Fact sheet

Effect on India10,749 casualties were confirmed dead, most of them in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. There are also 5,640 people missing, nearly all of them on the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.

Effect on IndonesiaIndonesia's Ministry of Health confirmed 131,028 deaths, mainly in the northern province Aceh of the island Sumatra. Some 37,000 people are missing.

Effect on MalaysiaDespite its proximity to the incident, Malaysia escaped the kind of damage that struck countries thousands of miles further away (most of its western coast is shielded by Sumatra). The number of deaths stands at 68 with 5 people missing.

Effect on the MaldivesIn the Maldives, 82 were killed and 26 reported missing and presumed dead.

Effect on MyanmarThe official death toll is 61.

Effect on Somalia176 people were confirmed dead, 136 were missing.

Effect on Sri LankaSri Lankan authorities report 31,229 confirmed deaths, and 4,093 people missing.

Effect on ThailandThe Thai government reports 5,395 confirmed deaths and 2,817 missing.

It is estimated that every person needs about 2 litres of water per day.

Food

In the regions affected by the Indonesian Tsunami rice is a staple part of the diet. The World Food Programme provides, on average, about 400 grams of rice per person, per day (for families, including children

and adults). That is intended for two meals that include other ingredients to ensure a minimum of 2,100 kilocalories per day.

Shelter

Large simple ridge tents are often used for shelter and vary in size. The number of people who would sleep overnight in one can also vary due to the size of families. However, the average number of people per tent for our work we will assume to be 8.
