A Word From Teacher
Good morning boys and girls,
I hope you all doing well? I hope everything went well for everyone last week. I know how strange it must feel for you all to do your school- work from home, but you are doing brilliantly. Keep up the good work. Do what you can and don’t worry about anything that is too tricky.
It has made my week talking to so many of you on the phone this week and for anyone I’ve missed I hope to catch you soon. There was so much news. And it made me smile.
Playing in the garden Walks to the beach and on scenic country roads Football in the garden Goats named Dave! Fun with dogs and pets Planting and greenhouses Painting silk scarves Journals of daily adventures Jumping on the trampoline Tricks on the trampoline Cycling Playing on go – karts
I wonder can you spot your news above?!

Parents, continued well done and thanks to you all. I will continue to stress each week that none of this is compulsory. Don’t put yourself under unnecessary pressure if it feels
like too much. You can pick and choose or maybe keep your emphasis on Maths, English and Irish. Whatever works for you is the right way. Remember to contact the school at [email protected] if you need further assistance with any of the work.
Some more things to remember for this week:
We begin our new class reader this week ‘The Wise Girl’. I have provided screenshots of the pages, but for anyone printing this pack it is also available as an ebook on CJ Fallon’s website, so no need to print those pages.
Please go to the English Support tab on the website for access to a Kahoot! Quiz for ‘The Wise Girl’ reader. It’s great fun!
I have attached the spelling sheet for this week. Use it in the same way as normal. P.E. continues to be part of each day’s timetable. Go to the Active School tab on the
website for lots of fun activities. Getting active each day is very important. Our Mental Maths Warm- Up for this week is on https://www.topmarks.co.uk/maths-
games/daily10 . Your child can select ‘manual’ option or a time- limit option for an extra challenge.
The children have their Mental Maths book home with them. Feel free to work through this each week in place of an online maths warm- up.
You will need to access Abair Liom resources this week again on https://www.folensonline.ie/registration/
It is a bank holiday on Monday of this week, but I have provided a list of activities if you would like to keep a structure to the week. Otherwise, enjoy a very well deserve break from school work.
The closing date for ‘We are Writers’ task is May 29th. You might like to put this task in, in place of a different lesson one of the days.
I hope all of your tasks go well for you this week. The answer sheet is available now on the website for anyone who wishes to correct work on a daily basis.
Ms. Keegan

It’s Mental Maths Warm- Up Time: https://www.topmarks.co.uk/maths-games/daily10
Level 2, addition , two- digit numbers , manual Tick when finished
Topic: This week we will be learning to add numbers within 99( with hidden tens)
Here is some very useful vocabulary for you. You can read these each day. ten, unit, place value, count, altogether, add, plus, equals, sign, sum, jump, forward, total, How many?, more, less, set, group, make, renaming, number story, number sentence
Let’s start our topic today with some revision of tens and units.
Activity 1: Watch this video: https://www.khanacademy.org/math/arithmetic/arith-review-add-subtract/arith-review-add-within-100a/v/adding-two-digit-numbers-without-
regrouping
Now try these addition sums.
Good work, well done!
Activity 2 : But what if there is a hidden ten in with the units?
7
Where does the tens heading go?
Where does the units heading go?
Start by adding the units column.
Then add the tens column.
In this example there are 14 units. 14= 10 + 4
So that means there is a hidden ten on the units’ side.
We need to take it out of the units and put it in the tens box.
So there were 2 sets of ten to start with, but now we have another set of ten. That’s 3 sets of ten and how many units are left over?
That’s right 4 units left over.
Now give these a go. Watch out for those sneaky hidden tens!!
Uh oh!! Look what I see? A sneaky, hidden ten in the units’ box. SNEAKY, SNEAKY!!
18 = 10 + 8
So take that set of ten and give it over to the tens’ box.
There were 6 sets of ten, but now we have one more set of ten. 6 + 1 more
8
So how many sets of ten are there now?
And how many units are left in the units’ box?
Amazing job!! Keep going.

TOPIC: FORCES
Design and make task (Optional of course!)
Wind creates a force and power that can move things by pushing.
We saw last week that we can move a kite can move through the air with the force of wind pushing it.
This week we are going to make a ‘sail- car’ or ‘land- yacht’ can can move with the force of wind. You can use a fan or just a windy day to test out your design. Think about your wheels and the surface you will let them roll on.
Experiment with different materials for the sail to see which catches the wind best.
Have fun and enjoy!

Yesterday , we did some revision of adding tens and units with no hidden tens. They were easy enough I hope?
We then started to learn about hidden tens and how to put them back in the right box!
This was our example.
When we move a ten from the units to the tens box we call it renaming. That makes sense doesn’t it, because we are renaming it as a ten instead of a unit!

Topic: Water in our local environment
Last week we studied the River Boyne and we learned how important rivers are for sports and for biodiversity. You learned new facts about otters that live in our rivers in Ireland.
Today, I want you to think about how we can protect all of the animals, plants and insects that rely on our waterways in Ireland.
Activity 1: Let’s remind ourselves about the importance of Biodiversity with this very short video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ErATB1aMiSU
Activity 2: Now we know how important it is to look after all of our species of insects, plants and animals in our environment, let’s think about how we can protect the animals, plants and insects in our waterways.
What do you think is the biggest threat to living things in our rivers? That’s right- pollution.
Today I want you to think of the different ways that our rivers can become polluted(dirty).
Try a brainstorm below by drawing or writing what you think. Afterwards watch the video to see how you did.

So today, let’s try to add tens and units where there is a hidden ten.
