THE LITURGY OF THE WORD

First Reading –Acts 17:22-3122Paul stood in front of the Areopagus and said, ‘Athenians, I see how extremely religious you are in every way. 23For as I went through the city and looked carefully at the objects of your worship, I found among them an altar with the inscription, “To an unknown god.” What therefore you worship as unknown, this I proclaim to you. 24The God who made the world and everything in it, he who is Lord of heaven and earth, does not live in shrines made by human hands, 25nor is he served by human hands, as though he needed anything, since he himself gives to all mortals life and breath and all things. 26From one ancestor he made all nations to inhabit the whole earth, and he allotted the times of their existence and the boundaries of the places where they would live, 27so that they would search for God and perhaps grope for him and find him - though indeed he is not far from each one of us. 28For “In him we live and move and have our being”; as even some of your own poets have

Page 6: €¦  · Web viewAll. are welcome at our worship as we come together as friends, equals and fellow disciples of Jesus Christ. T he Gathering. The Greeting. In the name of the Father, and

said,“For we too are his offspring.”

29Since we are God’s offspring, we ought not to think that the deity is like gold, or silver, or stone, an image formed by the art and imagination of mortals. 30While God has overlooked the times of human ignorance, now he commands all people everywhere to repent, 31because he has fixed a day on which he will have the world judged in righteousness by a man whom he has appointed, and of this he has given assurance to all by raising him from the dead.’

At the end the reader says

This is the word of the Lord. All Thanks be to God.

Second Reading – 1 Peter 3:13-2213Who will harm you if you are eager to do what is good? 14But even if you do suffer for doing what is right, you are blessed. Do not fear what they fear, and do not be intimidated, 15but in your hearts sanctify Christ as Lord. Always be ready to make your defence to anyone who demands from you an account of the hope that is in you; 16yet do it with gentleness and reverence. Keep your conscience clear, so that, when you are maligned, those who abuse you for your good conduct in Christ may be put to shame. 17For it is better to suffer for doing good, if suffering should be God’s will, than to suffer for doing evil. 18For Christ also suffered for sins once for all, the righteous for the unrighteous, in order to bring you to God. He was put to death in the flesh, but made alive in the spirit, 19in which also he went and made a proclamation to the spirits in prison, 20who in former times did not obey, when God waited patiently in the days of Noah, during the building of the ark, in which a few, that is, eight persons, were saved through water. 21And baptism, which this prefigured, now

saves you – not as a removal of dirt from the body, but as an appeal to God for a good conscience, through the resurrection of Jesus Christ, 22who has gone into heaven and is at the right hand of God, with angels, authorities, and powers made subject to him.

At the end the reader says

This is the word of the Lord. All Thanks be to God.

Gospel Reading – John 14:15-21

Alleluia, Alleluia.I am the first and the last, says the Lord, and the living one;I was dead, and behold I am alive for evermore.

All Alleluia.Hear the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to John.

All Glory to you, O Lord.Jesus said to his disciples: 15‘If you love me, you will keep my commandments. 16And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Advocate, to be with you for ever. 17This is the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees him nor knows him. You know him, because he abides with you, and he will be in you. 18I will not leave you orphaned; I am coming to you. 19In a little while the world will no longer see me, but you will see me; because I live, you also will live. 20On that day you will know that I am in my Father, and you in me, and I in you. 21They who have my commandments and keep them are those who love me; and those who love me will be loved by my Father, and I will love them and reveal myself to them.’

This is the Gospel of the Lord. All Praise to you, O Christ.

The Sermon

Page 8: €¦  · Web viewAll. are welcome at our worship as we come together as friends, equals and fellow disciples of Jesus Christ. T he Gathering. The Greeting. In the name of the Father, and

The Creed

We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God,eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father; through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven, was incarnate from the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary and was made man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son,who with the Father and the Son is worshipped and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins.We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.

Prayers of Intercession …at the end

Merciful Father,All accept these prayers

for the sake of your Son,our Saviour Jesus Christ.Amen.

All It is right to give thanks and praise.

It is indeed right, our duty and our joy, always and everywhere to give you thanks, almighty and eternal Father, and in these days of Easterto celebrate with joyful heartsthe memory of your wonderful works. For by the mystery of his passionJesus Christ, your risen Son,has conquered the powers of death and helland restored in men and women the image of your glory. He has placed them once more in paradiseand opened to them the gate of life eternal. And so, in the joy of this Passover, earth and heaven resound with gladness, while angels and archangels and the powers of all creationsinging for ever the hymn of your glory:

All Holy, holy, holy Lord,God of power and might, heaven and earth are full of your glory.Hosanna in the highest.Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.Hosanna in the highest.

We praise and bless you, loving Father, through Jesus Christ, our Lord;and as we obey his command, send your Holy Spirit, that broken bread and wine outpouredmay be for us the body and blood of your dear Son.

On the night before he died he had supper with his friendsand, taking bread, he praised you.

Page 11: €¦  · Web viewAll. are welcome at our worship as we come together as friends, equals and fellow disciples of Jesus Christ. T he Gathering. The Greeting. In the name of the Father, and

He broke the bread, gave it to them and said:Take, eat; this is my body which is given for you;do this in remembrance of me.

When supper was ended he took the cup of wine.Again he praised you, gave it to them and said:Drink this, all of you;this is my blood of the new covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins.Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me.

So, Father, we remember all that Jesus did,in him we plead with confidence his sacrificemade once for all upon the cross.

Bringing before you the bread of life and cup of salvation,we proclaim his death and resurrectionuntil he comes in glory.

Let us proclaim the miracle of faith:All Christ has died:

Christ is risen:Christ will come again.Look with favour on your people, gather us in your loving armsand bring us with the Blessed Virgin Mary, Hilda, and all the saints to feast at your table in heaven.

Through Christ, and with Christ, and in Christ,in the unity of the Holy Spirit, all honour and glory are yours, O loving Father, for ever and ever.

All Amen.
