Obadiah 1:1-21 (KJV) 1  The vision of Obadiah. Thus saith the Lord GOD concerning Edom; We have heard a rumour from the LORD, and an ambassador is sent among the heathen, Arise ye, and let us rise up against her in battle.

Obadiah is the prophet who prophesied against Edom, which had rejoiced at the Babylonian victories in Jerusalem in 597 BC. Obadiah described the behavior of the Edomites in his prophecy, the shortest book in the OT, and predicted God's judgment on Edom. The Complete Book of Who's Who in the Bible. There are 13 Obadiah’s mentioned in the Bible.

Edom, meaning red, and it comes from the twin brother of Jacob. Genesis 25:25 (KJV) 25 And the first came out red, all over like an hairy garment; and they called his name Esau.

Edom was the name of the place where the Edomites had settled. And in the book of Jeremiah we see a reference of this country, Edom, being made desolate.

Jeremiah 49:7-22 (KJV) 7  Concerning Edom, thus saith the LORD of hosts; Is wisdom no more in Teman? is counsel perished from the prudent? is their wisdom vanished? 8  Flee ye, turn back, dwell deep, O inhabitants of Dedan; for I will bring the calamity of Esau upon him, the time that I will visit him. 9  If grapegatherers come to thee, would they not leave some gleaning grapes? if thieves by night, they will destroy till they have enough. 10  But I have made Esau bare, I have uncovered his secret places, and he shall not be able to hide himself: his seed is spoiled, and his brethren, and his neighbours, and he is not. 11  Leave thy fatherless children, I will preserve them alive; and let thy widows trust in me. 12  For thus saith the LORD; Behold, they whose judgment was not to drink of the cup have assuredly drunken; and art thou he that shall altogether go unpunished? thou shalt not go unpunished, but thou shalt surely drink of it. 13  For I have sworn by myself, saith the LORD, that Bozrah shall become a desolation, a reproach, a waste, and a curse; and all the cities thereof shall be perpetual wastes. 14  I have heard a rumour from the LORD, and an ambassador is sent unto the heathen, saying, Gather ye together, and come against her, and rise up to the battle. 15  For, lo, I will make thee small among the heathen, and despised among men. 16  Thy terribleness hath deceived thee, and the pride of thine heart, O thou that dwellest in the clefts of the rock, that holdest the height of the hill: though thou shouldest make thy nest as high as the eagle, I will bring thee down from thence, saith the LORD. 17  Also Edom shall be a desolation: every one that goeth by it shall be astonished, and shall hiss at all the plagues thereof. 18  As in the overthrow of Sodom and Gomorrah and the neighbour cities thereof, saith the LORD, no man shall abide there, neither shall a son of man dwell in it. 19  Behold, he shall come up like a lion from the swelling of Jordan against the habitation of the strong: but I will suddenly make him run away from her: and who is a chosen man, that I may appoint over her? for who is like me? and who will appoint me the time? and who is that shepherd that will stand before me? 20  Therefore hear the counsel of the LORD, that he hath taken against Edom; and his purposes,

that he hath purposed against the inhabitants of Teman: Surely the least of the flock shall draw them out: surely he shall make their habitations desolate with them. 21  The earth is moved at the noise of their fall, at the cry the noise thereof was heard in the Red sea. 22  Behold, he shall come up and fly as the eagle, and spread his wings over Bozrah: and at that day shall the heart of the mighty men of Edom be as the heart of a woman in her pangs.

2  Behold, I have made thee small among the heathen: thou art greatly despised.

Edom, a country that was descended through Esau, and the Israelites were from Esau’s brother Jacob. Edom was a small nation but had a lot of arrogance and pride.

Genesis 36:1 (KJV) 1  Now these are the generations of Esau, who is Edom. Genesis 36:8 (KJV) 8 Thus dwelt Esau in mount Seir: Esau is Edom.

Genesis 36:19 (KJV) 19 These are the sons of Esau, who is Edom, and these are their dukes.

Numbers 20:14-21 (KJV) 14  And Moses sent messengers from Kadesh unto the king of Edom, Thus saith thy brother Israel, Thou knowest all the travail that hath befallen us: 15  How our fathers went down into Egypt, and we have dwelt in Egypt a long time; and the Egyptians vexed us, and our fathers: 16  And when we cried unto the LORD, he heard our voice, and sent an angel, and hath brought us forth out of Egypt: and, behold, we are in Kadesh, a city in the uttermost of thy border: 17  Let us pass, I pray thee, through thy country: we will not pass through the fields, or through the vineyards, neither will we drink of the water of the wells: we will go by the king's high way, we will not turn to the right hand nor to the left, until we have passed thy borders. 18  And Edom said unto him, Thou shalt not pass by me, lest I come out against thee with the sword. 19  And the children of Israel said unto him, We will go by the high way: and if I and my cattle drink of thy water, then I will pay for it: I will only, without doing any thing else, go through on my feet. 20  And he said, Thou shalt not go through. And Edom came out against him with much people, and with a strong hand. 21  Thus Edom refused to give Israel passage through his border: wherefore Israel turned away from him.

So Edpm and Israel had some serious issues. So we see from the scriptures that there was a family squabble going on between cousins. Edom, had on numerous occasions turned away from Israel.

The enemies of GodPsalm 83:1-8 (KJV) 1

Keep not thou silence, O God: hold not thy peace, and be not still, O God.

2  For, lo, thine enemies make a tumult: and they that hate thee have lifted up the head. 3  They have taken crafty counsel against thy people, and consulted against thy hidden ones. 4  They have said, Come, and let us cut them off from being a nation; that the name of Israel may be no more in remembrance. 5  For they have consulted together with one consent: they are confederate against thee: 6  The tabernacles of Edom, and the Ishmaelites; of Moab, and the Hagarenes; 7  Gebal, and Ammon, and Amalek; the Philistines with the inhabitants of Tyre; 8  Assur also is joined with them: they have holpen the children of Lot. Selah.

3  The pride of thine heart hath deceived thee, thou that dwellest in the clefts of the rock, whose habitation is high; that saith in his heart, Who shall bring me down to the ground?

Edom was or had a haughty spirit and believed that they could not be destroyed. They believed that they were invincible, as a matter of fact the city of Sela in Edom (which literally means rock). And according to some scholars this may be what was mentioned in 2 Kings and also 2 Chronicles.

2 Kings 14:7 (KJV) 7 He slew of Edom in the valley of salt ten thousand, and took Selah by war, and called the name of it Joktheel unto this day.

2 Chronicles 25:12 (KJV) 12 And other ten thousand left alive did the children of Judah carry away captive, and brought them unto the top of the rock, and cast them down from the top of the rock, that they all were broken in pieces.

However, Edom believed that since they were on the cliffs, and on the top of the cliffs that their houses as well as their culture would never fail. However, because of the sin of disobedience and their hatred for their cousins, Israel, God would cast them down and destroy their way of life.

4  Though thou exalt thyself as the eagle, and though thou set thy nest among the stars, thence will I bring thee down, saith the LORD.

Even though the people, government, and culture of Edom set themselves up higher than an eagle. An eagle often is used to symbolize strength, speed, or swiftness.

Luke 10:17-18 (KJV) 17  And the seventy returned again with joy, saying, Lord, even the devils are subject unto us through thy name. 18  And he said unto them, I beheld Satan as lightning fall from heaven. Even if the nation of Edom was built literally in the stars they were not “too big too fail.” But this scripture is to be looked at as they had the high ground, and as any solider or military strategistwill say, if an army holds the high ground, they are at a significant advantage in the battle. However, having God for you in the valley or against you on the mountain will quickly decide the outcome of the battle.

5  If thieves came to thee, if robbers by night, (how art thou cut off!) would they not have stolen till they had enough? if the grapegatherers came to thee, would they not leave some grapes?

Jeremiah 49:9-10 (KJV) 9 If grapegatherers come to thee, would they not leave some gleaning grapes? if thieves by night, they will destroy till they have enough. 10 But I have made Esau bare, I have uncovered his secret places, and he shall not be able to hide himself: his seed is spoiled, and his brethren, and his neighbours, and he is not.

Thieves and grape gatherers will not take everything there is. There will always be something left. But when God makes a start, He finishes it totally. God has warned, through the prophet, Obadiah, that nothing will be left in the land of Edom. They will be destroyed completely. Hebrews 10:31 (KJV) 31 It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God.

6  How are the things of Esau searched out! how are his hidden things sought up!

The valuables and those things that are precious will not be left. God will seek out those things hidden, and those items will be taken as well. Nothing valuable or for that matter nothing at all will be left

7  All the men of thy confederacy have brought thee even to the border: the men that were at peace with thee have deceived thee, and prevailed against thee; they that eat thy bread have laid a wound under thee: there is none understanding in him.

Your allies, the nations that have been friendly toward you, your so-called friends are all one by one going to betray you and desert you. They will even be instrumental and have a hand in your captivity. They will force you to your borders, they will unarm you and take you to your enemies. They are going to ensnare you and lay a trap for you. You will not stand; you will not be able to resist.

Obadiah 1:7 (NET1) 7  All your allies will force you from your homeland! Your treaty partners will deceive you and overpower you. Your trusted friends will set an ambush for you that will take you by surprise! You will not see it coming, but you have been warned.

8  Shall I not in that day, saith the LORD, even destroy the wise men out of Edom, and understanding out of the mount of Esau?

Your earthly wisdom will not save you. Your intelligence, cunning, craftiness, none of that will have any effect. You are going to be destroyed. No one old, young, man, woman, or child will be left. When God starts something, it is always finished. No matter who you are or what your status is in life. God will finish what He starts, and no one can stop Him.

9  And thy mighty men, O Teman, shall be dismayed, to the end that every one of the mount of Esau may be cut off by slaughter.

Teman, was a son Eliphaz and a grandson of Esau. Genesis 36:11 (KJV) 11 And the sons of Eliphaz were Teman, Omar, Zepho, and Gatam, and Kenaz. Genesis 36:10 (KJV) 10 These are the names of Esau's sons; Eliphaz the son of Adah the wife of Esau, Reuel the son of Bashemath the wife of Esau.

It is also the name of a city in Edom. However, most Bible scholars believe that the use of Teman herein this scripture refers to all of Edom, not just a city. In Jeremiah we read Jeremiah 49:7 (KJV)

7  Concerning Edom, thus saith the LORD of hosts; Is wisdom no more in Teman? is counsel perished from the prudent? is their wisdom vanished? It certainly could just mean a city, but it is more plausible to believe that it means the entire land of Edom. The military in one city, or the loss of the military in one city, would not allow an enemy nation to take captive all the land. It is with this logic, that Teman is considered to represent all of Edom. Once the military leaders fall in the entirety of Edom, then the land can be laid waste. The valuables that are hidden can be found and the nation ransacked.

10  For thy violence against thy brother Jacob shame shall cover thee, and thou shalt be cut off for ever.

In Amos we read a little of the crime that Edom committed against Israel.

11  In the day that thou stoodest on the other side, in the day that the strangers carried away captive his forces, and foreigners entered into his gates, and cast lots upon Jerusalem, even thou wast as one of them.

Amos 1:11-12 (KJV) 11 Thus saith the LORD; For three transgressions of Edom, and for four, I will not turn away the punishment thereof; because he did pursue his brother with the sword, and did cast off all pity, and his anger did tear perpetually, and he kept his wrath for ever: 12 But I will send a fire upon Teman, which shall devour the palaces of Bozrah.

12  But thou shouldest not have looked on the day of thy brother in the day that he became a stranger; neither shouldest thou have rejoiced over the children of Judah in the day of their destruction; neither shouldest thou have spoken proudly in the day of distress.

In the corporate world, the saying , “Kick them why they are down” is a very real and troubling saying. Too often, this saying is exactly what happens. When someone is knocked down or has fallen, it is too often the fellow employees that continue to add to the weight of that one that is down. A friend, once said, the Christian army is the only army in the world that kills its wounded. We are so quick to jump on the “bandwagon” when a Christian makes a mistake or succumbs to temptation, fellow Christians are quick to point out the flaws, spread rumors, and even assassinate the character of the fallen. Especially if that Christian, is a well-known evangelist or someone of prominence in the faith. In

Obadiah verse 12, God tells the Edomites, that because they should not have looked on the calamity of Israel and Judah with arrogance; they should not have rejoiced at the calamity that came to their kinsmen. The Edomite should not have “kicked” the Judahites and Israelites when they were down. They should not have celebrated the fall of their neighbors. Another friend, always says, “God, does not like ugly” and he is correct. We often live at least two separate lives. The life we live in corporate is not always the life we live in church. We secretly rejoice when someone falls “from Grace”, but if it had been us, we would want someone to commensurate with. We like to laugh at the problems of others, and in a roar state how it could, “never happen to us”. Oh, the arrogance of some, just as the arrogance of those living in Edom. How quickly the tables can turn.

13  Thou shouldest not have entered into the gate of my people in the day of their calamity; yea, thou shouldest not have looked on their affliction in the day of their calamity, nor have laid hands on their substance in the day of their calamity;

Instead of helping the fallen the Edomites were spectators to the fall of Judah and Israel. When they could have helped, they stood by and did nothing, they watched, not with sorrow, but with gladness. If they lived in todays times, they would have video tapped the events and put them on the internet and social media. They would have cheered on the bullies or gang as they brought torment to those that were being bullied or tormented. We see this a lot now, videos of fights, bullying, and worse rape and murder, brought to us, not by concerned citizens, but as an unruly mob, that get a thrill and kick out of videotaping violence and unspeakable acts. By no action they empowered the enemy(ies) to do whatever they wanted. They visited the cities out of curiosity and a morbid sense of excitement to watch Israel and Judah fall.

14  Neither shouldest thou have stood in the crossway, to cut off those of his that did escape; neither shouldest thou have delivered up those of his that did remain in the day of distress.

Not only did the Edomites watch, but they participated in the capture of those trying to flee from Judah and Israel. They prevented the escape of some, and those that came seeking refuge, they turned in. Much like the fine neighbors in Germany in the 1940’s that turned in the Jewish people to the Nazis. Some I am sure did it out of fear, but most out of hatred and jealousy of the Jewish people. Racism and racist, do not need to hate, they just hate irrationally. Just as the African American was hunted down by some in the Civil War (that was not so Civil), and the Japanese Americans were interned in Concentration camps in America during World War II. The Chinese in America, that was used for cheap labor to build the mighty railroad, and the Native American Indian so the land could be settled, the people of Judah and Israel were hunted down and betrayed by those, the Edomites, that they believed were friends.

15  For the day of the LORD is near upon all the heathen: as thou hast done, it shall be done unto thee: thy reward shall return upon thine own head.

What goes around, comes around. The people of Edom were going to pay for their insolence, their arrogance, and their betrayal. They were going to fall; they would be overtaken by their enemies, and there would be no grace and no quarters given (or stated in modern verbiage, take no prisoners. Kill everyone). Since they gave no mercy, no mercy would be given them. Since they had no compassion, no compassion would be bestowed on them. Since they provided betrayal; betrayal they would receive.

16  For as ye have drunk upon my holy mountain, so shall all the heathen drink continually, yea, they shall drink, and they shall swallow down, and they shall be as though they had not been.

Obadiah 1:16 (CJB) (Complete Jewish Bible)16 For just as you have drunk on my holy mountain, so will all the nations drink in turn; yes, they will drink and gulp it down and be as if they had never existed.

Looking at this verse through recent times eyes, we do not need to look back any further than the German Nazis. They rose to power using violence, fear, war, and death. And jus a few short years later, their nation was ruined, as WWII, raged in the streets and overhead. This war destroyed everything and everybody. Hatred started the war, but a unified front ended the war. But at a terrible cost, for all sides. Now, the Nazis party of the Third Reich or Realm, is nothing more than a footnote in History books. Now evil still exists and will until Christ comes back, but the utopian world that the madman Adolph Hitler dreamed of, became a living nightmare to those that tried to force its birth on the war through violence.

Every nation, that tries through force, will and must drink from the cup of wrath in God’s hand. Once God starts the process of destroying, God finishes the task. And often that nation is no longer remembered except for its fall.

17  But upon mount Zion shall be deliverance, and there shall be holiness; and the house of Jacob shall possess their possessions.

Refuges will find sanctuary, peace a dwelling place on Mount Zion and the descendants of Jacob will overthrow those that won the victory over Jacob.

Isaiah 4:2-3 (KJV) 2 In that day shall the branch of the LORD be beautiful and glorious, and the fruit of the earth shall be excellent and comely for them that are escaped of Israel. 3 And it shall come to pass, that he that is left in Zion, and he that remaineth in Jerusalem, shall be called holy, even every one that is written among the living in Jerusalem:

Joel 2:32 (KJV) 32 And it shall come to pass, that whosoever shall call on the name of the LORD shall be delivered: for in mount Zion and in Jerusalem shall be deliverance, as the LORD hath said, and in the remnant whom the LORD shall call.

Isaiah 66:20 (KJV) 20 And they shall bring all your brethren for an offering unto the LORD out of all nations upon horses, and in chariots, and in litters, and upon mules, and upon swift beasts, to my holy mountain Jerusalem, saith the LORD, as the children of Israel bring an offering in a clean vessel into the house of the LORD.

Isaiah 14:1-2 (KJV) 1 For the LORD will have mercy on Jacob, and will yet choose Israel, and set them in their own land: and the strangers shall be joined with them, and they shall cleave to the house of Jacob. 2 And the people shall take them, and bring them to their place: and the house of Israel shall possess them in the land of the LORD for servants and handmaids: and they shall take them captives, whose captives they were; and they shall rule over their oppressors.

Amos 9:11-15 (KJV) 11 In that day will I raise up the tabernacle of David that is fallen, and close up the breaches thereof; and I will raise up his ruins, and I will build it as in the days of old: 12 That they may possess the remnant of Edom, and of all the heathen, which are called by my name, saith the LORD that doeth this. 13 Behold, the days come, saith the LORD, that the plowman shall overtake the reaper, and the treader of grapes him that soweth seed; and the mountains shall drop sweet wine, and all the hills shall melt. 14 And I will bring again the captivity of my people of Israel, and they shall build the waste cities, and inhabit them; and they shall plant vineyards, and drink the wine thereof; they shall also make gardens, and eat the fruit of them. 15  And I will plant them upon their land, and they shall no more be pulled up out of their land which I have given them, saith the LORD thy God. 36:2-5 (KJV) 2 Thus saith the Lord GOD; Because the enemy hath said against you, Aha, even the ancient high

places are ours in possession: 3 Therefore prophesy and say, Thus saith the Lord GOD; Because they have made you desolate, and swallowed you up on every side, that ye might be a possession unto the residue of the heathen, and ye are taken up in the lips of talkers, and are an infamy of the people: 4 Therefore, ye mountains of Israel, hear the word of the Lord GOD; Thus saith the Lord GOD to the mountains, and to the hills, to the rivers, and to the valleys, to the desolate wastes, and to the cities that are forsaken, which became a prey and derision to the residue of the heathen that are round about; 5 Therefore thus saith the Lord GOD; Surely in the fire of my jealousy have I spoken against the residue of the heathen, and against all Idumea, which have appointed my land into their possession with the joy of all their heart, with despiteful minds, to cast it out for a prey.

18  And the house of Jacob shall be a fire, and the house of Joseph a flame, and the house of Esau for stubble, and they shall kindle in them, and devour them; and there shall not be any remaining of the house of Esau; for the LORD hath spoken it.

Once the children of Judah and Israel come from captivity, they will destroy the nation of Esau (Idumea). Just as fire and flames destroy and burn up stubble the nation of Esau (Edom) will no longer be around.

Isaiah 5:24 (KJV) 24 Therefore as the fire devoureth the stubble, and the flame consumeth the chaff, so their root shall be as rottenness, and their blossom shall go up as dust: because they have cast away the law of the LORD of hosts, and despised the word of the Holy One of Israel.

Isaiah 9:18-19 (KJV) 18 For wickedness burneth as the fire: it shall devour the briers and thorns, and shall kindle in the thickets of the forest, and they shall mount up like the lifting up of smoke. 19 Through the wrath of the LORD of hosts is the land darkened, and the people shall be as the fuel of the fire: no man shall spare his brother.

Amos 1:12 (KJV) 12 But I will send a fire upon Teman, which shall devour the palaces of Bozrah.

Zechariah 12:6 (KJV) 6 In that day will I make the governors of Judah like an hearth of fire among the wood, and like a torch of fire in a sheaf; and they shall devour all the people round about, on the right hand and on the left: and Jerusalem shall be inhabited again in her own place, even in Jerusalem.

Jeremiah 11:23 (KJV) 23 And there shall be no remnant of them: for I will bring evil upon the men of Anathoth, even the year of their visitation.

19  And they of the south shall possess the mount of Esau; and they of the plain the Philistines: and they shall possess the fields of Ephraim, and the fields of Samaria: and Benjamin shall possess Gilead.

The Jews that are in the South, the Negev (arid region spanning the southern part of Israel and occupying almost half of Palestine west of the Jordan River and about 60 percent of Israeli territory under the 1949–67 boundaries.) will reoccupy the mount of Esau (Edom), the plains of the Philistines, and the fields in Samaria. The tribe of Benjamin will reoccupy Gilead.

Isaiah 11:14 (KJV) 14 But they shall fly upon the shoulders of the Philistines toward the west; they shall spoil them of the east together: they shall lay their hand upon Edom and Moab; and the children of Ammon shall obey them.

Amos 9:11-12 (KJV) 11  In that day will I raise up the tabernacle of David that is fallen, and close up the breaches thereof; and I will raise up his ruins, and I will build it as in the days of old: 12  That they may possess the remnant of Edom, and of all the heathen, which are called by my name, saith the LORD that doeth this. Jeremiah 31:5 (KJV) 5 Thou shalt yet plant vines upon the mountains of Samaria: the planters shall plant, and shall eat them as common things.

Jeremiah 32:44 (KJV) 44 Men shall buy fields for money, and subscribe evidences, and seal them, and take witnesses in the land of Benjamin, and in the places about Jerusalem, and in the cities of Judah, and in the cities of the mountains, and in the cities of the valley, and in the cities of the south: for I will cause their captivity to return, saith the LORD.

20  And the captivity of this host of the children of Israel shall possess that of the Canaanites, even unto Zarephath; and the captivity of Jerusalem, which is in Sepharad, shall possess the cities of the south.

Obadiah 1:20 (NET1) 20 The exiles of this fortress of the people of Israel will take possession of what belongs to the people of Canaan, as far as Zarephath, and the exiles of Jerusalem who are in Sepharad will take possession of the towns of the Negev. 1 Kings 17:9-10 (KJV) 9 Arise, get thee to Zarephath, which belongeth to Zidon, and dwell there: behold, I have commanded a widow woman there to sustain thee. 10 So he arose and went to Zarephath. And when he came to the gate of the city, behold, the widow woman was there gathering of sticks: and he called to her, and said, Fetch me, I pray thee, a little water in a vessel, that I may drink.
