of critical thinking to accomplish one well-written instructional objective.

Page 4: Web based activities and critical thinking

Using websites: ELT vs Authentic websites√ ELT websites provide lots of content that our learners can use.

√ They provide valuable opportunities for more controlled practice.

√ They are a great help for learners who need to brush up on certain aspects of the language.

√ They are often used for homework.

Using websites: Authentic websites pros and

consХ Students will find them too difficult.

Х It takes too much time.

√ Authentic websites can be chosen to fit your students’ interests.

√ They provide an opportunity to work with “total comprehension”.

√ Their use fosters independent learning.

Writing objectivesTo write effective objectives you could use the ABCD model which include the following parts:

Part Description Example

A

AUDIENCE

Who is your audience?

Who is performing the action?

Students will be able to create a 3-minute clothing commercial using adjectives to describe materials from a list given in class.

B

BEHAVIOUR

Behaviours always use a verb or action wordSometimes you will describe the product or the result of the behaviour? What will the student be able to do?

Students will be able to create a 3-minute clothing commercial using adjectives to describe materials from a list given in class.

C

CONDITION

Give the conditions in which performance will occurHow will the student accomplish the task? What information is given?

Students will be able to create a 3-minute clothing commercial using adjectives to describe materials from a list given in class.

D

DEGREE

Describe the minimum criteria for acceptable student performanceHow often? How well?Define expectations regarding accuracy, quality and speed.

Using authentic websites

Food delicacies

Source 1 Source 2 Source 3

Goal: Students will discuss weird food experiences and describe a weird food from another country using a 3-5 minute voice thread presentation.1. Students talk briefly about their favorite food. Teacher asks students what the weirdest food they have tried is and which the weirdest food in Colombia is.2. Students go over article on web page. They discuss what the weirdest kind of food is and select one to find out more about it.3. Students would triangulate information in three different sources and learn some more about their choice, then record themselves (3-5 minutes) talking about the food they chose.
