ENGLISH LANGUAGE OVERVIEWThis comprehensive English Language and Literature Skills Course Outline will help students develop a mastery of reading, writing, grammar and language arts skills through literacy and informational reading thought out selections. Students are expected to read texts regularly, analyze texts, and cite evidence. Reading materials will include fiction, non-fiction and poetry. Student are expected to engage in responsive writing based on what they have read.

The 6-8 grade English/Language Arts course we will use provides a balance of reading, writing, speaking, listening and language skills.

The 6-8 grade Reading course teaches essential comprehension skills and strategies while students read closely and cite evidence from grade-level fiction and nonfiction to support an analysis of what the materials say.

Students develop a rich vocabulary of complex and sophisticated words and use them to speak and write more precisely and coherently.  

Students will work on improving skills necessary for formal presentations and develop a range of broadly useful oral communication and interpersonal skills.

Students will work together, express and listen carefully to ideas, integrate information from oral, visual, quantitative, and media sources, evaluate what they hear, use media and visual displays to help adapt speech to context and task.

The skills will include include arguments, informative/explanatory texts and narratives.  

Students are required to draw upon and write about evidence from literary and informational texts.

The students are required to come prepared to class every day.

They are expected to complete all class and homework assignments on time.

If they are absent, they are responsible for making up the work.

They are expected to participate in class.

Materials:

This year we are participating in a remote learning. Students will have access to Chromebooks and most of our work will be done through Zoom meetings( synchronous and asynchronous assignments).

Students will still be required to have a to notebook, pencils and highlighters.

COMPOSITION –WRITING SKILLS:Writing can be one of the most daunting skills for some students to learn. Over time, however, students of any skill level can learn to write effectively with the right practice and instruction. Students will have a set of different writing worksheets around specific areas like editing and proofing, writing conclusions, choosing topic sentences, and how to use transition words. Some helpful writing worksheets for writing prompts and some fun lined paper themes. Each worksheet available is aligned to common core standards and designed for grade levels Sixth to Eight.

Vocabulary Skills:Vocabulary is a fundamental learning concept but covers many different areas. You will have practice activities to help you improve your vocabulary skills. These will include homophones, prefixes, root words, shades of meaning, suffixes, synonyms and antonyms! They are designed around common core standards and cover a broad range of skill levels from Fifth through Eight Grade.

Grammar is a fundamental concept that helps students to gain valuable skills in reading comprehension and writing. I have provided grammar worksheets around topics like parts of speech, mechanics, parts of sentences, word usage, punctuation, and sentence structure. You will find practice activities for Sixth Grade through Eight Grade and these worksheets address specific aspects of common core and teach concepts to help you learn.

Reading Comprehension Skills:I have included a variety of reading passages that reinforce comprehension skills. These lesson activities across a variety of skill areas including cause and effect, context clues, literature, drawing conclusions, fact and opinion, main ideas, making inference and more and are common core standard based.

Spelling Pattern Skills: There are some pretty simple rules to follow for most words. The spelling worksheets included are to help you through some of the more difficult spelling patterns.

Spelling Rules:English words offer a challenge to writers. For every spelling rule, there is almost always an exception to the rule. Many times there are even exceptions to the exceptions! However you will learn to spell common words correctly, and the rules will give you good guidance.
