Activity 1 – Division Word Problems

Key Vocabulary: share equally

Use last week’s learning about division on a number line and RUCSAC to help you answer these word problems.

Mild

1. During an art lesson,30 pencils are shared between 5 children. They think they will get 5 each. Are they correct? Show me how you know.

2. 26 apples are shared between 2 classes of children. How many apples will each class receive?

3. Ellie goes on a bike ride with her family. She rides 18 miles and it takes 3 hours. How many miles an hour does she ride?

4. Philip says that he has baked 24 chocolate cookies to share equally between his six friends. He has worked out that they can have 3 cookies each and he will have 3 left over for himself. Is he correct? How do you know?

Spicy

1. Maisie and Molly have baked rock cakes to share equally with the children in Care Club. They have given each child 3 cakes and baked a total of 36 cakes. How many children are there in Care Club?

2. Harrison is halfway through his book. The book has 68 pages. How many pages has he read?

3. At Sports’ Day, the Year 6 children take part in an activity in which they have to run up and down an 80m track. The winner runs a total of 720m. How many times does he run up and down the track?

4. In the supermarket, baked beans are stacked in rows of 8 cans. The shopkeeper has taken delivery of 98 cans. How many shelves will he be able to fill? Will he have any cans left over?

Hot

1. Annabel is reading a book about adventures at a horse riding stables. She is one third of the way through the book and there is a total of 270 pages. How many pages has she read?

Blow your mind

Henry is going on holiday with his family. The journey is 340 miles in total and the car travels at an average of 50 miles per hour. How long will the journey take in hours and minutes?

Activity 2 – Adding fractions with the same denominator

Key Vocabulary - Numerator is the number of parts of the whole we are interested in

- Denominator is the total number of parts of the whole that there are

Look at this shape. 29

The total number of parts that are shaded is 2 so this is the numerator. The total number of parts that the shape is divided into is 9 so this is the denominator. Therefore, the fraction of the whole shape that has been shaded is therefore 2

9 Now look at this one:

78

The total number of parts that are shaded is 7 so this is the numerator of our fraction. The total number of parts that the shape is divided into is 8 so this is the denominator of our fraction. The fraction shown is therefore 7

8

We can use this learning to help us add fractions together.

2 + 4 + 1 = 79 9 9 9 So when we add fractions with the same

denominator, the number of parts that the whole is divided into is not changing so the denominator does not change.

Task 1 Now choose one of the challenges on our class page; mild, spicy or hot.

Task 2

Page 4:   · Web viewActivity 1 – Division Word Problems. Key Vocabulary: share equally. Use last week’s learning about division on a number line and RUCSAC to help you answer these

For each challenge, use the squares in your Maths book to draw each question then write the answer. Remember that the shape must be divided equally into the number of parts shown by the denominator. Use a different coloured pencil to show the different fractions you are adding.

Mild: 2 + 1 = 3 + 2 = 7 + 3 = 4 4 6 6 12 12

Spicy: 4 + 1 + 6 = 3 + 2 + 5 = 12 12 12 15 15 15

Hot: 3 + 6 + 4 = 1 + 2 + 5 = 20 20 20 8 8 8

How else could you write the answer to the last question. If the numerator and denominator are the same, they are equal to ?

Top Tip – think about these questions

What numbers can you make? Do they have anything in common?Have you made 37 with a different number of numbers? How many? Do these numbers have anything in common? What do you notice about the numbers in the bags?

Make sure you write an explanation of your answer.
