THE WAGES OF RELIGIOUS HYPOCRISY.

“Be careful not to practice your righteousness in front of other to be seen by them. If you do, you will have no reward from your Father in heaven. : So when you give to the needy, do not announce it with trumpets, as the hypocrites do in the Synagogues and on the Street to be honoured by others.’ Matthew 6:1-2.

Jesus Christ during His earthly ministry had a running battle with the Pharisee because of their way of life charactized by hypocrisy. He openly condemned them and taught that believers should eschew their way of life (Mark 8:15), particularly in these end times when liberalism has been enthroned over and above Godliness.

Wikipedia entry defines Hypocrisy as “the contrivance of a false appearance of virtue or goodness, while concealing real character or helinations, especially with respect to religious and moral beliefs.” In other words Hypocrisy is pretence – a false impression, a false claim or an attempt to make a falsehood appear true. These are two forms hypocrisy can take: that of professing belief in something and then acting in a manner contrary to that belief, and that of looking down on others when we ourselves are flawed. The Bible says – Why do you look at the speck of sawdust in your brother’s eye and pay no attention to the plank in your own eye? How can you say to your brother, “let me take the speck out of your eye, when all the time these is a plank in your own eye, and then you will see clearly to

remove the speck from your brother’s eye.” Matthew 7:3-5

Descriptively an hypocrite may be known by the fact that his speech and his actions are contrary to one another. As Jesus said, “they say, and they do not.” Whenever he does right it is that he may be seen of men. He sounds a trumpet before his alms and chooses the coiners of the streets for his prayers (Matthew 6:1ff). To him virtue in the dark is almost a vice, he can never detect any beauty in virtue, unless he has a thousand eyes to look upon him and then he is something indeed Hypocrite love titles, and honours, and respect from men. The Pharisee was never so happy as when he was called Rabbi, he never felt himself so great as when he was stuck up in the highest seat in the Synagogue. An hypocrite may look righteous on the outside, but it is a facade.

The Bible calls hypocrisy a sin, hence the admonition to shun it. The prophet Isaiah condemned the hypocrisy of his days.” The Lord says. ‘These people come near to me with their mouth and honour me; their worship of me is made up only of rules taught by men” (Isaiah 29:13). Centuries later, Jesus quoted this verse, aiming the same condemnation at the religious leaders of his days (Matthew 15:8-9). In the same vein we are being reminded today that Hypocrisy is evil and should not be found amongst believers. The Church is the pillar of truth in the world. We as believers must be as straight as the ruler setting standard for living. Our “No must be no and yes be yes.” What we are in the open is what we should be behind the scene when no one sees us. The Lord in Ezekiel 8 condemns the heinous crimes of the Prophets and Elders of Israel who behind the scene penetrate all forms of wickedness in His Holy Temple. He will not take kindly to any form of hypocrisy. He will judge rightly.

Let us take heed to ourselves and live right in all that we do. As children of God, we are called to strive for holiness (I Pet. 1:16). We are to” hate what is evil’ and ‘cling to what is good” (Romans 12:9). We should never imply an acceptance of sin, especially in our own lives. All we do should be consistent with what we believe and who we

are in Christ. Play acting is meant for the stage, not for real life in Christ. Have a Blessed Week.
