In our English lessons, we spend a lot of time practicing our phonics. Phonics practise helps us to be better readers and writers. We look at sentences and see which phonics we can spot. You will need your phonics mat to help you with this activity. It may also be helpful to have a highlighter pen too. Look at the sentence and see which phonics you can spot, for example…. You could take a picture of your work or ask a parent / carer to write about how you got on. We love to hear how you are progressing with your English tasks.

Phonics – what can you spot?

In our English lessons, we spend a lot of time practicing our phonics. Phonics practise helps us to be better readers and writers. We look at sentences and see which phonics we can spot. You will need your phonics mat to help you with this activity. It may also be helpful to have a highlighter pen too. Look at the sentence and see which phonics you can spot, for example….

Mark and Jill got wet in the rain.

1. Read it first.2. Pick up your highlighter.3. Look at each word and see if you can see any phonics.4. I have spotted 3 different phonics.

Did you spot air as in chair?

Did you spot oo as in moon?

Did you spot th as in hard th?

We call it a ‘hard th’ because of the hard / tickly sound your tongue makes behind your teeth. A ‘soft th as in thumb’ makes a quiet soft sound as your tong comes out; thank you, thistle, thumb, thin….)You may have spotted other phonics from phase 2 sound mat which is perfectly acceptable. For example, you may have spotted c as in carrot.

Try these sentences and then check your answers.
