Creativity Term Project Phase One—Group Work: (initial concept presentations and critiques in class week of April 17-19) Working with your teammates from the creativity interviews and mapping projects, conceptualize a project that draws from ideas in one of the projects the Smith text and inspires you to create an urban “intervention” project in Winston Salem. As a team, (1) read through and discuss your assigned project from “Design With the Other 90%” and list the aspects of the project that inspire you. Discuss why they inspire you, and which aspects of the project seemed especially creative. (2) find a neighborhood/place in Winston Salem that is in need of revitalization. This should be an urban neighborhood. Although it can include residential elements, it should not be exclusively residential. Prior to April 19 th interview as a team (all team members need to be present for the interviews) at least four people in the neighborhood to find out what they feel is missing from their community and what they would like to see in the their community, both in terms of a sense of identity for the neighborhood and in terms of resources and buildings and space. Explain that this is a visioning exercise, as you are working to come up with ideas for transforming public space. Present the following in class on the week of April 17 th -- 19 th : 1. The project in Design with the other 90% that inspired you (Powerpoint presentation), 1

Creativity Term ProjectPhase One—Group Work: (initial concept presentations and critiques in class week of April 17-19)Working with your teammates from the creativity interviews and mapping projects, conceptualize a project that draws from ideas in one of the projects the Smith text and inspires you to create an urban “intervention” project in Winston Salem. Prior to April 19th interview as a team (all team members need to be present for the interviews) at least four people in the neighborhood to find out what they feel is missing from their community and what they would like to see in the their community, both in terms of a sense of identity for the neighborhood and in terms of resources and buildings and space. Explain that this is a visioning exercise, as you are working to come up with ideas for transforming public space. Present the following in class on the week of April 17th -- 19th:

1. The project in Design with the other 90% that inspired you (Powerpoint presentation), reporting to the class the creative aspects of the design

2. Your findings from your neighborhood interviews3. Your initial concept “idea” for an intervention/transformation

(Be sure to document the team creative process in evolving and refining ideas, as this will be part of your analysis and final report. Creativity process analysis (to be completed with individual Penzu notes during your preparation for Phase One presentations on April 19th): What aspects of the “Design with the other 90%” project inspired your team, and why? What did you learn from the interviews that also inspired you? How did the ideas presented by interviewees contribute to your creative processes? How did your own visioning process post-interview take place, and what role did collaborative work play in boosting your creativity? What were the strengths of individual team members in contributing to this process? What were the specific steps and

processes that led to the formulation of your initial concept idea? In what way did your own team process mirror stage theory? In what way did it mirror particular disciplinary approaches that have been identified through the mapping project?)

Phase Two—Refinement, Analysis and Presentation (final presentations in class week of April 24th - 26th)

Devise a project map (you can get neighborhood data from Google Earth or Google Maps) with overlays that show the locations and dimensions of your revitalization project. Present (a) your final project idea to the class, and (b) a collaborative map and a diagram and/or illustration of your findings from the creativity process analysis., and (c) the results of your individual reflections on the creative process in diagram or map form, and a brief discussion of how your own approaches to creativity as an individual were challenged and/or enhanced. Include in your analysis both your team’s work on the final project for Phase One, as well as for Phase Two. Along with your presentation of your urban intervention, present a map that illustrates the various phases/steps/pieces of your creative process. Consider how to graphically present both linear and nonlinear processes that contributed to the end result. Also due on April 26th are your individual reflections on the collaborative process in your team’s development of the term project. Include a map or diagram that illustrates your insights into the creative process as a collaborative exercise. What role did you personally play in the creative process? In what ways was your understanding of your creative processes enhanced by this process? How were you challenged? What role did challenges and frustrations play in the creative process? When did your team do its best work, and why? If you had to do the process over again, what would you do differently, and why? Your reflection essay should be 4-5 pages, 1 ½ line spaced, in addition to diagrams and maps.

Neighborhoods for mapping project:

This pdf from the City of Winston Salem is zoomable, and includes all of the downtown neighborhoods: http://www.cityofws.org/Assets/CityOfWS//Documents/Planning/Maps/Nhbds_GreaterWinston.pdf

Take a look with Google Maps or Google Earth to scope out the different neighborhoods.

1. West End  (particularly Fourth between Broad and Grace Court Park)2. Goler (this is the neighborhood that has a development corporation created

by the local church)  (particularly area on 6th between Main and Patterson and blocks immediately south of Main))

3. South Marshall (particularly the area around the intersections of Marshall and Brookstown as well as further east on Brookstown)

4. West Salem (particularly intersection of Academy and Peter's Creek)5. Washington Park (particularly Main Street between Vintage and Acadia, as

well as Acadia between Broad and Main)6. Downtown Core:  Liberty Street between Fourth and Sixth)

See next page for a blown up portion of the City of Winston neighborhood PDF map, showing all six of the neighborhoods:

COMMUNITY INTERVIEWS:

In approaching community members, ask if you can have a few minutes of their time to ask questions for a project you're working on about community identity for a class project.  Identify yourself as a Wake Forest student enrolled in a creativity class studying Winston Salem.

Do not mention that your project is to redesign or revitalize their neighborhood, but approach this as an opportunity to find out from them about their views on the neighborhood in which they live or work.  Aim for open ended questions such as "What do you like about your neighborhood?" rather than "Do you like your neighborhood?"

Things to ask:

1.  History, past experience in the neighborhood:     How long have they lived there, and have they seen changes over time in the years they have lived there?

2.  Present:     How does the person like living or working in the neighborhood? What particular things do they like?  What features, buildings, places or events help define the neighborhood for them?

3. Visioning for the future:   What sorts of changes would they like to see in the neighborhood in the future?  Are there resources or amenities they would like the neighborhood to have?  If they had a role in improving the neighborhood, what would they like to be in charge of?

Things not to ask:  (personal information—estimate the individual's age, record responses on paper, do not use intrusive video or audio recordings)

Creativity Term Project documentation (creativity logs and individual reflections)  One Penzu posting per team meeting.  At least one meeting per week.

The journaling of your creativity term project is a critical piece of this project.  Think of the creativity exercise you will be engaged in as a laboratory for you to examine (a) the collaborative creative process among your team members and as a collective entity, and (b) your role in that creative process.  Designate a different team member each week to take turns recording your creative process as a team.  Keep in mind the

different steps outlined in stage theory as well as in each of your revised models of stage theory.  Consider both linear processes and non-linear ones as your team moves forward in developing your creative ideas.

Each time your team meets, all of your team members should be taking notes throughout the meeting on your creative processes.  Your team should record the following in your team creativity log:CREATIVITY LOG:1.Creativity quotient (high, medium, low) for the meeting, and reasons for

the level you attained2.Process and breakthroughs (What process did your team use to make

progress?  Did the process change in any way from previous meetings? When did you have breakthroughs and why?)

3.Role of collaboration and contributions of each team member to the creative process

4.A time flow "map" that diagrams the process your group went through during the meeting, and describes the steps the team took in refining ideas.

Each team member should take  turns submitting this information.

INDIVIDUAL REFLECTION:Following each meeting (within the same day) all team members should review your notes from the meeting and write a multi paragraph reflection on the meeting, on what your team accomplished overall, and your assessment of the success of the meeting.  Each team member should take  turns submitting the recording and the reflection mini-essay.

Note that all of your Penzu entries from your individual journaling of your team's term project and the team Penzu postings will be used as source material in writing up your analysis in Phase Two of the Term Project.
