Confirmation Orientation PacketExpectations

Attend classes for 2 years Attend Mass every Sunday and Holy Days of Obligation Help at Mass Letter to Pastor Celebrate Sacrament of Reconciliation during Lent and Advent Essay and presentation on a modern saint 20 hours of community service Weekly tests on Catholic prayers and various concepts taught in class

Attendance in ClassConfirmation is a special outpouring of the Holy Spirit as once granted to the apostles on the

day of Pentecost. In order to prepare for such a big step in your faith life, it is important to adequately prepare yourself for such an event. In alliance with the Yakima Diocese we will meet every Wednesday during the school year for 2 years.

Many of our classes are a combination of online videos and then small group discussions or they are taught by Father David, Youth Minster and the Small Group leaders, or guests. If a class is missed we ask that students make up the class. Students are only allowed to miss and make up 5 classes. If more than 5 classes are missed, a conversation will happen between student, parents, youth minister, and possibly the priest. Please see youth minister as to how to make up each class.

In addition to students attending class we ask that students leave within 20 minutes of class ending. It is important that students get home to work on school as well as get enough rest. We also have volunteers that help out and we like them to get home at a reasonable time as well. If students will be staying longer than 20 minutes a note and phone call need to be sent to the Youth Minster.

Websites Used for ClassesThis year we are trying to be more digital based to meet the needs of our students and Fr.

David’s request. You can find almost 90% of our classes between these two websites. Here is how to access each.

Credible Catholic-Credible Catholic is a program produced by the Fr. Spitzer Institute. You can easily access the website by visiting CredibleCatholic.com on the upper bar there is a “Module” tab. Click that and then enter into the 7 Essential Modules and find the one you are looking for.

Formed-Formed is like the Netflix of Catholic content. To set up a personal account visit the website and upon logging in, add our parish code of: 449536. We are using the “The Creed: Symboln for YDisciple.” You can find this by searching in the search bar or when you scroll down there should be a “Youth” tab. In the carousel of options YDisciple should be there. Once clicking this option, it will bring you to YDisciple landing page which then has a drop down

menu of options. Click on The Creed: Symboln for YDisciple and it will provide all the videos and written materials. You also have the option to “save to My List” for easy access later.

MassAttendance-Attending Mass every week is required of all Catholics. Previously St.

Andrews had prayer cards and envelops that students needed to bring to class, or if they were traveling needed to bring in a signed bulletin from the parish they visited. Just as without nourishing our bodies daily we would die, so too, without nourishing ourselves with the graces provided by this Sacrament, our souls would perish. The Holy Eucharist is the sacrament in which Jesus Christ, our Lord and God, becomes present in our midst. It is this sacrament which distinguishes Catholics from every other religion on earth, and it is through the Eucharist that every grace is given to the world. In short, without the Eucharist, there would be no Church.

Help-Students can be greeters, altar servers, sing in the choir, or be a reader. Students will need to list which Mass they attend most often so that they can be scheduled at a Mass that best suits their needs. Students will receive training on how to do each of these tasks.

Journal-Journals are to help students engage in Mass on a deeper level. By filling out these journals we hope students will more readily know what liturgical season we are in, who is celebrating Mass, what the Readings are and how to find them, and how the homily relates to life. At the end of Mass, they need to fill out the journal and have it signed by the celebrant or a minister of holy communion. They have the option to bring the journal to a visiting parish when on vacation or they may grab a bulletin and have the celebrant sign it. The bulletin must then be turned into Sarah.

Journals will be turned in 3 times a year. The first journal holds September through December, the next will be from late December to Spring Break, and Spring Break to May. At the end of these times, the student needs to have a parent sign off on the front page to acknowledge all their hard work.

Letter to PriestA letter to the pastor is a common practice that shows the Confirmation Candidate is

serious about their faith life. The letter needs to express 4 main topics. Information about the candidate: who they are, age, interests. This helps us know the candidate so we can best minster to them. Current faith habits: do they attend church regularly, do they know all the basic Catholic prayers, do they attend youth group, etc. This information helps us to know what their faith knowledge so that we can adjust class content to a level the students understand. What they hope to learn. While we have a pretty regulated schedule on what candidates must learn we do occasionally have days where the students can request topics we learn about. Lastly, why they desire to be Confirmed. A parent can encourage a candidate to attend class, but they cannot force a student to receive the Sacrament of Confirmation. Letter is due Oct. 9, 2019.

ConfessionStudents need to receive the Sacrament of Confession, also referred to as Penance and

Reconciliation, at least twice during the school year. Confession will be offered during class on

Wednesday, Nov. 13, 2019. It is up to the student and family to make sure they celebrate this sacrament during the Lenten season, as no class has been designated for this. Families are encouraged to receive the Sacrament more often throughout the year.Presentation on a Modern Saint

When the time comes to be Confirmed, students have the opportunity to pick a patron saint which they want to be called. However, prior to this we want students to know that we have had amazing saints canonized within the last 200 years that they can identify with! In the presentation it should include:

Picture or painting of the saint Name of the Saint When they lived and died Where the ministry took place A summary of the saint

What they are a patron saint of (many are known for multiple patronages)

Why you like the saint Something you can do every day to

be like that saintWe have set aside two days in the spring for students to present on their saint. The

students should come prepared with a list of saints as we will not permit two people presenting on the same saint. Sign up for saint presentations is April 1, if saints are not chosen that night, students can sign up that week. If a saint is not picked by the end of the class on April 8, a saint will be assigned to them. Students can choose to have a saint assigned to them if they would like. Presentation days are scheduled as April 22 & 29, 2020.

Community Service Hour LogBeing a Christian, a Catholic, and a disciple of Christ calls us to live our lives

according to the example and instructions Jesus himself gave us. This is our mission as Church, and it’s a BIG responsibility! One of the most important lessons Jesus taught us was that we must be willing to be a servant to all people in His name. This means that we must actually DO something to be a disciple of Christ! By doing parish and community service, we demonstrate a willingness to show Christian responsibility to our mission. Per Diocesan policy, students are required to complete 20 hours of community service. We prefer them to be completed at the church. If you would like to complete them elsewhere please arrange with the youth minister prior to completing the hours! Hours completed at the church also count towards required hours at the school and the youth minster can sign that sheet off.

To help ease the confusion there is a binder in which all students will have a sheet with their name on it so they can sign off information as they complete it. There is a space for the supervisor to sign off, if hours are completed outside of the church students can bring in a signed noted from their supervisor

The completed 20 hours will be due May 6, 2020.

Technology PolicyAs technology is a big part of our world it is understandable that students have devices

readily available to them. At times technology may be used and encouraged in class. However,

for the majority of classes they will not be tolerated. There are key times when students are allowed to use phones and other technology such as: before class, at breaks, and after class.

Students found using technology at inappropriate times, our policy is to warrant a warning. If a student is found a second time, the student will then be asked to place their devices for the remainder of class in a box that will set at the front of the room. Students that choose not to give up their phone will have their parent/guardian notified.

Behavior PolicyWe will do various activities that require different behaviors. Occasionally, we will do

games or activities to teach a point. Often times we are watching videos accompanied by small group discussing. Other times we are expected to be quiet and listening, sometimes manual labor is needed, and many other situations. Students are required to act in appropriate behavior according to the situation.

Our policy is to ask the student to stop a behavior. If it continues, we will then place the student in a new location for the student to try to focus better, or student will be asked to leave the room. Depending on the severity of the situation, a parent/guardian will be notified. If the situation continues to escalate, a meeting with student, parent/guardian, youth minster, and/or priest may be needed.

Parent ResponsibilityWe want to empower you, parent/guardian, to be the primary catechist in your

student’s life. Parents are welcome and encouraged to attend class with students on nights that are not designated parent nights. Comments, questions, and concerns are always welcomed. We want you to own your student’s learning process and aid you along in the process. In the process of signing up your student for Confirmation you signed a Parent Pledge. It outlined these promises:

Thoroughly read and respond to requests made by mail, Remind, and take-home notes regarding Confirmation

I will obtain and keep handy the schedule for the year. I will mark my calendar/phone so that I do not miss these important events in my student’s life.

I will make certain my student attends class on a regular basis and not miss more than 5 days throughout the year.

I will pick up my student promptly at the end of each session. I will attend monthly parent/guardian mandatory meetings. I will attend Mass on a weekly basis

Prayers Students Have to KnowSign of the CrossIn the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

Glory BeGlory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit. As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.

Our FatherOur Father, who art in heaven, hallowed bethy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth, as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. Amen.

Hail MaryHail Mary, Full of Grace, The Lord is with thee. Blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus.Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners now, and at the hour of our death. Amen.

Act of ContritionMy God, I am sorry for my sins with all my heart. In choosing to do wrong and failing to do good, I have sinned against you whom I should love above all things. I firmly intend, with your help, to do penance, to sin no more, and to avoid whatever leads me to sin.Our Savior Jesus Christ suffered and died for us. In His name. My God have mercy. Amen.

Apostles CreedI believe in God, the Father Almighty, creator of Heaven and earth; and in Jesus Christ, His only Son Our Lord, Who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended into Hell; the third day He rose again from the dead; He ascended into Heaven, and sitteth at the right hand of God, the Father almighty; from thence He shall come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body and life everlasting. Amen.

Salve Regina (Hail, Holy Queen)Hail, holy Queen, mother of Mercy. Hail, our life, our sweetness and our hope. To thee do we cry, poor banished children of Eve; to thee do we send up our sighs, mourning and weeping, in this vale of tears. Turn then, most gracious advocate, thine eyes of mercy toward us; and after this our exile, show unto us the blessed fruit of thy womb, Jesus.O clement, O loving, O sweet virgin Mary. Pray for us oh Holy Mother of God that we may be made worthy of the promises of Jesus Christ our Lord.

Guardian Angel PrayerAngel of God, my guardian dear, To whom God's love commits me here, Ever this day,be at my side, To light and guard, Rule and guide. Amen.

Grace Before Meals

Bless us of Lord, and these Thy gifts which we are about to receive from Thy bounty through Christ our Lord. Amen.
