the Christian Church. It is so exciting. Just look around. Wars...rumors of wars...natural disasters abound. It is obvious to me that the fig tree is about to bud and have leaves. For those of you not familiar with prophecy, the stage is set for the return of Christ. Are you ready? What should we do? Continue to live our lives, be ready, and just go about our daily routines. Is your daily routine impacting others for Christ? Is your life causing others to want what you have in your walk with the Lord? My in-laws are Bob and Betty Lewis who presently attend the Pana Church. Bob, who just turned eighty is still playing the piano in the church. Betty, a prayer warrior, who is recovering from a broken hip, still attends church every chance she gets. Those two people have deeply impacted my life. They were married sixty years, May 15, 2008. They provided me a very spirit filled wife who has impacted me. Debbie got her love for Missions watching her mother, Betty, be the NMI president (formally NWMS) in the Murphysboro Church. Me watching Debbie, has helped me fall in love with Missions. The love of my wife and then the love of Missions (which is the love for my Lord and His Great Commission) has allowed me to travel to different areas of the world and see the Great Commission in action. We must realize that Missions is around the world but it is also right in our own back yard. Decatur First W&W team will be leaving June 13, 2008 to assist a local church in Tlaxcala, Mexico, under the leadership of Pastor Tim Crump and NMI president Debbie Hancock. On May 15, 2008, Pastor Tim Crump will be taking a team from Decatur First to Griggsville, IL to assist Pastor Steve Boze in the siding of the parsonage. This will be a combined effort of Griggsville, Mt. Sterling, Pana and local interested people working together to complete this work. People impacting other people through Missions, both local and far away. The question is; are you still impacting others so they too may be saved? People are watching you as you go about your daily life. Is the example you are setting impacting others? We do not realize how many people we impact. I recently was in a professional forensic conference. The speaker was making a scientific presentation when she spotted me in the audience. She stopped speaking, came up to me, put her hand on my shoulder and announced to this audience of professionals and scientists that she was where she was today because of my influence on her life. I was stunned, humbled and felt very honored. It got me to thinking. How many people are walking closer to the Lord because of my influence? How many people have I impacted? How many more can I impact? The Illinois District NMI will try and impact people all over the world with Work & Witness trips to other countries, but we will also do work and witness trips locally and in other parts of this country. Our next trip will be to the Sun Valley Indian School in Arizona. Applications for this trip will start being accepted at the upcoming NMI convention July 18, 2008. The trip is locked in for March 28, 2009 to April 4, 2009. Cost and arrangements will be announced at the convention. Thank you for supporting Missions,Bill BrandonIllinois District NMI President

June Emphasis:World Mission Broadcast Offering

The annual World Mission Broadcast Offering provides resources to reach millions around the world for Christ via broadcast media, especially radio. Received in June each year, the World Mission Broadcast Offering provides funding for program production, airtime, and follow-up materials. Holiness programming, delivered by radio, television and the Internet, reaches around the world with the message of Jesus and his redeeming love and helps to disciple those who respond.

JULY EMPHASISInternational Ministry - Bible Schools & SeminariesNazarene educational institutions around the world are training preachers, teachers, evangelists, nurses, and vocational and lay leaders. This education is essential to the success of evangelistic efforts. Please remember the students, faculty, and their staff in your prayers.

AUGUST EMPHASISLINKS stands for

Loving, Interested Nazarenes, Knowing and Sharing."The LINKS program of the Church of the Nazarene is a network of personal connections between missionaries and Nazarenes around the world. Missionaries are assigned to districts and, then on the district level, connected to local churches. This gives each church an opportunity to become personally acquainted with the missionary family and their field of service. Typically, churches send packages, cash gifts, cards, and other remembrances to their LINKS missionaries. In return, the churches feel a sense of involvement with the world mission enterprise of the church through regular correspondence from the missionaries, updates from their field, and even through deputation services while the missionaries are on furlough. The missionaries are encouraged, knowing people care and pray for them. The relationships built over time personalize names and faces that both the missionaries and their LINKS churches value highly.

The DNA of ChristExcept for the occasional objectionable scene, I enjoy the TV show CSI: Crime Scene Investigation. Each week finds the

team of investigators from the Las Vegas Crime Lab using all the tools of forensic science to solve a mysterious crime. Watching the show regularly is an educational experience. Viewers learn, for example, how hard it is to do anything or be anywhere without leaving something of yourself behind. Fingerprints and footprints are a given, but a single strand of hair, or a little saliva on a drinking glass will do. Why?

The answer is DNA (Deoxyribonucleic acid). DNA is a nucleic acid that contains the internal code of the organism from which it came. The information that determines who you are, everything from eye color to personality type is contained in your DNA. It is found in virtually every cell of your body, therefore it can be used to identify you with almost perfect certainty. All that is needed is a bit of “me: left behind (hair, dry skin, or spit) and any CSI could say with certainty, “Mark Copley was here.” It’s that reliable.

“Now,” the Apostle Paul tells the church, “you are the body of Christ, and each one of you is a part of it.” (1 Corinthians 12:27) So, let us consider for now, the “DNA of Christ” – his body – the Church.

Neil Cole in his book, “Organic Church” does exactly that. He says, “Just as the DNA is exactly the same in almost every cell of a body, the DNA is the same throughout the Body of Christ, for all its members and in every cell. The DNA is the pattern of Kingdom life, from the smallest unit (the disciple in relationship to Jesus and others) to the largest unit. The pattern is the same and its expression remains constant.” (pg 115) So what is the DNA of Christ and his church? Cole (along with Paul Kaak) suggests the following:

Divine Truth. God is the source of all truth. Jesus said, “I am the way, the truth, and the life.” The scriptures and the Spirit both testify to the truth. The truth may be variously interpreted, or misinterpreted, by human beings – but the truth as known in Jesus Christ is essential.

Nurturing Relationships. God himself is revealed as a unity of relationship (Father, Son, and Spirit). “God is love” because God is relational, and he calls us to live in relationship with one another. It is in these relationships that we are shaped into maturity.

Apostolic Mission. “Apostolic” means “one who is sent as a representative with a message.” Jesus himself was sent by the Father to proclaim and embody the message of the Kingdom of God. And, before he left the earth he said to his disciples, “As the Father has sent me, so I am sending you.” (John 20:21)

As you can see, Jesus embodies each of these traits that we are calling his DNA. He is the truth, he chose to live in a community of nurturing relationships (his disciples), and he was sent by the Father with a mission to proclaim the Kingdom and redeem the world.

Jesus also left his DNA behind, passing it on to his disciples by his word and by the Spirit. He commanded them, saying , “Love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind.” (Matthew 22:37-38). This is us abiding in Him, the Divine Truth. Nurturing Relationships were also commanded by Christ in his second commandment, “Love your neighbor as yourself.” (Matthew 22:39-40) The world will know that we are his disciples because of the nature of our relationships. (John 13:35) Finally, Jesus commissioned us, as he did all his apostles, to “Go … and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them… teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you.” (Matthew 28:19-20) This is our Apostolic Mission.

Now, what I want to leave you with is this question: Churches of Illinois, can you see how essential it is for us to have each of these traits active in us if we are to be the body of Christ in our world? Do you see that each part is essential to the health of the body? Take away one element from your DNA and you have a horrendous mutation, which ultimately cannot sustain life. Can you see what will happen to churches who “preach holiness” (Divine Truth) without remembering their Apostolic Mission? Consider churches who preach Divine Truth, and win souls (Apostolic Mission), but who ultimately lose them again because have no structure of Nurturing Relationships by which to disciple them? I suppose we can even imagine churches who nurture relationships and are growing by reaching new people regularly, but who are forfeiting, or watering down Divine Truth to do so. The point is, that if we are going to be “accused” of being the body of Christ, and be “declared guilty” of doing his works, then we must bear the DNA of a healthy Church. Will the state of Illinois find evidence to support that verdict?

In Jesus,

“BEYOND SURVIVAL”Dr. Chuck Millhuff

CHURCH NEWS

GOD IS MOVING AT MT ERIE CHURCH OF THE NAZARENE. We have had four conversions in the last two and a half months. Those people are now being discipled through the Basic Bible Studies Course for New/Growing Christians.Dr Chuck Millhuff held revival services during the first week of April with one conversion and numerous people recommitting their lives to God at the altars. We had wonderful altar services, with many people weeping and seeking God to change their lives. One of the elder saints told Pastor Mike that it was the best revival we have had here in many, many years. We took in three new members on April 20 and then shared a meal with them to celebrate their commitment. The picture shows Pastors Mike & Trudy with two of the new members, Misty Walden on the left and Shelia McMeen on the right. Donavan Stopher also became a member, but was unavailable for the picture. Praise God for His faithfulness!!
