Writing Activity W/C 04.05.20

The Zoo Vet What happened next?

What do you think happened at the zoo vet’s surgery? Write your own story about what was wrong with each new patient and how the vet helped them. Work with your child to discuss what they can see in the picture. Discuss the animal names and look at how they are spelt. What could be wrong with each of the animals? Are there any clues in the picture? Encourage your child to start to orally plan their story, and think about what could happen at the start, middle and end of their story. What would be an appropriate opening? E.g. It was a busy day in the Zoo vet’s surgery. Continue to use questions to help them plan their story. Ask them to retell you their story until they are really confident in saying what they would like to write. Remind your child to think carefully about each sentence and say it several times if needed, until they can hold the sentence and then record it. Remind them that we are expecting to see finger spaces, capital letters, full stops and beautiful handwriting with their letters the correct size in relation to each other. Encourage them to read their writing back to check for any errors in spelling or punctuation.

What types of food do animals eat?Key vocabulary: carnivore, herbivore, omnivores, Venn diagram

Watch the following clip https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/topics/z6882hv/articles/z96vb9q

After watching the video clip, work with your child to write the names of different animals on to pieces of paper E.g. rabbit, otter, fox, deer, tawny owl, badger, horse, hedgehog. On larger pieces of paper write the group names – carnivores, herbivores, omnivores. Work together to discuss the animals and try to sort the animals into the correct group. If there’s any that you’re not sure of, you can use the internet or books to complete some research. Can you add any more animals to the groups? How fast can you sort all of the animals into the correct group? Can you do it faster than you’re grown up?

Once you are confident at grouping some animals by the food that they eat, why not try the activity below. You can either print it off, or create your own. For this activity you will need to sort the animals on page 3 into the correct section of the Venn diagram. If you are not sure what a certain animal eats, ask your grown up to help you research the animal on the internet.

We have included the answers so that you can check your learning afterwards.
