Dear Parents, Guardians and Children,

I hope every family enjoyed the Bank holiday weekend. This week is a short week. Our theme this week is Hansel and Gretel. I have made a general plan below of how we can link it into some of the subjects. Most people should have the story at home. If you do not have it, I’ll include a powerpoint version too.

Happy 6th Birthday Paige! She will celebrate on the 9th May.

If you have any tech issues or questions about the course work, feel free to email [email protected] .

I hope you all stay safe and well for the week ahead and I look forward to hearing from you.

Kind regards,

Aisling Rowe

New sound (oi ) as in foil, soil. This is a digraph (a combination of two letters representing one sound).

(a) Read the oi story and ask the following questions: Who has a boat? What happened the boat?

(b) Jolly Phonics songs: Play the song for the children and get them to do the actions and learn the words of the song. The song for /oi/ is at 11:06. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U2HYM9VXz9k&t=3s

Get your child to read the following words and they are only allowed say /oi/ not /o/ and /i/ separately! They will need a bit of help to decode. Stretch out the sounds with them cloud, gradually getting faster at sounding out the words.

(c) Get the child to form the letters with their finger in the air with their fingers, on the table, on the back of their hands, etc, before writing them on paper. If you had a whiteboard or a chalkboard, they could practice on those first and write a word that has /oi/ in it. i.e. “soil, foil, join”. Children could make the letters with playdough, in sand/flour, on sand paper, in rice, with lollipop sticks/match sticks, anything that’s sensory etc. Spend the week on the sound /oi/ and revise the other sounds covered. Get children to draw pictures of things starting with /oi/, label them and write simple sentences. You could have the words written on a separate page and the children could copy them.
