Design for LearningInstructor: Rebecca Hastings Grade Level/Cooperating Teacher: 2nd GradeLesson Title: Synonym Junction Date: November 12, 2016Curriculum Area: English Language Arts Estimated Time: 30 minutes

Standards Connection:

Language Arts Standards:39.) Demonstrate understanding of word relationships and nuances in word meanings. [L. 2.5]

d. Distinguish shades of meaning among closely related verbs (e.g., toss, throw, hurl) and closely related adjectives (e.g., slender, skinny, scrawny). [L. 2.5b]

Technology Standards:5.) Practice responsible use of technology systems and applications.

Example: maintaining proper settings

6.) Identify uses of technology systems in daily living.

Learning Objective(s):Students will correctly identify synonyms and the reason for the use of synonyms when engaging in a Kahoot quiz.

Learning Objective(s) stated in “kid-friendly” language:Today we are going to learn what synonyms are and why we use them!

Evaluation of Learning Objective(s):The students will correctly answer 5 out of the 6 questions about synonyms on the Kahoot quiz.

Engagement:The teacher will begin the lesson by playing a video that introduces the idea of synonyms and what they are. Today class, we are going to be learning about synonyms. By the end of this lesson, you are going to be able to explain what a synonym is, and you will be able to give an example of synonyms you know! Before we learn what synonyms are, we are going to watch a video that gives us an idea of how to use them! I want everyone to put their listening ears on and focus their attention to the video. Watch closely! The teacher will play the video “Flocabulary Songs: Context” to the students. You all did a great job listening and paying attention to that video. Can anyone raise their hand and tell me something you learned from the video? Something you took away? That is right! We can be detectives when we are reading. If we don’t know what a word means, that does not mean we have to be stuck and confused; instead, we can be a detective and look for words around the word we do not know. Can someone tell me why words around our unknown word may help us know the meaning of the word we do not know? Good thinking! Sometimes the words around the word we do not know might mean the same thing, or other times the words around the unknown word might even mean the opposite. We can

look at the entire sentence and see what clues we can find to help us know what those words might mean. Let’s take a look a little more closely at words that mean the same thing.

Learning Design:

I. Teaching: The teacher will introduce the word “synonym” to the students. When giving examples of synonyms and saying the definition, the teacher will write the example pairs down on an anchor chart while also including the definition of a synonym. In the video you saw the word “synonym.” Have you ever heard this word before? It’s a funny word to say. Can you say it with me? “Synonym”. A synonym is a word that means something very similar to another word. These words basically mean the same thing. For example, a synonym for “shut” is “close”. When you shut a door, you are keeping something from coming in or out of that room. If someone were to say they closed the door, they would be meaning the same thing! When you close a door, you are also keeping something from coming in or out of the room. Why would we want to have more than one word that mean the same thing? That means there are more words that we have to learn! Why do you think we do this? Synonyms allow us to use different words in our sentences, rather than saying the same thing over and over. If we did not have several words that meant the same thing, our language and sentences would be pretty boring wouldn’t they? I want us to think: If you wanted to say “I need to go to the bathroom”, what is another way you could say that sentence? That is a good option! You could say “I need to go to the restroom.” Do you know what the synonyms are in those two sentences? That’s right! The words “bathroom” and “restroom” are synonyms because they mean very similar things. A non-example of a synonym would be “hot” and “cold”. Do these words mean the same thing? You’re right, these two words do not mean the same thing; instead, they mean the opposite! Can anyone tell me what we said a synonym is? That was a great answer. A synonym is something that means the same thing as another word. Now that we know what a synonym is, I want us to brainstorm examples of synonyms! Let’s look at the word “pretty.” What are some words that mean the same thing as pretty? Those are all good examples! I am going to write them on our chart paper that looks like paint strips! Just like the colors on this paint strip look similar to one another, the words that are written on them mean similar things as well! If they are similar or the same, what can they be called? Synonyms! Okay, let’s look at another word. “Smelly.” What are some other words that can be used to describe the word smelly? Man, you all are very smart in finding synonyms for our given word! Each of those words do mean the same thing as smelly! Now the word “fast.” What are some words that mean the same thing as fast? Each of those words do mean fast! Do you think those words describe you when you are playing with your friends on the playground? I know I see you racing out there during recess. The last word I want to look at is the word “fun.” I think you can think of a lot of words that also mean fun. What can you come up with? Man, you all are very smart. I think you understand what a synonym is. I would like for someone to tell me how we can use our knowledge and understanding of synonyms when we are reading, writing, or talking. If you are reading and you come across a word you do not know, look at the words around it and see if there is something that sounds like it means the same thing. If you find something that you think might mean the same thing as the word you do not know, that word might be a synonym! We also can use synonyms when we are writing or talking to make what we are saying a little more interesting. When you use the same word over and over, does it get a little old to hear or read? I think it does. That is why it is important to vary what we say and use different words to keep it more interesting! I think each of you have a good understanding of synonyms, and now I want you to show me that you do!

II. Opportunity for Practice: The teacher will allow the students to play the game charades on the iPad with a partner. Before playing the game, students will gain an understanding of how the technology can be used in their every day life. The students will use each iPad appropriately and open up the Charades app correctly and independently. They will play the game in pairs. One partner will hold the iPad on their forward facing out toward their partner, while the other partner describes the word on the screen using synonyms. Once the word is guessed correctly, the player with the iPad will tilt the screen down and a new word will appear. Whoever guesses the most words wins. Because you know so much about synonyms now, I want you to have some fun while practicing. I want everyone to find a partner. Once you are with your partner, I want you to stand quietly next to them while you wait for the next step. We are going to practice describing words by using synonyms to explain what they mean. Have any of you heard of the game Charades before? This is a game you can play with your friends without any technology, but it is also a game you can play on your phone or iPad! Technology can be used in school, but it can also be used outside of school. This is a game you can play with your friends or family to review things you are learning. Now, when I tell you to begin, one partner is going to get an iPad and open up the app Charades. You are going to click on the deck that is titled “synonyms.” Decide which partner is going to guess first, and which partner is going to describe first. After you make that decision, the guesser is going to begin the game and place the iPad on his or her forehead. The describer is then going to describe the word that is on the screen, but you can only describe it by using words that are synonyms with the word on the screen. Can you describe what it looks like or what it does? No! You must use synonyms to describe the word. When the guesser guesses the correct word, he or she will tilt the iPad down and a new word will appear to describe. When time is up, the team with the most correct guesses wins! I am going to walk around the room and listen to your group as you guess and describe using synonyms! Does anyone have any questions? Okay class, let’s get to guessing!

III. Assessment: To assess the students, the teacher will engage them in a Kahoot quiz that will ask them a couple of questions about synonyms. I loved watching each of you use your synonym knowledge to describe the words during the Charades game! Each of you thought of all of the words you could think of that would describe the word on the screen. I observed great teamwork! To finish our lesson today, we are going to play a Kahoot to test your final synonym knowledge. I want everyone to get out their iPad and go to kahoot.it. I am going to put the pin number for our game on the board so you can connect! First, go to kahoot.it. It should then say “game pin.” In this box, write the number you see on the board. Once you are connected and in the game, you should be able to see your name on the board! Is everyone connected and ready? A question is going to appear on the screen, and you are going to click the correct answer on the iPad. Colors and shapes represent the answer choices. Make sure you click the one you think is right! Okay friends, let’s begin our Kahoot! Try your best!

IV. Closure: All of you were very zoned into that game! We saw the scores jump back and forth, mainly according to your speed! I loved how hard you worked today learning what synonyms were and beginning to recognize words that mean the same thing as other words. Can someone raise their hand and tell me why we want to use synonyms in our language? Yes! We use synonyms to keep our reading and writing interesting, and we can also use them while we are reading to help us

Page 4: rebeccadhastings.weebly.com€¦  · Web viewCan anyone raise their hand and tell me something you learned from the video? Something you took away? That is right! We can be detectives

figure out what other words means around it. Later on, we are going to practice how to be that detective, but we are going to wait until another day to do that. Great job today, friends!

Data Analysis:When reviewing the students’ performance, both students answered all 6 questions correctly. Student 1 scored higher on the Kahoot than the Student 2, simply because she clicked the answers quicker than Student 2. Both knew the correct answer, and both showed that knowledge through this assessment. Because they did not miss an answer, they do not need to receive any reteaching or be reassessed. The next step would be for them to apply their knowledge of synonyms when reading or writing.
