Have you ever been to Madrid before? Well now you can go! In this WebQuest you will plan a 5 day trip to Madrid using the Web and other sources. What sights will you see? Where will you stay? What will you do?

Your rich Tio Carlos lives in Madrid and gave you an all expense paid 5 day trip to Madrid for your birthday. He will pay for the trip but you are responsible for all the details; where you will visit, where you will stay, etc. You will be creating 3 items.

1. You will create a PowerPoint presentation with photos of all your tourist destinations and your hotel(s).

2. You will write a small summary in Word describing the tourist attractions you will visit, the restaurants where you will eat and the hotels where you will stay and why you chose them.

3. You will use Excel to create your itinerary with a breakdown of what you will do for the 5 days.

1. First you will research your hotel(s). Pick any travel dates you want but you only have 5 days. Use any of the following website to pick your hotels. Remember, price is not a factor so choose the most extravagant hotels if you want! (You must choose a minimum of 3 different hotelswww.expedia.comwww.priceline.comwww.orbitz.comwww.travelocity.com

2. Find and research any attractions you will want to visit. Keep track of where you want to go because you will be planning your itinerary. Also, save pictures of your desired destinations because you will need them for your PowerPoint. (You must have at least 2 planned activities per day of your trip, so 10 total activities)

3. Use Excel to create a spreadsheet itinerary. It should include the following:-Travel dates-Hotel accommodations (At least 3!)- Tourist attractions you will visit (Museums, galleries, etc...)-Where you will be eating if it’s anywhere special

4. Now that you have your itinerary, use PowerPoint to create a visual presentation of your trip. Include hotels, attractions and restaurants.

5. Use Word to create a verbal summary of your trip. Everything you write should be in Spanish. Tell me why you chose your attractions, hotels and restaurants and give any interesting history of locations you intend to visit.

This lesson simply originated from my love of Spain. I wanted students to learn about and explore Madrid as much as they can from a classroom standpoint.

The lesson is about planning an imaginary trip to Madrid where students must decide where they want to stay and what they want to visit. They also have to describe the history of the locations they will be visiting.

This lesson is what I perceived to be at about Spanish 2 level. However the lesson could easily be adapted to lower and higher levels. By adding or reducing the amount of Spanish that the student needs to use you can change the level of the WebQuest.

Learners will need to be familiar with PowerPoint, Excel and Word. They will also need to be familiar with searching the internet.

This lesson is pretty simple to implement. All you need is some time in your computer lab to make sure that every student has access to the internet, Excel, PowerPoint and Word.

This WebQuest model is best suited for learners who can navigate the Web on their own and can read the kinds of material commonly found on the Web. We can stretch the format to reach several different levels of Spanish speakers by varying the difficultly of the assignments. To reach a higher level class I would put the entire assignment in Spanish and require that all the material that the students turn in be in Spanish as well.

Depending on the maturity level of your class, you should be able to just let your class work on their own. I would allow approximately 2-3 class periods for the kids to complete the assignment.

I think this WebQuest is a great way to blend many different technologies together while teaching students about the city of Madrid. They have to use internet resources to research hotels and attractions and then take that information and turn it into something meaningful. This WebQuest is also great because it uses PowerPoint, Excel and Word so it familiarizes students with these programs as well.
