TRANSCRIPT
This term is now coming to a close and I am sure that you are all looking forward to taking a deep
breath and spending time with family and friends.
Next term commences on Tuesday 14th July. School council have approved a pupil free day on
Monday 13th July, where teachers and education support staff will be learning about planning for
effective mathematics lessons and building our knowledge of the learning progressions of the big
concepts in mathematics. This will assist teachers to differentiate their teaching for individual student
learning needs. We are excited to have Leonie Anstey leading us in this learning .
Our school yard does have a lot going on at the moment in terms of construction and improvement.
Our Art room is nearly finished being fully refurbished inside and out, the front “Gumnut” village will
be completed soon with retaining walls and bench seating installed and planting of trees and shrubs.
This work is being undertaken by our maintenance person, Les Blacker. Les undertakes our
maintenance two days a week.
Our strong partnership with Kurnai
College has continued this term. We have
been pleased to have several VCAL students and their teachers, Brett
Gay and Chris Milne (one of our school councillors too) supervise and
teach the students to concrete a foundation for our new outdoor
chess area and to build a bench seat which will also house our large
chess pieces. This hands on learning is a great program at Kurnai,
which that many of our past students have taken up when they have
attended Kurnai College. We are the big winners, having our school
yard improved without labour costs and materials subsided heavily by
Kurnai College. We thank them very much for the hours they put in
each Wednesday for us. A big shout out to Simon Rogalsky (one of
our fabulous parents) who assisted them with the laying of the
concrete slab this week.
Thank you to all of the parents who have taken the time to complete our school survey on your
experiences with remote learning. We really value your feedback and rest assured we will certainly
use the feedback to continue to improve at the local school level. The survey is still open until Friday
26th June. If you would still like to and you haven’t had a chance yet, the survey link and details are in
COMPASS news feed.
On a larger scale, the Department of Education is also interested seeking your feedback to
understand what lessons were learned during remote and flexible learning, and the challenges or
opportunities to consider for strengthening the future of school education in Victoria. This
complements an independent analysis being undertaken across the government, independent and
Catholic school sectors, and a Summit to be held during July with students, school leaders and peak
associations. The Department of Education invites interested parents to share their thoughts using

Enjoy the term break,
Tamina

TERM 3 COMMENCES
It is with mixed
emotions that I
congratulate Ally
McGrath and
announce that she
has been successful in
gaining a long term
contract at
Yarragon Primary
School in a 3 /4 class,
commencing Term 3
2020.
I am pleased that
Ally has been able to
secure employment
beyond 2020, which
we were unable to
guarantee at this
stage.
I know that it was
not Ally's preference
to leave half way
through a school
year but this was too
good an
opportunity for her
to pass up.
I congratulate Ally
on her success.

MATH NEWS Over the last couple of weeks, the 1/2’s have
been learning different methods to help count efficiently and accurately. They have been
exploring using bundling and tally marks, and representing this data in a graph format.
The learners were using addition strategies to create a city together, and created bundles to help make towers
that were easy to count. They then used the towers from their city to graph the
different coloured apartment blocks and determined which apartment colour
was the most popular. The 1/2’s are very proud of their city creation but were
even more excited to destroy it afterwards using subtraction!
Reminders
FIRST AID- Any families that took their child/rens medication home or medication that needs to be replaced, please make sure this is handed into the office on the first day of term.
SPARE CLOTHES- Could all parents please send all children with a change of clothes to assist us with ‘wet weather’ changes. Also a good idea to send them in gumboots on non PE days.
If your child comes home in a change of clothes, it would be appreciated if the clothes borrowed could be washed and returned asap. If any families have clothes that no longer fit, we would gratefully accept any donations.

Child Safe
5 things to look for in an app
If you’re a parent or carer with young kids who are just starting their own online journey, the idea of online safety can seem daunting at first. Especially when you consider the sheer number of apps, games and platforms that are out there.
Is it safe? Is my child old enough? Who can contact my child? These are all common questions parents may have, and rightly so. The good news is there are some simple steps you can take to help make your child’s online experience safer.
1. Do some research If your child mentions a new app, go online and check it out — read reviews from users or other parents. Encourage your child to do this with you and explain that just because someone recommends an app, doesn’t mean you should just start using it. Research can also help you uncover app functions or uses that are inappropriate for your child. For example, you might find discussions about poor behaviour of users or warnings about possible malware found in an app. Alternatively, you might find some tips and tricks for how to use it in a fun and safe way.
Age rating and requirements Apps generally come with a suggested age rating as well as a minimum age for users which you can find in their terms of use. These age recommendations, along with your own assessment of your child’s level of maturity and judgement, should be considered when determining if an app is suitable for your child. Our eSafety Guide can also help — learn about the latest games, apps and social media including minimum age, how to protect information and report inappropriate content.
2. Privacy Review the information the app requests when a person first signs up. This will help you understand what kind of information is being collected and if you’re comfortable with that. Check if the app provides privacy protections for its users. Can you restrict who sees their profile? Who can find them in a search? And what information can people see about them? Make sure these privacy settings can be adjusted so their account is as secure as possible.
3. Permissions and settings Before installing an app, you should also consider what permissions an app requests. Does the app really need access to your microphone and video camera to perform its functions? Depending on the permissions requested, you may be giving away more information than necessary. You should also look to see what the default settings are and if you need to change them. It may save you from a nasty surprise - for example, if you discover your child’s location is being broadcast to all users by default.
4. Most importantly, when looking into an app, does it appear to take user safety seriously? Can you report things in the app? If so, is the reporting process easy and clear? Are the reporting options limited or can you report a wide range of safety concerns? Can you report things as they happen? We know, there are a lot of questions to consider but it’s important to be vigilant especially with apps or games that allow users to interact with others via message, voice or video.
When it comes to online safety, eSafety is here to help support parents and carers and ensure that together, we keep children safer online.
