Coal reservoirs in the North East are considered to be of high quality. It is also ideally suited for unconventional usages like Syn Crude from coal liquefaction. It has become an increasingly important resource base and will emerge as important contributor to the oil and gas reserves and production. The opportunities for unexploited Coal Bed Methane can be an important contributor to the energy output of the region.
The session will focus on: What is the opportunity for investments in this sector ? Attributed to be high on quality, is the resource being judiciously utilized
for specialized purpose ? Value Proposition for Coal bed Methane in the North East. What are the technological interventions that can make
exploration/mining viable ? What are the attendant benefits for coal liquefaction, coal bed methane
exploration ? How to use private- public partnerships to create relevant business
models ?

1545 – 1700 hrs Plenary Session III :: Opportunities & Challenges in Oil & Gas
Oil and gas sector in the region is century-old and well established. But in spite of having excess energy compared to the energy deficient rest of India, the Region is yet to get priority and has remained highly unexplored. Area wise, only 30 per cent of the petroliferous basin has so far been explored.
The opportunities of gas based industry is immense but critical supply issues including excavation and exploration can be offset by having a regional pipeline and connectivity with the National grid to ensure flow into and outside the region.
