Peggy Moxley Hauser-Marsh Hello Class of ’68! Can’t believe what seems like yesterday has been 50 years. I remember well Mrs. Lorraine McKinney trying to make sure all of us future nurses passed chemistry. In her “own” special way we all did pass! And for years after graduation whenever we met, Mrs. McKinney never failed to ask me about my nursing career and always showed as much interest then as she did in chem class. She cared about each and every one of us, encouraging us to do our best and to seek advancement. She was full of energy and inspired us not only in learning in her classroom but living life to the fullest. I graduated from Forsyth Nursing School in 1972 and retired from nursing in 2011. I worked primarily in Public Health and Home Health. I worked as a staff nurse, a personal care coordinator/supervisor and later as an operation manager. I was also a medical coder and was certified in psychiatric nursing. Of all the years I worked in nursing, 22 of these were at Northern Hospital of Surry County. Now, as a total career change, I assist my husband in several businesses. He is an electrical contractor and owns Marsh Electric. We also have a home décor and gift store called “Something Different on Main” located on Main Street in Mt. Airy. Additionally, we have local commercial and rental properties. My husband is the current President of the Downtown Business Association so we are quite involved in many of the downtown events (festivals, cruise-ins and parades…).

Cub attended Appalachian and later enlisted in the Coast Guard. We were married while he was still in service and I was a senior in nursing school. We were married 28 years and had two sons, Bucky (Clay) and David. Bucky has two daughters. David has two sons. My children’s godmother and our precious family friend is our classmate, Marian Kirkman O’Neal.Sadly Cub passed away unexpectedly in 1998 in an accident. Six years later I married my husband Phil Marsh. Phil has two children so we now have a blended

family of three sons, one daughter and 12 grandchildren. Phil and I have known each other since childhood. I have always lived in Mount Airy. Cub and I lived near town. He was employed as plant manager at Dixie Concrete. Phil and I lived on a quarter horse farm in Beulah until we moved to Renfro Lofts where we shared many good times with our neighbors, Jay and Gray Simmons Vogler. After 12 years at the Lofts we remodeled my mother’s home place in the Pine Ridge area and moved there 2 years ago. It is still a work in progress. My mother is still living alone and in good health at 90 years old. My father passed away 8 years ago. My sister, Lynn, is doing well. She and her husband, Barry Bickerstaff, also live in Mt. Airy. Of my many blessings, I cherish the friendships I made throughout my school years and with whom I still remain in contact. Some of these have been my friends since grade school and before. I can’t imagine my life’s journey without them. And last but not least, let’s remember the oldies sounds of the 60’s and our favorite DJ on the local Mount Airy radio station, Sugar Bear (better known as Robert Woodson). Those golden oldies are dear to my heart and are still played regularly from Mount Airy’s own radio station 1300 AM now heard “worldwide” online at wsyd1300.com.
