Weather Forecast for December 9 – 11, 2016

COLD! COLD! COLD!

Be Prepared!

As of December 6, 2016 Daytime high temperatures are forecast to be 39 to 42°F (4 to 5°C). Nighttime low temperatures are forecast to be 23 to 27°F (-5 to -3°C). Check www.weather.com or your local TV/Radio News for up to the minute weather

forecasts before departing for the campout. Plan to wear and bring appropriate daytime and nighttime attire to ensure proper

warmth during the event (see below). Campers must bring a suitable sleep system (a properly rated sleeping bag and a

sleeping pad/mattress to insulate your body from the cold ground are required). Protect yourself from hypothermia!

Dressing for Cold Weather

During cold weather, wear clothes that hold in body heat, while allowing body moisture to escape. If you have ever worn a waterproof slicker while hiking, you know how you can quickly become soaked with sweat. Then, when you rest, the sweat becomes cold and clammy and you begin to lose body heat. Under cold weather conditions, this can become serious. Wool clothing has generally been considered the best for cold and wet conditions. It does what we need it to do, it lets our body moisture escape, while keeping our body heat in. Even when wet, wool does a better job of keeping you warmer than cotton. Layers of clothing are usually preferred for cold-weather activities. Several thinner garments insulate the body better than one bulky coat, trapping dead air between the layers. An advantage of layering is that you can remove a layer if the weather warms or you become too hot. A set of fishnet-type long johns (or better yet, suitable “base layer” pants), a wool shirt, and a medium weight will jacket is effective layering for cold weather. Even the best wool clothing alone will not protect you for long if the weather is wet, windy, and cold. A wind-resistant, water-repellent jacket must be worn over the other clothing. On the market today are several kinds of rain gear that actually breathe, allowing perspiration to evaporate while still keeping the rain out. Jackets, pants, gloves and head-gear are made from this material. Fairly expensive, it is much better than old-fashioned slickers and plastic rain coats. You can wear the best clothing money can buy, but if you don’t have a good head covering you could be in trouble. In cold weather, a great deal of body heat can be lost through the head, so always wear a hat, cap or other head covering appropriate to the weather and the activity.

NOTE: Water may be turned off in the camping sites, so plans should be made to bring water required for the weekend.

Safety & Emergency Procedures Tornado

If you hear or see a tornado coming, warn others & take cover right away If you're in a building, go to the middle of the lowest level away from windows

(bathroom or closet if possible) Get under something sturdy, such as a heavy table, hold on & stay there until the

danger has passed Use your other arm & hand to protect your head & neck from debris If there is no building nearby, lie flat in a low spot & use your arms & hands to protect

your head Lightning

The safest place to be during a lightning storm is inside a relatively large, fully enclosed building

Avoid bodies of water, open areas, high ground, tall objects (trees, light poles), small shelters in open areas, & metal objects

If you are outdoors & lightning is in the immediate area, crouch down with feet close together, keep your head down, & cover your ears to minimize hearing damage from thunder

Stay at least 100 feet away from other individuals in the area to prevent bolts from jumping from person to person

Injuries

Scouts treat minor injuries using their individual first aid kit

For serious injuries & hurry cases, Scouts perform immediate aid & call for assistance with three short whistle blasts

The first Scouters to arrive on the scene provides additional immediate aid as required, & determines whether medical evacuation is required by ambulance (911) or troop vehicle

For Prince William Forest Park, the nearest hospital emergency room is Sentara Hospital

Hospital Address Phone Miles
