Assignment: Essay on 3D Gaming 1: There are millions of industries that use 3D but some of the industries that use 3D for gaming are for example ‘Ubisoft’ and they use 3D because games are becoming more and more realistic and the use of 3D makes the gamer feel like he actually is the character, and as a fellow gamer I love that feeling of being the character drawing out his sword and fighting to save the world. 3D makes all that possible and that is why gaming and even TV industries use it. Even film industries like Disney Pixar and an example of a very famous fil the made in 3d is Toy Story and they made the film 3D to give it a new feeling of realty so you feel like you are a toy or are in the film as they do in games. 2: There are tons of 3D software out there, but the ones that stand out there for me anyway are ‘TheUnreal engine’ and ‘Unity’ but even some of the best have their disadvantages and some of them are for example: File space, masking and game on a 3D software can take up a lot of file space and that means you might need to go out and buy more space or a Terabyte memory stick which can cost a lot. Another disadvantage of using 3D software is that if you were to make a character on a 3D software and you use a high polygon count, it can take a very long time to render the character which can take up a lot of file space as I said or the computer you have may not have the right graphic card or might not be strong enough.

1: There are millions of industries that use 3D but some of the industries that use 3D for gaming are for example ‘Ubisoft’ and they use 3D because games are becoming more and more realistic and the use of 3D makes the gamer feel like he actually is the character, and as a fellow gamer I love that feeling of being the character drawing out his sword and fighting to save the world. 3D makes all that possible and that is why gaming and even TV industries use it. Even film industries like Disney Pixar and an example of a very famous fil the made in 3d is Toy Story and they made the film 3D to give it a new feeling of realty so you feel like you are a toy or are in the film as they do in games.

But not everything is bad, there are some advantages to using 3D and they are, you can make the character or the environment in so much more detail and make it look more realistic which a lot of gamers love, it is also unique as you can make anything you want and bring it to life and bring it into a 3D dimension. Another advantage is that with 3D you can use it for anything for example you can use it if you are an architect or a designer of any sort.

3: The industry that created Batman Arkham Knight was the unreal engine and they created this beautiful game because the batman games are one of the most love games so it was

produced for every Batman fan out there and has been said to be one if not the best batman game ever created. The pitcher I used is of ‘The Arkham Knight’ or aka Red Hood/Jason Todd and he is one of the game characters/ models. The picture has amazing lighting as it looks like a spotlight and it has a backlight, as it is not casting a shadow.

4: Geometric theory: In the geometric theory there are vertices, edges and faces and they are normally used in computer graphics to be used in a 3D space. Every Geometric shape has these principles. Another word for faces are polygons. In gaming there is something called Polygonal modelling and that is that the basic object used in mesh modeling is a vertex and this is a point in 3D space.

5: some of the constraints of using 3D is that when making a game there is something called a polygon count and the higher the polygon the longer it will take to render the game and the more polygons the more file space it will take. This can be a bad thing as if you were to make a high polygon character and depending on

the pc you had it could take a very long time and if you had a deadline you may miss it because of the time it is taking. The fail size is very important as all your hard work of making a character for 7 hours and then to find out you can’t save or render it because you didn’t have enough space or haven’t got the right graphics card.

in mesh modelling we use something called primitives and that is a start of a shape and everything must start from something. Mesh modeling is the process of taking a shape and modeling it into a completed 3D shape. There is also something called Spline modeling and this is a technique used to create a curve in 3D space. There is also a technique used and that is when you create something from a primitive and the start of from a vertex or a vertices and make a line connecting from it to another and that makes a face/edge/polygon.

7: One of the common viewing modes that can be used to make a 3D character is something called “Zoom” and this tool allows you to zoom into the model that you have created or are creating and add in the smaller details and extra pieces for example a red dot on a scope or the an iris in the eye. This tool can be very useful tool when making a game look realistic or even if you are trying to make a Cel-shaded game.

8: This character is of a metal gear solid character called Snake. One of the viewing modes that was used to make this character would have been the rotation mode. This mode allows you to rotate around the character so you can see the entire model in full detail and all of his angles. This mode would be very important as making a 3D character as you will need to see all of the character not just the front or it will not work. So a quick summary this mode gives you a 360 viewing of the character that is being made or has been made.

9: When making a 3D game one of the most important things is the lighting and there are so many types, some for example are. Spot lights, this type of lighting gives the impression that there is a spot light on a character. This lighting can be used to make the player focus on a certain thing for example if that in a game there is police interrogation happening or there is a certain object that needs to be collected. With this type of lighting you would normally have to create shadows to make the game more realistic.

Another type of 3D lighting is Directional lighting. This type of lighting gives the impression of the sun so it lights up the whole surrounding with light so this light is important as if you are trying to make a game have a day time which most games do. This lighting is commonly used in Free world explores or space games. Like the spot light you would have to make the objects have a shadow to make it look more realistic.

10: The game I have chosen is Splinter Cell as this games most important this is the lighting. The lighting in this image is a spot light which is behind him, they have done this to give him a mysterious and stealth look and feeling as this game is all about stealth so as I said lighting is the key as you are sneaking through the shadows to take your next victim. The light is behind him so you can’t see his face and this is done on purpose as the game doesn’t want you to see him to create the silent and aerie atmosphere.

11: The use of textures and materials in 3D is very important as the texture and materials are what gives the characters and the environments in the game and brings it to life and give it

purpose. Without these the character and environment would just be plane and boring and would be no fun to play. This is why these properties are important in any game not just 3D. This is not just clothing and skin textures there is also shading

which can bring depth in the character and also make the game look more realistic and make shadows.

12: I have chosen Lara Croft as her texture and the materials she has are very unique. The character designer has made Lara Croft less of a sex figure and more of a helpless look even though she looks after herself pretty well. They have made her look dirty and injured. This is very different than her original design as she was designed to be a sex figure. There is a lot of detail in her design as it is a photorealistic game. They have used dark color’s for example gray and black to give her a dark and scared feeling and the dirt texture is used to make it feel like she has been through a rough time and is always busy.

13: Rendering in 3D is when the model that you have made becomes animated and gives it all the details and textures. This what makes what you have made life and turns it into what you have wanted it to look like in the first place, when rendering a game it takes up file space also you may need a graphics card to actually run a game, one of the graphics cards is called Open GL. Open GL is a very strong graphics card used for making and running games.

14: In the scene one of the rendering techniques that has been used and that is when all of it has finished so it has everything, it has all the animation and textures and materials. So it has completed everything and all the polygons are no longer visible. The output of this is that for the game has a high polygon count so it will have a large file count so you will need a good graphics card or a gaming

console/pc. It will also take a long time to render depending on the graphic capability.

15: Mesh construction is a technique that is used in 3D modeling where the model is created by modifying primitive shapes to create a rough draft of the final model, in most cases. A primary function of box modeling involves extruding and scaling the faces, which are the flat planes that make up a model. Mesh modeling can be used to make characters, and models of different things like a box.
